basketball numbers
why are jersey numbers in international basketball from 4 to 15?

what do 1, 2 and 3 signify? (is it the umpire’s indication of a one pointer, 2 pointer and three pointer?)

The referees only allow numbers 4 to 15 in international basketball because they wanted to easily identify hand signal when reading jersey numbers.

Basketball on Paper: Rules and Tools for Performance Analysis

Basketball on Paper: Rules and Tools for Performance Analysis

$18.95

Journey “inside the numbers” for an exceptional set of statistical tools and rules that can help explain the winning, or losing, ways of a basketball team. Basketball on Paper doesn’t diagram plays or explain how players get in shape, but instead demonstrates how to interpret player and team performance. Dean Oliver highlights general strategies for teams when they’re winning or losing and what aspects should be the focus in either situation. He describes and quantifies the jobs of team leaders and role players, then discusses the interactions between players and how to achieve the best fit. Oliver conceptualizes the meaning of teamwork and how to quantify the value of different types of players working together. He examines historically successful NBA teams and identifies what made them so successful: individual talent, a system of putting players together, or good coaching. Oliver then uses these statistical tools and case studies to evaluate the best players in history, such as Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, and Charles Barkley and how they contributed to their teams’ success. He does the same for some of the NBA’s “oddball” players-Manute Bol, Muggsy Bogues, and Dennis Rodman and for the WNBA’s top players.Basketball on Paper is unique in its incorporation of business and analytical concepts within the context of basketball to measure the value of players in a cooperative setting. Whether you’re looking for strategies or new ideas to throw out while watching the ballgame at a sports bar, Dean Oliver’sBasketball on Paper will give you amazing new insights into teamwork, coaching, and success.

Pistol: A Biography of Pete Maravich

Pistol: A Biography of Pete Maravich

$12.99

Pistol is more than the biography of a ballplayer. It’s the stuff of classic novels: the story of a boy transformed by his father’s dream — and the cost of that dream. Even as Pete Maravich became Pistol Pete — a basketball icon for baby boomers — all the Maraviches paid a price. Now acclaimed author Mark Kriegel has brilliantly captured the saga of an American family: its rise, its apparent ruin, and, finally, its redemption. Almost four decades have passed since Maravich entered the national consciousness as basketball’s boy wizard. No one had ever played the game like the kid with the floppy socks and shaggy hair. And all these years later, no one else ever has. The idea of Pistol Pete continues to resonate with young people today just as powerfully as it did with their fathers. In averaging 44.2 points a game at Louisiana State University, he established records that will never be broken. But even more enduring than the numbers was the sense of ecstasy and artistry with which he played. With the ball in his hands, Maravich had a singular power to inspire awe, inflict embarrassment, or even tell a joke. But he wasn’t merely a mesmerizing showman. He was basketball’s answer to Elvis, a white Southerner who sold Middle America on a black man’s game. Like Elvis, he paid a terrible price, becoming a prisoner of his own fame. Set largely in the South, Kriegel’s Pistol, a tale of obsession and basketball, fathers and sons, merges several archetypal characters. Maravich was a child prodigy, a prodigal son, his father’s ransom in a Faustian bargain, and a Great White Hope. But he was also a creature of contradictions: always the outsider but avirtuoso in a team sport, an exuberant showman who wouldn’t look you in the eye, a vegetarian boozer, an athlete who lived like a rock star, a suicidal genius saved by Jesus Christ.A renowned biographer — People magazine called him “a master” — Kriegel renders his subject

The Hockey Dad Chronicles: An Indentured Parent's Season on the Rink

The Hockey Dad Chronicles: An Indentured Parent’s Season on the Rink

$14.95

The sport of ice hockey is going through a transitional period, losing popularity in the United States even as it gains momentum in other countries. The Hockey Dad Chronicles is the touching and funny story of one season in the youth hockey career of Ed Wenck’s son, Oliver, when he played for the Indianapolis Junior Ice. Hockey parents spend an inordinate amount of time and money on their child’s sport of choice — considerably more than soccer, football, or basketball parents dish out. They get their children to the ice rink for 7 a.m. ice time, they travel with them to other states for games every other weekend — and if they’re anything like Ed Wenck, they spend a lot of time sitting in bleachers wondering at the absurdity of it all. As youth hockey grows ever more popular, increasing numbers of parents are seeing their lives taken over by their children’s hockey careers. The Hockey Dad Chronicles will be a familiar, amusing, and moving reminder to them — and to all parents who devote themselves to their children’s extracurricular activities, whether they’re sports, drama, or dance — of what it’s all about.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! “Your Time Has Come” is the second single by the American hard rock band Audioslave from their second album Out of Exile. It was released in 2005. The song was inspired by ’80s song “People Who Died,” by The Jim Carroll Band, an emotional salute to the casualties of New York drug culture written by poet and singer Jim Carroll, who also wrote the autobiographical The Basketball Diaries. As Chris Cornell explained: “It’s a bunch of references to people that I knew that … were younger than me who’ve been dead for years and years, up to a couple of years ago.”it is also about people who killed themselves before their time has come.” The lyrics also make a reference to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. (“…I’ve seen fifty-thousand names all engraved on a stone…”). As Cornell has put it: “And then just kind of that juxtaposition of, even though it seems a lot for one person, a young healthy person, to have lost all these friends through various means of stupidity and other things, then making reference to the Vietnam War Memorial and the sheer numbers of dead.
