Alamodome $53 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Alamodome is a domed 65,000 seat, multi-purpose facility that is primarily used as a football/basketball stadium and convention center in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The facility opened on May 15, 1993, at a cost of $186 million. The Spurs played basketball in the Alamodome for a decade, then became disenchanted with the facility and convinced Bexar County to construct them at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition Inc. a new arena now called the AT&T Center. |

Amiri and Odette: A Love Story $0.01 A boy searches for his newfound love among the city streets, to find that, unwarily, she’s been caught in the arms of an evil street lord who means her harm. It is only through perseverance and undying love that the girl is returned to the safety of her one true love. Lyrical text and stunning mixed media artwork make for a powerful recasting of the classic ballet Swan Lake. They danced like mist on waterAs light as summer breeze. He touched her waist; she kissed his cheek. Her eyes began to tease.Set among the asphalt of a housing project and the concrete of a basketball court, Walter Dean Myers’ compelling work is delivered with rhythms that twist, hover, pounce, and inspire. Accompanied by the collage-on-cinder-block paintings of Javaka Steptoe, this genre-breaking volume sets a new stage for a classic story. |

Between 1982 and 1991 the home court of the 36ers was Apollo Stadium. In 1992 the team moved to the Clipsal Powerhouse. Later it became known as the Distinctive Homes Dome in recognition of the sponsorship from Distinctive Homes. In 2009 The Dome was left without a naming rights sponsor, but after the court was named in honour of Brett Maher, the venue is now referred to as the “Brett Maher Court”. The Adelaide 36ers were previously sponsored by Pura milk and with the naming rights of Pura Milk 36ers. Before this they were the West End 36ers (as in West End Brewery). Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Old Oquirrh Bucket (named after the Oquirrh Mountains to the west of Salt Lake City) is the symbol of in-state basketball supremacy in Utah. Every year since 1974 the trophy has been awarded to the in-state college team (Utah State, Utah, Southern Utah, BYU, UVU, and Weber State) which has the best win-loss record against in-state competition. In 1974, a proposal was presented to create a trophy a symbol to be awarded annually to Utah’s best college basketball team. The concept was accepted and for the first two years the in-state title was awarded to the Aggies, although no actual trophy had been determined. In 1977, after Weber State won the title for the first time, an Ogden businessman located a pioneer bucket at a local auction, complete with a history of how it had been found. It has since become the traveling trophy emblematic of Utah college basketball supremacy. The plaque on the bucket includes a map with the names and locations of the 4 original schools (BYU, U of U, USU, and WSC). SUU and UVU did not field Division-I basketball programs at the time the trophy was created, but have since become NCAA Division-I programs. The plaque includes the caption “The Oquirrh Bucket Utah State Collegiate Champ Basketball”. Utah has won the bucket 14 times, followed by Utah State and BYU with 9 victories, and Weber State with 4. … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3007311 |

Not illustrated. Excerpt: Aurora Basket Jesi, also known for sponsorship reasons as Fileni Jesi is an Italian professional basketball team from the town of Jesi. In that far 1965, Gianni Rossetti (a RAI – National TV Network – journalist), Carlo Barchiesi (current president) and Primo Novelli (who used to be in charge of the junior teams) who set up Aurora Basket couldnt foresee such a successful future for their new born team. It was in those years that Springoil, the most important basketball team of the city at that time, was very close to move up to the A League (the highest division of Italian professional basketball), but it wound up due to economical problems. (This team was set up by Ottorino Apolloni and since he died, a pre-season game is held in his memory every year). Hence immediately there was the need to re-launch basketball in Jesi. The first step was taken by Roberto Vigo. Also Roberto Mancini, one of the most popular soccer players in Italy, used to play in the ground of his parish when he was a child. Roberto Vigo proposed to Gianni Rossetti to set up a basketball team inside the Aurora Group. This way Aurora Basket was officially set up by the managers Rossetti, Barchiesi and Novelli together with President Mario Gherardi. The first season 1965/1966 was in the first Regional division and the team moved up only three years later. The team experienced a slow growth in the first years, but then it started to grow gradually when other new managers and the first sponsors joined the team and when the junior teams were started. At the same time, the senior team became more and more successful and only after 10 years Aurora moved up to an important national division (called D division) in the 1973/74 season. Since then the team has alway… More: |

He was the main cog in the Maroon forward wall and seldom allowed substantial gains to be made through him. He generally mixed in every play, varied his charges and was always down the field under kicks. College Sports In Los Angeles, California $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The UCLAUSC rivalry is the college rivalry between two universities located in Los Angeles, California: the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Southern California. The athletic competition rivalry between the two schools is among the more notable in NCAA Division I sports because both schools are located within the same city. The campuses are only 12 miles apart. The sheer proximity of both alumni and students, and the likelihood of encountering each other and interacting on a daily basis make this one of the most intense college rivalries in the United States. USC is recognized as consistently having one of the top football programs in the nation, while UCLA is recognized as consistently having one of the top basketball programs in the nation. However, a somewhat rare confluence of events occurred in 1954, which began with USC in a Final Four appearance in the 1954 NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament and ended with UCLA winning their only NCAA Division I-A national football championship. UCLA and USC’s flags fly side by side at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Both schools also are successful in many “non-revenue” sports. Both have had success in track and field, water polo, tennis, and women’s basketball. Through April 2010, UCLA had won 105 NCAA team championships and 128 total national championships, which is more than any other college or university. The UCLA Women’s Water Polo team beat USC’s team 6-3 to win the 2008 Championship on May 11, followed by the Women’s Tennis the following week beating California 4-0 to win their first women’s tennis championship and the school’s 102nd NCAA title. However, UCLA was knocked out by USC Women of Troy in Women’s Golf on May 23, 2008. USC captured the 2008 NCAA … More: |

Andy Martin was educated at Corpus Christi High School in Cardiff. He was a proficient sportsman who excelled in basketball and track and field, and captained the school’s Rugby team (which also included future Newport RFC prop Dai Pattison and Telford Tigers’ ice hockey forward Joe Miller) to the final of the Welsh National Schools Competition in May 1996. However, it was in football that he came to prominence after he was selected for the Wales Under-19s that year, and was spotted by a scout from Crystal Palace, of whom he was an avid supporter in his school days. A year later, Martin began his career as a trainee at Crystal Palace, turning professional in the 1997 close season. He made his debut on 3 April 1999, playing in Palace’s 1-0 win away to Norwich City. He made two further appearances at the end of that season. He was a regular squad member the following season, although played only 18 times. He did however score two goals for Palace that season, the first coming on 26 December 1999 as Palace lost 2-1 away to Charlton Athletic and the second on 5 February 2000 as Palace lost 2-1 away to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Martin found himself out of favour in the 2000-01 season, playing just once for Palace, in a 0-0 draw at home to Tranmere Rovers in the League Cup when he came on as substitute for Fan Zhiyi with just four minutes of extra-time remaining. But the Waterman’s have a different idea – save the schools – save the children! Frank has quit the security and comfort of his position as an insurance salesman in order to direct a yet-to-be-established City Club community center near Dexter Blvd. on Detroit’s west side. Things heat up for the Waterman family as heroin use explodes in Detroit like an atomic bomb and the police seem to run amuck under a new tactical unit called STRESS. Meanwhile Mike, the eldest of the three Waterman children, and his St. Martin DePorres’ (newly merged) basketball team prepare to compete for the city title against neighborhood rival Central High School. Some of the elders in the neighborhood warn the children ‘Be careful where you step, it’s a mine-field out there’. But Frank tells his family and community to ‘Keep pushing… we can reach our higher goal, because Detroit’s got soul’.” |

Double Dunk $10.95 Earl “The Goat” Manigault had what it takes to become a superstar: incredible leaping ability, great timing, and unstoppable moves. He set a New York City junior high school record by scoring 52 points in one game. In high school and on the playgrounds of Harlem, he astonished opponents with his acrobatic shots, including the patented double dunk.Although seventy-two colleges offered him scholarships, lack of discipline and bad breaks sent Manigault stumbling into a world of heroin addiction and petty crimes for three years. He succumbed to the fast lane life that sapped the lives of so many of his friends in the 1960s.The Goat kicked the habit, however, and then returned to Harlem to start his own summer basketball league for black youth. This inspiring story of how one man rebuilt his life is told with vivid, no-holds-barred descriptions of the harshness, humor and love in today’s inner city. |

Down Home Missouri: When Girls Were Scary and Basketball Was King $7.25 When I was thirteen, we moved to Dalton, Missouri, a flyspeck on the road map, so my father could supervise the 960-acre farm he and his two partners had bought several years before. It was a return to his roots. Our new home in Dalton was infinitely more primitive than our South Side Chicago apartment and even more primitive than my aunt and uncle’s hill-country house on the other side of the county. It was a hotel, one that hadn’t entertained guests for decades. It was a nightmare the likes of which my father never had. Not only did the hotel lack an indoor toilet and potable water, it also had no bathing facility. In this warmly witty account, Joel Vance re-creates what it was like for a city kid to have his life changed almost entirely when he is transplanted from his Chicago birthplace to his father’s home country in rural Missouri—where basketball was the major social event and a night out might be a trip to the burger joint in town. While Vance writes about his relatives and their roots in Missouri and Wisconsin, his focus is on his growing-up years in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The anguish of adolescence is detailed, but lightened with Vance’s special skill for humor. Dating, French kissing, drinking, hog castration, and vocational agriculture are just a few of the experiences that Vance recalls. His comical encounters with the local citizenry, his social misadventures, and his fumbling exploits on the high school basketball and baseball teams are interwoven with reflections on weightier matters, such as the mismanagement of the Missouri River and its wetlands by the Corps of Engineers. He shares his emotions, his dreams, and the realities of his high school days, capturing the essence of the experiences of many who lived in the Midwest at midcentury.Although Vance’s writing is funny—sometimes laugh-out-loud funny—there are poignant moments, too, when the realities of life and death are immediate and personal. Excerpt: Leonard Kevin “Len” Bias (November 18, 1963 June 19, 1986) was a first team All-American college basketball player. He was selected by the Boston Celtics as the second overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft on June 17, but died two days later from cardiac arrhythmia induced by a cocaine overdose. He is considered by some sportswriters to be one of the greatest players not to play at the professional level. Bias was known to friends and family by his childhood nickname “Frosty”. He was given the nickname by his good friend and pastor Rev. Gregory Edmond because he was “tall and cool and quiet and unassuming”. From Landover, Maryland, Bias graduated from Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, and subsequently attended the University of Maryland where he became an All-American player. Wearing number 34, Bias impressed basketball fans with his amazing leaping ability, his physical stature and his ability to create plays and was considered one of the most dynamic players in the nation. By his senior year, scouts from the various National Basketball Association teams viewed Bias as the most complete forward in the Class of 1986. Bias was favorably compared by some to Michael Jordan, then in his second professional season with the Chicago Bulls. On June 17, Bias was selected by the defending NBA champion Celtics as the second overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft, which was held in New York City at Madison Square Garden. Arnold “Red” Auerbach, as Boston Celtic President and General Manager, dealt guard Gerald Henderson and cash to the Seattle Supersonics for the pick in April 1984. Bias and his family… More: |

Dynasty’s End: Bill Russell and the1968-69 World Champion Boston Celtics $5.95 The Boston Celtics of the Bill Russell era were one of the greatest dynasties in sports history. During the thirteen years that Hall of Fame center Russell dominated the court, the Celtics won eleven world championships, including an unprecedented eight straight between 1959 and 1966. In the 1968-69 season, the aging and injury-riddled team finished in fourth place during the regular season, and sportswriters predicted an early defeat in the playoffs. Against all odds, player-coach Russell and his squad rallied to beat the heavily-favored Philadelphia ’76ers and New York Knicks, and captured the championship crown in a dramatic upset of Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West and the Los Angeles Lakers in the closing seconds of the final game of the series. The following summer, Russell stunned the sports world by announcing his retirement, ending his and the Celtics’ celebrated reign. In this vivid and lively account, Thomas J. Whalen chronicles Russell’s memorable last season and the Celtics’ dazzling triumph. Set against the backdrop of the tumultuous 1960s and Boston’s own turbulent and bitter struggles with race, he tells the fascinating story of how an improbable championship team overcame poor health, indifferent fans, disruptive personnel changes, and internal morale problems. Whalen recounts how Russell transformed the game of basketball during his remarkable career and revisits the outspoken superstar’s conflicted relationship with Boston. He also tells why the Celtics, the first team to break several NBA color lines, failed to attract a loyal following among the city’s largely white sports fanatics and press corps. |

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: The Veltins-Arena is a football stadium in the German city of Gelsenkirchen. Originally named the Arena AufSchalke, it opened in 2001 as the new home ground for Bundesliga club Schalke 04. It hosted the 2004 UEFA Champions League final and 5 matches in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, including a quarter-final. It has a league capacity of 61,482 (standing and seated) and an international capacity of 53,951 (seated only). The naming rights to the stadium were sold on July 1, 2005 to the German brewery Veltins. Plans to construct a new stadium emerged in the late 1990s, as fans and managers sought to move out of the outdated Parkstadion, and create a thoroughly modern multifunctional arena. Following Schalke 04′s historic 1997 victory in the UEFA Cup, and the club’s upcoming 100th anniversary in 2004, the contract to construct a €186 million stadium was given in 1998 to the German construction firm HBM. The site chosen for Schalke 04′s new stadium is in the direct vicinity of the old Parkstadion, on an extensive piece of club owned property known as the “Berger Feld”. Unfortunately, two mine shafts of the “Consolidation” and “Hugo” coal-mines run directly beneath this field at a depth of 800 m. These shafts (in use until 2000) would have caused unwanted shifts and tensions that could have compromised the structural integrity of the stadium. To avoid this, the main axis was rotated from the classic North-South arrangement to a Northeast-Southwest alignment, making the arena parallel to the mines. The Veltins-Arena was created as a multi-functional arena of two tiers that completely surround the playing field. These allow for a league capacity of 61,524 |

Flying over 96th Street: Memoir of an East Harlem White Boy $19.95 Tommy Webber is nine years old when his father, a founding minister of the East Harlem Protestant Parish, moves the family of six from a spacious apartment in an ivy-covered Gothic-style seminary on New York City’s Upper West Side to a small one in a massive public- housing project on East 102nd Street. But it isn’t the size of the apartment, the architecture of the building, or the unfamiliar streets that make the new surroundings feel so strange. While Tommy’s old neighborhood was overwhelmingly middle class and white, El Barrio is poor and predominantly black and Puerto Rican. In Washington Houses, a complex of over 1,500 apartments, the Webbers are now one of only a small handful of white familes. Set during the late 1950s and early 1960s, Flying over 96th Street: Memoir of an East Harlem White Boy is the story of one boy’s struggle with race, poverty, and identity in a city — and a country — grappling with the same issues. Tommy’s classmates at the exclusive Collegiate School for Boys, which he attends on scholarship, dare not venture above the city’s Mason-Dixon Line of 96th Street into the unknown territory of muggers, gangs, and junkies. Tommy, however, slowly makes new friends on the local basketball courts and at church, and discovers a different East Harlem, one where an exuberant human spirit hides within the oppressive projects and drab tenements, fighting to break through the cracked sidewalks. Webber interweaves the nation’s growing Civil Rights movement — from watching on television the forced integration of Little Rock’s Central High School to participating in the famous 1963 March on Washington — with the subtler, more immediate changes he observes in the lives of his friends and neighbors. In simple yet compelling prose, lit by the candor and innocence of childhood, Webber brings to life his East Harlem: children playing under gushing fire hydrants; the piraguas man and his pushcart of |

Giants among Men: How Robustelli, Huff, Gifford, and the Giants Made New York a Football Town and Changed the NFL $14.99 From the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, when basketball’s Boston Celtics were piecing together a run for the ages, when Montreal’s Canadiens were in the midst of notching a record-setting five straight Stanley Cups, and when the New York Yankees were the once-and-future kings of the diamond, one team boosted the NFL to national prominence as none other: the New York Giants. In Giants Among Men, Jack Cavanaugh, the acclaimed author of Tunney, transports us to the NFL’s golden age to introduce the close-knit and diverse group that won the heart of a city, helped spread the gospel of pro football across the nation, and recast the NFL as a media colossus. Central to Cavanaugh’s narrative, and emblematic of the Giants’ bond with their followers, was a hard-nosed future Hall of Fame defensive end named Andy Robustelli. A World War II combat vet, a graduate of Arnold College, undersized and nearing age thirty, Robustelli nevertheless anchored a Giants defensive unit so ferocious that they were the first team to inspire crowds to chant “Dee-fense!” But Robustelli and the Giants were a hit on the gridiron, playing in six NFL Championship Games in eight seasons between 1956 and 1963, the most remarkable aspect of this team was perhaps its relationship to the fans. These Giants were largely composed of ordinary joes who were equally at ease hobnobbing with Gleason and Sinatra at Toots Shor’s as they were rubbing elbows with working-class rooters on the IRT en route to Sunday games in the Bronx–like many of their fans, nearly all Giants players worked second jobs off-season to make ends meet. But the Giants of this era didn’t merely affect the fans’ relationship to the game; they changed the game itself. The team launched the careers of future head-coaching geniuses Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi, as well as those of a galaxy of stars and future Hall-of-Famers including Frank Gifford, Sam Huff, |
