A Coach’s Life

$9.99

A Coach’s Life is the story of one of the greatest high school coaches in the history of Iowa-an extraordinary man who unflinchingly lived according to the principles he taught, even when it meant losing a game or a championship-or the job he loved. Dan Kellams, a former Hipple athlete, offers an admiring, yet tough-minded glimpse into the life of Les Hipple-a coach who imposed stern discipline on hundreds of boys and, in the process, transformed them into champions. Kellams focuses closely on chronicling the coach’s years at Marion High School in Iowa, where he led his Indians to championships in football, basketball, track, and cross-country, giving the town its most glorious years in sports and many young men the unforgettable life lessons they would later pass on to others around the world. A Coach’s Life is a meticulously researched autobiography that shares many poignant anecdotes about small-town America during the 1940s and 1950s when a superb athlete died on the verge of greatness, a school controversy turned brother against brother, and a changing society trapped a great coach in the vise of his own principles.

A Whole New Ball Game: An Interpretation of American Sports

A Whole New Ball Game: An Interpretation of American Sports

$26.95

Sports in America, particularly big-time collegiate and professional sports, have never been more popular. Modern sports events bring us breathtaking demonstrations of grace and power and provide the focal point for the leisure time of hundreds of thousands of Americans. But the world of sports is also increasingly a scene of moral corruption and physical abuse. In A Whole New Ball Game, Allen Guttmann examines the American fascination with sport and what that fascination reveals about our culture.Like the transformation of American society in the twentieth century, the modernization of American sports has seemed inevitable and ubiquitous. As Guttmann shows, American sports reflect American culture: our sports are secular, bureaucratic, and specialized, and as part of our democratic society, they require at least in theory an equality among competitors. The rules of modern sports reflect their evolution from earlier, less differentiated games. To master the skills required by modern sports, athletes train scientifically, employing the most technologically advanced equipment. And, like almost every other aspect of our lives, sports are quantified: our athletes and the media are almost obsessed with records. In tracing the development of modern sports in America from the rituals of pre-Columbian cultures to the late-1980s in this book, Guttmann discusses the failure of colonial New England and the antebellum South to influence the evolution of sports. He shows how baseball, a sport that combines premodern and modern characteristics, performed important social functions, helping to Americanize generations of immigrants. Examining basketball as the archetypal modern sport, Guttmann discusses its invention in the YMCA and its vulnerablity to corruption by gamblers, and he provocatively reviews the transformation of informal chlidren’s play into adult-sponsored leagues. One chapter of this important study offers and engrossing account of the

Jefferson County can proudly claim a large number of firsts when it comes to African Americans in national history. The raid to free slaves that served as a catalyst for the Civil War was led by abolitionist John Brown in Harpers Ferry. The first man wounded in the rebellion was Heyward Shepherd, a free African American and a Jefferson County resident. Pres. Abraham Lincoln appointed Jefferson County native Martin Robison Delany as the first African American field officer of the Civil War. In 1906, the Niagara Movement, forerunner to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), held its first meeting on American soil on the Storer College campus. The first woman to become the coach of a men’s college basketball team was also an African American from Jefferson County. Additionally, the Colored Horse Show held in Charles Town was the first of its kind for African Americans.

Scott Brown’s greatest win did not occur on a cold January election night in 2010 when he came from behind to capture the U.S. Senate seat held by Ted Kennedy for nearly fifty years. It began when he survived a savage beating at the drunken hands of a stepfather when he was barely six years old while trying to protect his mother. In this gripping memoir of resilience and redemption, written with clear-eyed conviction and unflinching candor, Brown recalls his difficult childhood marked by innumerable hardships. He tells the story of how basketball showed him the way out of family chaos. Later, as a law student and member of the Massachusetts National Guard, he was picked as Cosmopolitan’s “America’s Sexiest Man” and vaulted into the glamorous world of New York modeling. But the man who was once ushered into the backrooms of Studio 54 returned to Massachusetts to raise a family, and soon found an unlikely path that would lead him to national political stardom. Poignant, heartfelt, humorous, and profound—including details from the unprecedented Senate race and victory that captured the country’s imagination—this is the story of one man’s dream and determination to fight for a better future.

Hunt (born April 15, 1946) is an American model, singer, novelist and actress. Hunt was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1946 and lived in North Philadelphia near 23rd and Columbia then in Germantown and Mount Airy for the first thirteen years of her life. Hunt still remembers Philadelphia with affection, particularly the “Philadelphia steak sandwiches and the bad boys on the basketball court”. Hunt’s mother Inez was her primary parent and worked as a librarian in a local library. Hunt’s father Blaire Theodore Hunt, Jr., was one of America’s first black psychiatrists but he did not live with Hunt and she found out when she was 15 years old that he had committed suicide three years previously. Hunt was brought up by her mother, her aunt and her grandmother, three strong, but very different women. Hunt describes her mother Ikey as “extremely intelligent and education-minded”, her Aunt Thelma as “extremely Catholic but very glamorous” and her grandmother Edna as an “extremely aggressive…ass-kicking” independent Southern woman. While Hunt was poor, she credits poverty with teaching her not to be materialistic. Hunt’s family put a great deal of emphasis on academic performance, and Hunt did very well in school. In 1960 her family moved to Oakland so that her brother and sister could attend Oakland High School and prepare to attend the University of California, Berkeley, which Hunt still regards as home. Hunt also went to Berkeley, in 1964, where she joined Jerry Rubin on protest marches against the Vietnam War. In her book Undefeated she recalled that during her time at Berkeley “were sitting in for the Free Speech Movement, smoking pot, experimenting with acid, lining up to take oriental philosophy courses, daring to cohabit, and… More:

American Hoops: U. S. Men’s Olympic Basketball from Berlin to Beijing

$30.18

Those who avidly followed the on-court acrobatics and off-court celebrity of the “Dream Team” in Barcelona in 1992 would hardly recognize what passed as Olympic basketball fifty-six years earlier, when the United States first played the game in the 1936 Olympics. In those early days of men’s Olympic basketball, many teams lacked basic skills, games were played in the pouring rain, only seven players could suit up, and the rules allowed only two substitutions and no time-outs. How this slow, low-scoring sport became the breakneck game that enraptures millions worldwide is the story of American Hoops. In this fascinating history of Olympic basketball on the world stage and behind the scenes, Carson Cunningham presents a kaleidoscopic picture of the evolution into the twenty-first century of one of America’s most popular sports. From clashes between celebrated egos and thrilling action on the court to the intense rivalries of the cold war and technological advances in everything from television to off-court sports equipment, American Hoops follows the fortunes of Olympic basketball in the United States and internationally as it developed and emerged as one of the most challenging and entertaining sports in the world.Cunningham traces how the modifications made by the International Olympic Committee and the International Basketball Federation have transformed the game of basketball over the years, from the Berlin to the Beijing Olympics. His book offers a remarkable view of the changing world through the prism of Olympic sport.

He was a Broadway star at age seventeen. His first job out of college was the 530-performance run of Lorraine Hansberry’s groundbreaking play A Raisin in the Sun, in which he appeared with Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, and Ossie Davis. Haunted by the death of her father and feeling disconnected from her life in New York, Joan throws herself into this strange new world, intent on getting a political education. In one embarrassing moment, she resorts to a shoving match with a Gore supporter in the streets of Brooklyn. Basketball Jones: America Above the Rim

Basketball Jones: America Above the Rim

$24

It began with Magic, Bird, and Dr. J. Then came Michael. The Dream Team. The WNBA. And, most recently, “Spree” Latrell Sprewell–American Dream or American Nightmare?–the embodiment of everything many believe is wrong–and others believe is exciting–about the game.Today, despite the NBA strike, despite home run derbies, despite football’s headlock on network television ratings, despite the much-heralded return of baseball, basketball has assumed a role in American culture and consciousness impossible to imagine 20 years ago, when arenas were empty and the NBA finals were broadcast via tape delay in the wee hours. So what happened? How did a “black sport,” plagued by drug scandal and decimated by white flight, come to achieve such prominence? What are the subtle and not-so-subtle racial codes that define how the game is played and perceived, and the reception of its high-profile stars? What does the shift in popularity from the predominantly white, working-class ethos of baseball to the black, urban ethos of basketball suggest about contemporary life in America? What linkages exist between basketball and hip-hop culture and how did these develop? How has the arrival of women on the scene changed the equation?Bringing together journalists, cultural critics, and academics, this wide-ranging anthology has something for everyone, from hard-core fan to casual observer.Contributors: Todd Boyd, Kenneth L. Shropshire, Gerald Early, James Peterson, Susan J. Rayl, Davis W. Houck, Mark Conrad, Charles J. Bones, Dean And Me

Bones, Dean And Me

$16.33

Bones, Dean and Me is the story of a boy who was recruited to play college basketball by Dean Smith of North Carolina and by Bones McKinney of Wake Forest during the formative years of Coach Smith and the concluding years of Coach McKinney. At the same time the athlete is pursued by the Morehead Scholarship Committee at UNC. He first accepts the Morehead scholarship and signs an Athletic Grant-In-Aid with Coach Smith only to “flee” to Wake Forest at the last minute because of a multitude of life’s challenges. In North Carolina his path was crossed by Billy Cunningham, Larry Brown and a host of Tarheel greats. He transferred to Wake Forest and played with Brian Piccalo and for Wake Forest during the 1965, 1966 and 1967 seasons. The question is posed within, “why would any sensible young man eschew Coach Smith and the Morehead Scholarship (one of the nation’s elite awards) and an opportunity to play in the Final Four in favor of playing with Wake Forest?” The second half of the book involves stories along “tobacco road” playing Division I basketball not only in the ACC but also at Ohio State, Purdue, Cincinnati and at many venues such as the Palestra, Cameron Indoor and St. John arena. It is believed that this is a story never told; i.e. the story of an atypical recruit at a time in America just before integration and just as big time college basketball became “big time”.

Excerpt: John Young Brown, Jr. (born December 28, 1933) is a politician, entrepreneur, and businessman from the U.S. state of Kentucky. He served as the 59th governor of Kentucky from 1979 to 1983, although he may be best-known for building Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) into a multi-million dollar restaurant chain. Currently single, he has been married three times, the second time to former Miss America Phyllis George. Among his children are news anchor Pamela Ashley Brown and former Kentucky Secretary of State John Y. Brown, III. The son of a U.S. congressman, Brown’s talent for business became evident in college, where he made a substantial amount of money selling Encyclopedia Britannica sets. After briefly practicing law with his father, he purchased Kentucky Fried Chicken from founder Harland Sanders in 1964. Brown turned the company into a world-wide success, and sold his interest in the company for a huge profit in 1971. He then invested in several other restaurant ventures, but none matched the success of KFC. During the 1970s, he also owned, at various times, three professional basketball teams the American Basketball Association’s Kentucky Colonels, and the National Basketball Association’s Buffalo Braves and Boston Celtics. Despite showing little inclination toward politics, Brown surprised political observers by declaring his candidacy for governor in 1979. A strong media campaign funded by his personal fortune allowed him to win the Democratic primary and go on to defeat former Republican governor Louie B. Nunn in the general election. Brown delivered on his campaign promise to run the state government like a business, which enabled him to guide the state through difficult economic times without raising taxes. Because he o… More:

Chuck Taylor, All Star: The True Story of the Man behind the Most Famous Athletic Shoe in History

His is the name on the label of the legendary Converse All-Star basketball shoe. Though the shoe has been worn by hundreds of millions, few, if any, know a thing about the man behind the name. Some even believe that there is no such person, that he is a marketer’s fabrication like Betty Crocker. But “Chuck Taylor” was more than a rubber-soled, double-wall canvas-body shoe with a circular ankle patch, with a bright blue star in the middle and a signature across it. He may not have been a Michael Jordan, but Chuck Taylor did earn the right to be the face behind the most popular shoe in basketball. For this first-ever biography, Abraham Aamidor went on a three-year quest to learn the true story of Chuck Taylor. The search took him across the country, tracking down leads, and separating truth from legend—discovering that the truth, warts and all, was much more interesting than the myth. He found Chuck involved with “industrial league” basketball in the 1920s, working as a wartime coach with the Army Air Force, and organizing clinic after clinic. He was a true “ambassador of basketball” in Europe and South America as well as all over the United States. And he was, to be sure, a consummate marketing genius. He was elected to the Sporting Goods Hall of Fame before his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. This biography makes it clear that he belongs in both.

But to this day, if I play in a game with kids eight years old and under, I’m a tremendously effective shot blocker.”—Woody Allen “A basketball game is a two-hour version of life, and that’s the beauty of it. You have a start, you have a middle, you have a finish. The nice part is that you don’t have to go eighty years.”—Donald Trump”I always say that the most dangerous play in basketball is the open white man. It’s because there is nothing more surefire… . A white guy open behind the arc is frightening.” —Chris RockThe interviews also offer compelling insight not only into what makes basketball transcendent, but these luminaries view the world of basketball how their own particular expertise and learn from it.

Crofton, Maryland (Images of America Series)

$21.99

Established in 1964 as a planned community, Crofton’s almost 2,000 acres have been colonized and cultivated since the mid-17th century. Its roots can be traced to America’s first planned community–Williamsburg, Virginia. Williamsburg’s elegance and charm inspired developer W. Hamilton Crawford’s idyllic design for Crofton: a grand boulevard, curving residential streets, arching trees, a country club, and easy access to nearby Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. This collection of photographs from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century reflects the life and times of the maturing village of Crofton. Fields of tobacco and corn, towering woodlands, cherry tree saplings along Crofton Parkway, the dedication of Crofton Park, summer Little League camp–Images of America: Crofton is a compendium of dreams fulfilled. Independence Day parades; fairs; bicycle races; pumpkin-design competitions; softball, soccer, and basketball teams; and summer concerts on the Green are all here. While historians record the facts, artists and cameras capture the small moments as well as the grand events. Those moments, large and small, are what readers will find between these covers.

His personal pantheon might surprise you. The legends are here, of course. And they deserve to be. Consensus is that these are the greatest of the great. But some of his rankings may be unexpected. Kansas guard Mario Chalmers’ three-point shot to force overtime against Memphis in the 2008 national championship game. Ralph Sampson of Virginia vs. Patrick Ewing of Georgetown in a 1983 reprise of the great showdown between Lew Alcindor and Elvin Hayes in the ’60s. UCLA guard Tyus Edney’s length-of-the-floor dash to glory against Missouri in the 1995 tournament. Michael Jordan’s game winning shot against Georgetown in 1982 during his freshman year at North Carolina. Kentucky’s 31point comeback against LSU in 1994. Cinderella George Mason upsetting Connecticut to make the Final Four in 2006. Every basketball fan has his or her favorites: the perfect player, the magical moments. But only Dick Vitale will go on the record, ranking them 1 through 50, and he’ll do it as much as a fan as a commentator. This is from his heart, naming the top 50 players and moments in the wonderful world of college hoops. It’s awesome, baby.

I thought a story that showed how someone helped a great writer break through that barrier of isolation and re-enter the world would make a terrific story, especially if that person were a teenager who is also in some way gifted.'' I was born July 25, 1979, in Louisville, Kentucky. I was raised by my mother, who worked extremely hard to support me and my other siblings. When I was ten years old we moved to Millington, Tennessee, a town right outside of Memphis. After graduating from high school I attended Jackson State Community College on a basketball scholarship before transferring to Fisk University to further my education. Throughout my years I have always had a passion for poetry. I began writing at eight and ever since then I never put the pen down. I compare my style to hip hop, which is a form of poetry over a beat. I am a big fan and I love any form of expression, whether it’s writing, rapping, singing, or painting. I titled my works Ghetto Poetry because it’s from a perspective of a person who has lived on both sides of the fence. I can relate to the people who are still in the struggle and at the same time get the message to corporate America so that they can feel what’s going on. I get inspiration from all sorts of things, mainly friends and family, so I hope my works are an inspiration to others so that they may grow close to their loved ones.

With recollections from his former players, including those of the 1966 team, along with Haskins’s own Seven Principles for Success, Glory Road is the inspiring story of a living legend and one of the most respected coaches of all time. With a foreword by basketball legend Bobby Knight, and coinciding with the release of the film Glory Road, the story of Don Haskins and his championship team is sure to become a classic for sports fans and historians.

Until 1988, America’s basketball combine rolled over the world in the Summer Olympics. In the ten tournaments before the Seoul games in which the USA competed, they brought home the gold nine times, losing only a single time in a final, and that by a scant one point. But while our Olympians were stacking up trophies, the rest of the world was catching up. At the 2004 Athens Games, the so-called “Dream Team” was vanquished by Lithuania, Puerto Rico, and Spain. When Duke Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski received the call to coach the 2008 team, he knew that it was no ceremonial honor; he was being asked to motivate a multimillionaire crew of NBA superstars into a winning unit. This stirring firsthand book recounts that sometimes uphill battle and shares the lessons that Coach K and his high-flying players learned in the process.

It has been said, “There are two seasons in Indiana. They are basketball season and…gettin’ ready for basketball season.”Growing Up in Indiana: The Culture and Hoosier Hysteria Revisited, is about basketball in Indiana in the middle of the 20th century. It is a look back at what the culture was like at that time. The author writes about the trials and tribulations he encountered as a young boy trying to become an accomplished player at Marion (IN) High School. Marion has won seven state basketball championships. Only Muncie Central High School in Muncie, Indiana has won more with eight. Muncie Central helped inspire the movie Hoosiers when it lost to tiny Milan in the 1954 Indiana state final game. The author was a spectator at that fabled game.Growing Up in Indiana is a compelling, heartwarming story about a player trying to earn a college basketball scholarship. Readers will discover how developments in high school, college and professional basketball helped Indiana to become “the basketball state.”Discrimination against African-Americans was at its zenith in the volatile era in which the author was growing up Indiana. He presents a vivid description of the bigotry, hatred and prejudice that affected his family, friends, teammates and famous players. The book describes how Hoosier Hysteria evolved and also explains to those who did not witness it, the racial strife America endured in the 20th century.

Isn’t that enough? Not necessarily. With sharp insight, award-winning journalist Veronica Chambers explores the challenges and stereotypes she and other African American women continue to endure, and answers the question most often posed to her: What does success mean for black women?Twenty-first century black women draw their inspiration from a wide range of sources: Claire Huxtable to Audrey Hepburn, snowboarding to basketball, Gloria Steinem to bell hooks. They choose what they like. Yet they are misunderstood by mainstream America and lack an accurate portrayal in the media of their lives. Chapters: Indiana Big School Football Champions, Indiana High School Football Champions – Smaller Schools, Mr. Football Award. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Better known for its high school basketball, Indiana high school football has also been a staple of Hoosier weekends for more than 100 years. In 1930, more than 30,000 people jammed Notre Dame Stadium to watch Mishawaka beat undefeated South Bend Central, 6-0. At the time, it was the one of the largest crowds ever to witness a high school football game in America. Indiana High School football is still immensely popular, with tens of thousands now packing Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to watch five state championship games over two days in November. The following is a history of Indiana’s big school state football championship. Since the late 1800s, Indiana high school football teams had been playing each other, often playing fewer than five games per year and many times skipping entire seasons. Pre-1920 “games” often featured high school teams playing semi-pro club teams, college teams and even intramural scrimmages. Various teams made state championship claims, but most were unfounded until organized leagues and verified games became commonplace beginning with the 1920 season. By that year, as many as 26 high schools in Northern Indiana stretching from Fort Wayne to East Chicago were annually compiling standings and functioning as the states first organized football conference. These northern football teams frequently defeated powerhouse teams from other states and were rarely defeated by Indiana teams from outside the league. (From 1921-26, Gary Emerson never lost a game to an in-state team.) It was probably quite safe for the winner of this early super conference to claim the Mythical State Fo… More:

Chapters: Hoosier Hysteria, Indiana High School Athletic Association, 1954 Milan High School Basketball Team, Indiana Alley Cats, Indiana High School Boys Basketball Champions. Excerpt: The 1954 Milan High School Indians were the Indiana state high school basketball champions in 1954. With an enrollment of only 161, the Indians were the smallest school ever to win a single-class state basketball title in Indiana. The team and town are the inspiration for the 1986 film Hoosiers . The team finished their regular season 192 and sported a 282 overall record. Background Unlike most states, Indiana held a single-class tournament where all schools competed for the same championship in one of America’s largest and most popular high school tournaments until the controversial separation into enrollment classes in 1997. Indiana still possessed a large rural population well into the 1950s and rural school consolidation was still in its infancy. As a result, most Indiana high schools of the era had what today are considered extremely small enrollments. Many of these small schools had realistic expectations of advancing several rounds into the tournament in that era, but they would almost inevitably fall in the regionals to urban schools from places such as South Bend , Evansville , Gary , Terre Haute , Muncie , and Indianapolis .1954 Milan High School Basketball TeamCoach Marvin Wood was hired two years previously, at the age of 24, after a collegiate playing career at Butler University and a coaching stint in French Lick . His hiring was controversial, coming on the heels of Superintendent Willard Green’s firing of coach Snort Grinstead, who ordered new uniforms without authorization. Wood was in most ways diametrically opposite to Grinstead and ran the program in much the same way. He closed

Houston’s Sporting Life:1900-1950 (Images of America Series)

$8.62

Houston has been a sports-crazy town since its founding in 1836 when the biggest pastime was watching the horse races held south of what was then the capitol of Texas. By 1900, spectators and athletes alike enjoyed the team sports played at every school in the city and suburbs. Companies competed with one another in baseball, basketball, and track. Boxing gyms dotted the wards, and downtown boasted billiard halls, bowling alleys, and indoor shooting galleries. There was also hunting and fishing, auto racing, swimming, and hockey at the Polar Wave, a mid-century indoor ice rink. This book presents a history of how Houstonians competed, where their recreation took them, and how they enjoyed a potential 12 months of “outdoor” weather. The 20th century was a fun and vibrant time for both fans and participants in the sporting and outdoor life of Houston, and many of today’s fans of sports and local history look back on Houston’s sporting past with a sense of nostalgia.

Tom Wolfe, the master social novelist of our time, the spot-on chronicler of all things contemporary and cultural, presents a sensational new novel about life, love, and learning—or the lack of it—amid today’s American colleges. Our story unfolds at fictional Dupont University: those Olympian halls of scholarship housing the cream of America’s youth, the roseate Gothic spires and manicured lawns suffused with tradition . . . Or so it appears to beautiful, brilliant Charlotte Simmons, a sheltered freshman from North Carolina. But Charlotte soon learns, to her mounting dismay, that for the upper-crust coeds of Dupont, sex, cool, and kegs trump academic achievement every time.As Charlotte encounters the paragons of Dupont’s privileged elite—her roommate, Beverly, a Groton-educated Brahmin in lusty pursuit of lacrosse players; Jojo Johanssen, the only white starting player on Dupont’s godlike basketball team, whose position is threatened by a hotshot black freshman from the projects; the Young Turk of Saint Ray fraternity, Hoyt Thorpe, whose heady sense of entitlement and social domination is clinched by his accidental brawl with a bodyguard for the governor of California; and Adam Geller, one of the Millennial Mutants who run the university’s “independent” newspaper and who consider themselves the last bastion of intellectual endeavor on the sex-crazed, jock-obsessed campus—she is seduced by the heady glamour of acceptance, betraying both her values and upbringing before she grasps the power of being different—and the exotic allure of her own innocence. With his trademark satirical wit and famously sharp eye for telling detail, Wolfe draws on extensive observations at campuses across the country to immortalize the early-21st-century college-going experience.
