Blake Griffin: How He’s Captivated the Country

A redhead in the NBA. One is almost inclined to feel bad. (See: Brian Scalabrine) However, Blake Griffin attacks the rim with such ferocity and reckless abandon that he has become recognized as a bully on the court. His highlights are so jaw dropping that opposing arenas are left with two options in his wake: deafening silence or raucous praise.

Quite frankly, his athleticism combined with staggering size has produced results that may have very well never been seen before. Sure, Michael “His Airness” Jordan and David “Skywalker” Thompson may have had higher vertical leaps, but Blake Griffin is nearly as athletic and a full 6 inches taller than those guards, not to mention he is built like a freight train.

In college, he hit his head on the backboard. In the NBA, he narrowly avoided decapitating himself on the rim. For a man who recently underwent serious knee surgery that has ended many careers, he shows unbelievable explosiveness. Furthermore his recovery also adds to his allure: redemption. Big men like Greg Oden were dominant in college, drafted high (both were number 1s) and saw their careers hampered year after year due to consecutive season-ending injuries. Fans are thankful that we didn’t lose this talent. Blake is thankful. Youtube users are thankful.

Blake Griffin has perfectly capitalized on the super-athlete vacuum created in the wake of the Lebron South Beach fiasco. Overnight Lebron went from league darling to national villain of A-rod proportions. The Heat immediately became as hated as the Yankees. (It probably didn’t help that in the midst of an recession, mastermind Pat Riley bears a striking resemblance to Gordon Gekko…) Following the PR aftermath, who better to step into the spotlight than a young high-flyer on perhaps the least intimidating franchise in the league: the Los Angeles Clippers. A threat to no one, no out-of-state fan feels any animus towards the lowly Clippers.

Blake Griffin has become the most exciting player to watch in sports. To keep up with his highlights, check in with Blake the Bully. As long as he manages to stay healthy, there is no doubt that he has a very bright future in the NBA. Only time will tell whether or not he has the drive necessary to pull the Clippers out from the depths of the league.
