He was a Broadway star at age seventeen. His first job out of college was the 530-performance run of Lorraine Hansberry’s groundbreaking play A Raisin in the Sun, in which he appeared with Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, and Ossie Davis. At age thirty-two, he became the first African American actor to play an authority figure in a major primetime network broadcast, which was also the first-ever made-for-TV movie, Companions in Nightmare. As impressive as these accomplishments are, they all occurred long before Louis Gossett Jr. won an Emmy Award and an Oscar and became one of the best-loved and most famous and respected actors in America. In this frank and revealing autobiography, Mr. Gossett looks back over his fifty-five-year career in theater, film, and television (with a little basketball, singing, and guitar playing on the side). He reminisces about a mostly happy childhood in Coney Island; tells wonderful stories about working and playing with the biggest names in show business; and reveals how, in spite of what might seem to many a charmed life, his road was often made rocky by the scourge of racism from without and personal demons within.Among the most treasured memories of his early Broadway days are the twice-weekly poker games with Poitier and Paul Newman, between shows on matinee days, and playing softball in the Broadway Show League, where he discovered very quickly that he wasn’t the only gifted athlete in show business. He tells the story of his brief but unforgettable romance with the highly talented but tragically short-lived actress Diana Sands, and he reveals how Shirley Booth kept him from being fired from the cast of a pre-Broadway touring show and got him invited to a lot of parties at the same time.Mr. Gossett’s bitterest memories include a day that still ranks among the worst in his life. She’s crushing on the most popular boy at school, who thinks she’s a joke. And if that isn’t pathetic enough, her Phys Ed teacher keeps pressuring her to try out for girls basketball. That’s the last thing she needs: to be a tall, geeky, bookworm, girl-jock. UGH!!So each night she talks to God about her problems. Then one morning, a strange object appears in her bedroom. That night, strange becomes frightening and more terrifying than imaginable. Bitty finds herself swept away by an unknown Being into a far off dimension. She lands in the middle of an ongoing battle between the Sesprians and the Krylox. Book of David

Book of David

$15.99

From award-winning comedian, director, writer, and producer David Steinberg comes the totally original, utterly blasphemous, and hysterically funny memoir of a young man who emerged from a traditional Jewish childhood to become an international star — all because, it seems, he kept God in stitches. David Steinberg was raised in Winnipeg, Canada, by parents who expected little from him. And no wonder. Instead of studying Talmud in order to become a rabbi, he chose to major in Martin and Lewis with a minor in basketball. As David imagines the story of his life (since his success otherwise makes no sense), God one day spotted him on the playground and decided that this young man with no ambition could go far with His help. Sure enough, God soon had David on network TV and Broadway, and selling out nightclubs across the country — as well as being pursued by hot starlets. The Book of David is David Steinberg’s hilarious trip down memory lane, assuming that the lane has a biblical address. This wild riff on the Old Testament is guaranteed laughter.

The 6’7″, 200-lb. (200 cm, 91 kg) Bowen played small forward and graduated from Edison High School and Cal State Fullerton. He went on to play for the NBA’s Miami Heat, the Boston Celtics, the Philadelphia 76ers, the San Antonio Spurs and the CBA’s Rockford Lightning, and also played abroad in France. Regarded as one of the best defenders in the NBA, Bowen was elected eight times to the NBA All-Defensive First and Second Teams, and was a member of the Spurs teams that won the NBA championships in 2003, 2005 and 2007. Off the court, Bowen became an informal ambassador for child obesity awareness. Bruce Bowen Jr. was born in Merced, California as son of Bruce Bowen Sr. and Dietra Campbell. Bowen had a problematic childhood growing up in Merced, because, he claims, his mother took drugs and even sold the family TV to feed her habit. Bruce Jr. spent his days playing basketball and eventually became a star in the local West Fresno Edison High School squad. After receiving a scholarship, Bowen played four seasons at Cal State Fullerton, appearing in 101 games, and averaged 11.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. After averaging 16.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 36.6 minutes in 27 games as a senior in 199293, he was named to the All-Big West Conference First Team. Bowen ranks 12th on the Titans’ all-time list in career points (1,155) and is seventh all-time in rebounds (559). Cinderella Ball: A Look Inside Small-College Basketball in West Virginia

Cinderella Ball: A Look Inside Small-College Basketball in West Virginia

$13.74

For most of the twentieth century, West Virginia was a college basketball hotbed. Its major programs were a success, but perhaps even more successful was the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, composed of fifteen schools that rarely earned headlines but set many records and became an identifiable part of small town culture and a source of state pride. This ethos exists today in small town Kentucky and Indiana but struggles to survive in West Virginia. Part of the reason is the state’s population decline since the 1950s. That, author Bob Kuska argues, along with the rise of cable and satellite TV and the major college basketball empire, stole the thunder—and the crowds—from these small town communities. And yet, these teams play on in obscurity and still find success. Against the backdrop of West Virginia’s great small college history, Kuska chronicles the day-to-day struggles and triumphs of one modern school, Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia. What happened to that team during a rags-to-riches yearlong stretch would’ve been remarkable at any level, let alone at a school with very low athletic department budgets and low visibility that makes recruiting talented players almost impossible. As he alternates between coaches and players, past and present, Kuska contrasts the fan enthusiasm of the conference’s early years with the apathy that plagues the teams of the twenty-first century. If sports fans can get past the media and the madness that has made college basketball increasingly similar to professional basketball in its self-indulgence and sensationalism, they are left with leagues like the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference—scrappy, intelligent, and spirited—and still finding ways to succeed and thrive.

The company was resurrected in 2000, before being acquired by eGames in 2005. Cinemaware Corp. (1985-1991) Founded in 1985 by Bob and Phyllis Jacob, Cinemaware’s first title was the popular Defender of the Crown , a swashbuckling adventure featuring graphics that were considered extraordinary for the era, and became the hallmark of Cinemaware’s games. Cinemaware went onto release a string of hits based on a classic category of movies. Their games generally debuted on the most graphically powerful home computer of the era, the Amiga , and then ported to others, such as the Apple IIGS , Atari ST , Commodore 64 , PC (running under DOS ) and the Nintendo Entertainment System . Defender of the Crown is the most ported Cinemaware game. Cinemaware eventually expanded to sports games, with its “TV Sports” line. The “TV Sports” line covered basketball and American Football . Some “TV Sports” titles were only released in Europe , such as TV Sports: Boxing and TV Sports: Baseball . Cinemaware went bankrupt in 1991. While porting S.D.I. to another system, one of the company’s owners demanded the programmers add more features, increasing the programming time and delaying the product’s release. Coupled with falling sales of their other titles in the midst of an economic downturn, the company suffered. The company also suffered from software

The series worked to a formula where the team travel somewhere and typically got involved in a local conflict that leads to one of the characters proposing a basketball game to settle the issue. To ensure the Globetrotters’ defeat, the villains rig the contest to ensure that their opponents lose. However before the second half of the contest, the team always finds a way to even the odds, become all but invincible, and win the game.

 The Book of David

The Book of David

$23
