basketball coaching tips

One of the first things any youth basketball coach should learn is the vocabulary behind the game. Once the coach masters the following terms, he can better understand the game and pass the knowledge on to his players. Knowing the language will promote better communication, which will lead to more teamwork, a crucial element in basketball.

Helpful Terms in Youth Basketball

Coaches should learn the following words, keep them in mind during practice, and use them as much as possible:

* Balanced floor: an offensive formation with evenly-spaced players

* Basket cut: when the guard swiftly moves to the basket at an angle after passing the ball from the area extended from the foul line

* Close out: a defensive maneuver featuring a controlled slide or correct lateral footwork

* Deny: a defensive maneuver preventing an offensive player from receiving the ball

* Help: when one defensive player assists another defensive player in covering his opponent

* Jump switch: a move to stop the advance of the ball or force an offensive player to the baseline during a switch, or change in the players being guarded

* Overload: when the majority of players are occupying one side of the floor

* Smother: when the defense surrounds the ball

* Speed cut: a controlled break for the basket in an effort to outrun your opponent

* Square up to the basket: when a player receives a pass and turns to the basket in a basic working stance

* Strong side: the side of the floor where the basketball is currently in play

* Top of the circle: are of the floor above the three-point line

* Trailer: a rebounder or post man who follows behind the fast break

* Triple-threat position: an optimal position where an offensive player can shoot, pass and cut, or drive to the basket

* Weak side: the side of the floor where the ball is not currently in play

Key Terms Called by Players

These terms are used in play, usually by the players. When coaching youth basketball, coaches should encourage athletes to communicate frequently by using some of these terms.

* “Ball:” a call from a player to alert teammates of a loose ball that is available for possession

* “Iso:” a call to alert teammates of an uncovered offensive player

* “Pick:” a call from one defensive player to another signaling that he has been forced to stop defending his offensive opponent

* “See the ball:” a call to signal that players should reposition themselves to best see the ball

* “Switch:” an offensive call signaling that the defense has swapped their guarding positions.
