A Universe of Atoms, An Atom in the Universe $79.95 The essays in this book are based on researches the author has undertaken on a wide range of topics, some using equipment no more elaborate than what one can find in an ordinary kitchen, others making elegant use of sophisticated experimental apparatus. Presenting a personal odyssey in physics, Silverman investigates processes for which no visualizable mechanism can be given, or that seem to violate fundamental physical laws (but do not), or that appear to be well understood but turn out to be subtly devious. Written in an engagingly personal style, the essays will be of interest to students of physics and related disciplines as well as professional physicists. Though they deal with subtle concepts, the discussions use little mathematics, and anyone with a little college physics will be able to read the book with pleasure.Silverman’s researches deal with in quantum mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics, electromagnetism and optics, gravity, thermodynamics, and the physics of fluids, and these essays address .such questions as: How does one know that atomic electrons move? Would an “anti-atom” fall upward? How is it possible for randomly emitted particles to arrive at a detector preferentially in pairs? Can one influence electrons in London by not watching them in New York? Can a particle be influenced by a magnetic field through which it does not pass? A basketball is not changed by turning it once around its axis, but what about an electron? Can more light reflect from a surface than is incident upon it? “A Universe of Atoms” is the second edition of Silverman’s “And Yet It Moves”; each essay in the earlier collection has been revised and updated, and some new essays on the uncommon physics of common objects have been added. |

A Whole New Ball Game: An Interpretation of American Sports $26.95 Sports in America, particularly big-time collegiate and professional sports, have never been more popular. Modern sports events bring us breathtaking demonstrations of grace and power and provide the focal point for the leisure time of hundreds of thousands of Americans. But the world of sports is also increasingly a scene of moral corruption and physical abuse. In A Whole New Ball Game, Allen Guttmann examines the American fascination with sport and what that fascination reveals about our culture.Like the transformation of American society in the twentieth century, the modernization of American sports has seemed inevitable and ubiquitous. As Guttmann shows, American sports reflect American culture: our sports are secular, bureaucratic, and specialized, and as part of our democratic society, they require at least in theory an equality among competitors. The rules of modern sports reflect their evolution from earlier, less differentiated games. To master the skills required by modern sports, athletes train scientifically, employing the most technologically advanced equipment. And, like almost every other aspect of our lives, sports are quantified: our athletes and the media are almost obsessed with records. In tracing the development of modern sports in America from the rituals of pre-Columbian cultures to the late-1980s in this book, Guttmann discusses the failure of colonial New England and the antebellum South to influence the evolution of sports. He shows how baseball, a sport that combines premodern and modern characteristics, performed important social functions, helping to Americanize generations of immigrants. Examining basketball as the archetypal modern sport, Guttmann discusses its invention in the YMCA and its vulnerablity to corruption by gamblers, and he provocatively reviews the transformation of informal chlidren’s play into adult-sponsored leagues. One chapter of this important study offers and engrossing account of the |

American Hoops: U. S. Men’s Olympic Basketball from Berlin to Beijing $40 Those who avidly followed the on-court acrobatics and off-court celebrity of the “Dream Team” in Barcelona in 1992 would hardly recognize what passed as Olympic basketball fifty-six years earlier, when the United States first played the game in the 1936 Olympics. In those early days of men’s Olympic basketball, many teams lacked basic skills, games were played in the pouring rain, only seven players could suit up, and the rules allowed only two substitutions and no time-outs. How this slow, low-scoring sport became the breakneck game that enraptures millions worldwide is the story of American Hoops. In this fascinating history of Olympic basketball on the world stage and behind the scenes, Carson Cunningham presents a kaleidoscopic picture of the evolution into the twenty-first century of one of America’s most popular sports. From clashes between celebrated egos and thrilling action on the court to the intense rivalries of the cold war and technological advances in everything from television to off-court sports equipment, American Hoops follows the fortunes of Olympic basketball in the United States and internationally as it developed and emerged as one of the most challenging and entertaining sports in the world.Cunningham traces how the modifications made by the International Olympic Committee and the International Basketball Federation have transformed the game of basketball over the years, from the Berlin to the Beijing Olympics. His book offers a remarkable view of the changing world through the prism of Olympic sport. |

Basketball Equipment: Basketball, Shot Clock, Breakaway Rim, Basketball Sleeve, Backboard, Finger Sleeve $8.59 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: A basketball is an inflated ball used in the game of basketball. Basketballs typically range in size from very small promotional items possibly only a few inches in diameter to extra large balls nearly a foot in diameter used in training exercises to increase the skill of players. The standard size of a basketball in the NBA is 29.5 inches in circumference. Nearly all basketballs have an inflatable inner rubber bladder, generally wrapped in layers of fiber and then covered with a tacky surface made either from leather (traditional), rubber, or a synthetic composite. As in most inflatable balls, there is a small opening to allow the pressure to be increased or decreased. The surface of the ball is nearly always divided by “ribs” that are recessed below the surface of the ball in a variety of configurations and are generally a contrasting color. An orange surface with black ribs and a possible logo is the traditional color scheme of basketballs but they are sold in various colors. Balls are generally designated for indoor (generally made of leather or absorbent composites), or all-surface use (generally made of rubber or durable composites, also known as Indoor/Outdoor balls). Indoor balls tend to be considerably more expensive than all-surface balls due to cost of materials. In addition, brand new all-leather indoor balls must be “broken in” first to achieve optimal grip before use in competition. The abrasiveness of asphalt and the dirt and moisture present in an outdoor setting will usually ruin an indoor ball within a very short period of time, which is why an indoor/outdoor ball is recommended for recreational players. Aside from the court and the baskets, the basketball is the only piece of equipment necessary to play th… More: |

Basketball: Its Origin and Development $1.36 James Naismith was teaching physical education at the Young Men’s Christian Association Training College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and felt discouraged because calisthenics and gymnastics didn’t engage his students. What was needed was an indoor wintertime game that combined recreation and competition. One evening he worked out the fundamentals of a game that would quickly catch on. Two peach half-bushel baskets gave the name to the brand new sport in late 1891. Basketball: Its Origin and Development was written by the inventor himself, who was inspired purely by the joy of play. Naismith, born in northern Ontario in 1861, gave up the ministry to preach clean living through sport. He describes Duck on the Rock, a game from his Canadian childhood, the creative reasoning behind his basket game, the eventual refinement of rules and development of equipment, the spread of amateur and professional teams throughout the world, and the growth of women’s basketball (at first banned to male spectators because the players wore bloomers). Naismith lived long enough to see basketball included in the Olympics in 1936. Three years later he died, after nearly forty years as head of the physical education department at the University of Kansas. This book, originally published in 1941, carries a new introduction by William J. Baker, a professor of history at the University of Maine, Orono. He is the author of Jesse Owens: An American Life and Sports in the Western World. |

Dictionary of Sports and Games Terminology $45 The specialized jargon of some sports can be quite esoteric. Non-Americans, for example, are likely puzzled by baseball terms such as bunt, cut-off man, and safety squeeze, while the non-British may pause over cricket’s Chinaman, doosra, golden duck, off-break, popping crease, and yorker. This new dictionary gives the definitions of more than 8,000 terms used in sports and games from around the world, including mainstream sports like basketball and billiards alongside the more obscure netball and snooker. Entries cover sports equipment, strategies, venues, qualifying categories, awards, and administrative bodies, while a comprehensive system of cross-references offers assistance and clarification when needed. An appendix lists standard abbreviations of sports ruling bodies and administrative organizations. |

Earl the Pearl $9.92 Earl the Pearl is a book about baseball . . . and about believing in yourself. Earl, the baseball-loving snail, overcomes his slowness and, in his own unique style, shows the team his worth as a player. He teaches the lesson that if you really love something, and put your whole heart into it, you will succeed. We become heroes through hard work and believing that we can overcome any obstacle standing in our way. No matter who, or what kind of critter you are, if you truly love the game, you can be a winner!About the author:Dennis Santos was born on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, and raised in a small plantation town called Ahukini. Growing up on the island, Dennis and his friends spent much time creating their own recreation. They made their own sports equipment — surf boards, canoes, basketball hoops mounted on palm trees; for their favorite sport, baseball, they made bats from tree branches, gloves from paper bags. For baseballs they used golf balls that they found at a nearby golf course. Their stadium was the open beach where coconuts, half buried in the sand, served as bases, and a home run was a ball hit into the ocean. After his high school years, Dennis ventured to Santa Barbara, California where he was married and raised a family. He worked as a youth minister to junior high and high school students, and now is a regional consultant for youth ministry in the Santa Barbara region. His love for the sport of baseball has not dimmed, and he enjoys coaching children in Little League. He sees coaching as a teaching method to help kids build character and develop a real love for the game. He wrote “Earl the Pearl” to be used as motivational tool for hisplayers. |

More Fun and Games $18.27 Anthony Dowson is back with More Fun and Games. The book he coauthored in 2005, Fun and Games, was a big hit with teachers, coaches, and all activity leaders who work with kids. Dowson's new book continues the premise from the first book—that children's physical activity games need to be fun and creative as well as developmentally sound. But Dowson doesn't stop there. For each of the 100 new games this expert physical education teacher and coach offers, he adds a pop-out box that notes the skills and fitness components the game will help kids develop. More Fun and Games covers warm-up, cool-down, and multisport games, as well as games for the following sports: soccer, cricket, basketball, tennis, netball, rugby, volleyball, badminton, and hockey. Each game includes information on equipment required, rules, and coaching advice. The games are easy to set up, require minimal equipment, and come with suggestions for adapting the games to suit not only the size of your group but also the skill level. And you can easily find the right game for your group by using the game finder section. These entertaining games and activities maximize participation while developing key skills, such as decision making, teamwork, attacking, and defending. By developing the technical skills they need in order to succeed in sports, kids will also develop greater self-confidence and enjoy their sport participation all the more. The games are crafted to help the kids stay focused, remain active, and have fun. The result is that they develop not only their motor skills and sport-specific skills but also positive attitudes toward physical activity. They'll have loads of fun with these games and want to come back for more, and they'll be on their way to establishing lifelong physical activity habits through More Fun and Games. |
