Basketball Cards Fleer
Twenty years ago Fleer decided to fill a void in basketball card collecting 1986 would be a year to re-establish it’s name for making NBA cards. This would be a good move considering Topps had ceased to create basketball cards after the 1981-82 season and their only competitor would be the Star company with their sparsely distributed bagged cards. Having some what of a monopoly in hand and the luck of a new NBA star in the horizon “Michael Jordan” to anchor this set fleer would create what would be considered its rookie year in basketball cards.
The set numbers from 1- 132 in common cards and 1- 11 in adhesive stickers with one checklist. Timing is everything and having a great rookie set and what would be considered as rookie cards for stars such as Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Chris Mullin, Clyde Drexler, Joe Dumars, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, Hakeem Olajawon, Isiah Thomas, Danny Ainge, Wayman Tisdale, Dominique Wilkins, and James Worthy would make this a set to be labeled the best in basketball of all time which could never be out classed somewhat like the Topps 1952 baseball set of cards.
But there are more than just rookies on the checklist, with cards of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Julius Erving and Magic Johnson also included. Add it all up and there’s something for just about every basketball fan, making it a hit with collectors to this day.
Finding single cards from this set is not that difficult on the internet or at large card shows, and graded versions of the top rookies often change hands for big money. Two things to look for when examining the condition of singles from this set are centering (the border should be evenly distributed on both sides of the card and chipping of the edges, a problem that plagues many sports card sets with colored borders.
The Fleer 1986-87 basketball set can’t be duplicated in popularity today there are too many card makers in today’s industry of basketball cards. Collecting a full set of common cards and stickers is a hobby of many basketball fans and an underground niche that can be fun for everyone and great gifts for any basketball enthusiast. 1986 Fleer Common Cards Info!
