Basketball Espn Poll

Villanova college basketball has been a force in the Big East Conference since joining the highly respected basketball grouping in 1980. Long before the modern era success in the Big East the school that was established in 1842 as a Roman Catholic affiliated learning institution first fielded a college basketball team roughly 80 years into its existence when their inaugural team took the court in 1920.
Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Villanova makes a tremendous impact on the college basketball scene relative to the size of its student body. As a private college with less than 10,000 students Villanova University is considered small relative to many big time college basketball programs around the country. In fact, with only about 6,000 undergraduate students the Villanova Wildcats have the unique distinction of playing their basketball games in two different arenas. Because the Villanova college basketball program is not able to draw from a larger student body fan base games of lesser importance that are expected to draw fewer supporters are played in the 6,500 seat on-campus arena known as the Pavilion while more high profile games against nationally renowned competitors are played in the much larger 21,600 seat Philadelphia sports complex known as the Wachovia center which is shared by the NBA and NHL teams in the city (76ers and Flyers).
During the 90 year existence of the Villanova college basketball program the school has experienced more than its fair share of success. Few other universities can boast the resume of success that the Villanova Wildcats can. Among the noteworthy accomplishments are:
o 29 NCAA Tournament appearances (8th most of all-time)
o 21 Individual player All-American seasons
o 17 NIT appearances (NIT champions in 1994)
o 10 Conference championships (regular season and tournament combined0
o 4 NCAA Tournament Final Four appearances
o 1 Member of the Basketball Hall of Fame (Paul Arizin)
o 1 NCAA Tournament national championship (1985)
To a large extent most of the success the Villanova college basketball program has experienced on the hardwood has come while playing in the highly competitive Big East Conference which contains numerous programs that are consistently in the national championship hunt. Among the most prominent basketball squads in the league are the University of Connecticut, Georgetown University, University of Louisville, and St. John’s just to name a few.
The Villanova college basketball program has consistently exceeded expectations. In fact, over the past 7 seasons the Villanova Wildcats have outperformed the preseason Big East coaches predictions for where they would finish, with the one notable exception being the 2005-2006 season in which the Wildcats were correctly predicted to win the conference. The University of Villanova faces a similar set of circumstances for 2009-2010 as they did in 2005-2006 as the roster was once again anointed as the preseason poll favorite by the well informed coaches that make up the 16 team Big East Conference.
