A Whole New Ball Game: An Interpretation of American Sports

A Whole New Ball Game: An Interpretation of American Sports

$26.95

Sports in America, particularly big-time collegiate and professional sports, have never been more popular. Modern sports events bring us breathtaking demonstrations of grace and power and provide the focal point for the leisure time of hundreds of thousands of Americans. But the world of sports is also increasingly a scene of moral corruption and physical abuse. In A Whole New Ball Game, Allen Guttmann examines the American fascination with sport and what that fascination reveals about our culture.Like the transformation of American society in the twentieth century, the modernization of American sports has seemed inevitable and ubiquitous. As Guttmann shows, American sports reflect American culture: our sports are secular, bureaucratic, and specialized, and as part of our democratic society, they require at least in theory an equality among competitors. The rules of modern sports reflect their evolution from earlier, less differentiated games. To master the skills required by modern sports, athletes train scientifically, employing the most technologically advanced equipment. And, like almost every other aspect of our lives, sports are quantified: our athletes and the media are almost obsessed with records. In tracing the development of modern sports in America from the rituals of pre-Columbian cultures to the late-1980s in this book, Guttmann discusses the failure of colonial New England and the antebellum South to influence the evolution of sports. He shows how baseball, a sport that combines premodern and modern characteristics, performed important social functions, helping to Americanize generations of immigrants. Examining basketball as the archetypal modern sport, Guttmann discusses its invention in the YMCA and its vulnerablity to corruption by gamblers, and he provocatively reviews the transformation of informal chlidren’s play into adult-sponsored leagues. One chapter of this important study offers and engrossing account of the

Cinderella Ball: A Look Inside Small-College Basketball in West Virginia

Cinderella Ball: A Look Inside Small-College Basketball in West Virginia

$19.95

For most of the twentieth century, West Virginia was a college basketball hotbed. Its major programs were a success, but perhaps even more successful was the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, composed of fifteen schools that rarely earned headlines but set many records and became an identifiable part of small town culture and a source of state pride. This ethos exists today in small town Kentucky and Indiana but struggles to survive in West Virginia. Part of the reason is the state’s population decline since the 1950s. That, author Bob Kuska argues, along with the rise of cable and satellite TV and the major college basketball empire, stole the thunder—and the crowds—from these small town communities. And yet, these teams play on in obscurity and still find success. Against the backdrop of West Virginia’s great small college history, Kuska chronicles the day-to-day struggles and triumphs of one modern school, Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia. What happened to that team during a rags-to-riches yearlong stretch would’ve been remarkable at any level, let alone at a school with very low athletic department budgets and low visibility that makes recruiting talented players almost impossible. As he alternates between coaches and players, past and present, Kuska contrasts the fan enthusiasm of the conference’s early years with the apathy that plagues the teams of the twenty-first century. If sports fans can get past the media and the madness that has made college basketball increasingly similar to professional basketball in its self-indulgence and sensationalism, they are left with leagues like the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference—scrappy, intelligent, and spirited—and still finding ways to succeed and thrive.

The Los Angeles Lakers, 2010 NBA Champions and one of the most storied and illustrious franchises in the National Basketball Association, celebrate 50 years in Los Angeles in 2010. Since moving from Minneapolis in 1960, pioneering the NBA s expansion to the West Coast, The Lakers have won 11 NBA Championships, 25 Western Conference/Division titles, and 21 Pacific Division titles, and finished in the playoffs all but four seasons in the last half century. Some of the greatest players in NBA history have worn the Lakers jersey including Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Gail Goodrich, James Worthy and four of the NBA s Most Valuable Players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O Neal and Kobe Bryant. Several LA Lakers were inducted into the Hall of Fame, as were head coaches Bill Sharman, Pat Riley and Phil Jackson. The team holds the record for the longest consecutive win streak in professional sports (33) and several NBA records including the most regular season wins and highest winning percentage over the past three decades. The Los Angeles Lakers: 50 Amazing Years in the City of Angels takes a look back at the heartbreaking rivalry with the Boston Celtics in the 60s, fast-break Showtime basketball of 80s, and dominance as five-time NBA champions since 2000. The story is told in more than 300 archival photos from Getty Images and text from the Los Angeles Times sports staff, including columns from the late Pulitzer Prize winner Jim Murray, with a foreword by Phil Jackson.

As the popularity of women’s basketball burgeons, Karra Porter reminds us in Mad Seasons that today’s Women’s National Basketball Association, or WNBA had its origins in a ragtag league twenty years earlier. Porter tells the story of the Women’s Professional Basketball League WBL, which pioneered a new era of women’s sports. Formed in 1978, the league included the not-so-storied Dallas Diamonds, Chicago Hustle, and Minnesota Fillies. Porter’s book takes us into the heart of the WBL as teams struggled with nervous sponsors, an uncertain fan base, and indifferent sportswriters. Despite bouncing paychecks, having to sleep on floors, and being stranded on road games, the players endured and thrived. Karra Porter brings to life the pioneers of the WBL: “Machine Gun” Molly Bolin, who set lasting scoring records—then faced an historic custody battle because of her basketball career; Connie Kunzmann, a popular player whose murder rocked the league; Liz Silcott, whose remarkable talents masked deeper problems off the court; Ann Meyers, who went from an NBA tryout to the league she had rebuffed; Nancy Lieberman, whose flashy play and marketing savvy were unlike anything the women’s game had ever seen. A story of hardship and sacrifice, but also of dedication and love for the game, Mad Seasons brings the WBL back to life and shows in colorful detail how this short-lived but pioneering league ignited the imagination of a new generation of female athletes and fans.

Growing up in Bolton, Ronnie Irani was good at all sports – football, tennis, basketball and even kick-boxing. But he excelled at cricket and after several schoolboy records, was snapped up as a professional by Lancashire aged just 16. Frustrated at constantly playing in the “stiffs,” Ronnie took his courage in both hands and moved to Essex—even though he was only vaguely aware it was somewhere near the Dartford Tunnel. Under the guidance of Keith Fletcher and Graham Gooch, he became one of the country’s all-time great players, went on to captain them to three trophies and became a legend with the fans. Despite being picked out as international quality by the likes of Geoffrey Boycott, Richie Benaud, and Ian Botham, Ronnie was often overlooked by England, but each time he battled back and earned a recall, including winning a place in the 2003 World Cup squad. Ronnie is typically honest about his relationships in the game, both good and bad; he relates how he used unconventional medical advice to overcome career-threatening injuries; he takes you out to the crease and back in the dressing room and he gives you vivid insights into the humor and the heartache, the trials and the triumphs of being a top sports star. And time and time again he shows why he became a favorite with cricket supporters around the world and why Frank Dick also said: “Telling Ronnie Irani that what he wants to achieve can’t be done is like lighting a fuse.”

An American in Finland, a Finnish contemporary jazz band and corporate sabotage all combine to make “No Feta Cheese”, a unique journey through a land of endless lakes, forests and quiet people. Karl Hafstad, a Norwegian-American, left his quiet life in Boise, Idaho, for a job in the Scandinavian music business. Peter Bengstromm was a boss unlike any he had ever had. Although he appeared to be a playboy and a sports addict, he was actually implementing a secret plan that could devastate musicians and record stores throughout Europe and Scandinavia. Skiing, tennis and meeting beautiful women all seemed to be higher priorities for Peter, than his career in music marketing, for Polydonn Records. Karl could tell something was going on behind the scenes, that just didn’t make sense. Mina Tervonen had a voice like no one else and wanted to make a name for her band, along with Pekka, Teemu and Hannu, beyond their small town in central Finland. Karl shared the challenging and difficult journey of adapting to Scandinavian life with two American friends. Karen Dosher was an old college friend and an investment consultant for an American venture capitol firm. Gerald Bingham was a professional basketball player in the European League, playing for a team in Warsaw. It would be his last shot to make a living from his athletic talent, before returning to a dreary life, back in Baltimore. They learned that their employers had quite a different sense of ethics and that working and living in Europe was dramatically different than being a tourist in Stockholm or Milan. While the band toured all over Europe, only Karl knew that the future of the band and an entire segment of the Scandinavian musicindustry could collapse in a matter of weeks. He was faced with one of the toughest decisions of his life, which could dramatically change his life in ways he could only imagine. Selling records and managing a jazz band, developed into something that was both exciting and eventually

Excerpt: Jaysuma Saidy Ndure (born 1 July 1984 in Bakau) is a Gambian-Norwegian sprinter. Having changed nationality from the Gambia to Norway in 2006, he holds both the Gambian and Norwegian records in both the 100 and 200 metres, and is the seventh and fourth fastest European of all times on the two distances. He has a bronze medal from the African Championships and several top-three placings in IAAF Golden League meets and the IAAF World Athletics Final. Saidy was born in Bakau, Western Gambia, and raised by his mother. His first experience in the sprint events came in high school in his hometown. He reportedly took up the 200 metres event in order to avoid beating his friend, who already had taken up the 100 metres event. In June 2001 Saidy entered the West African Championships in Lagos, and won the 200 metres in 21.27. The result was a new Gambian record time. However, setting a national record did not inspire him to commence serious training, as he still preferred to play basketball and volleyball for fun with his schoolmates. In 2002, Saidy moved to Oslo, capital city of the Northern European country Norway. A number of relatives already lived in the vicinity, most importantly Saidy’s father who had lived in Norway since the 1970s. Searching for a leisure activity, Saidy decided to take up athletics again and joined one of the athletics clubs in the Norwegian capital, IL i BUL, whose training sessions were held in the internationally known Bislett stadion. Here, his talent was soon discovered and Saidy was put in contact with coach Olav Magne Tveitå, who still coaches him. Saidy later established … More:

Pistol: A Biography of Pete Maravich

Pistol: A Biography of Pete Maravich

$12.99

Pistol is more than the biography of a ballplayer. It’s the stuff of classic novels: the story of a boy transformed by his father’s dream — and the cost of that dream. Even as Pete Maravich became Pistol Pete — a basketball icon for baby boomers — all the Maraviches paid a price. Now acclaimed author Mark Kriegel has brilliantly captured the saga of an American family: its rise, its apparent ruin, and, finally, its redemption. Almost four decades have passed since Maravich entered the national consciousness as basketball’s boy wizard. No one had ever played the game like the kid with the floppy socks and shaggy hair. And all these years later, no one else ever has. The idea of Pistol Pete continues to resonate with young people today just as powerfully as it did with their fathers. In averaging 44.2 points a game at Louisiana State University, he established records that will never be broken. But even more enduring than the numbers was the sense of ecstasy and artistry with which he played. With the ball in his hands, Maravich had a singular power to inspire awe, inflict embarrassment, or even tell a joke. But he wasn’t merely a mesmerizing showman. He was basketball’s answer to Elvis, a white Southerner who sold Middle America on a black man’s game. Like Elvis, he paid a terrible price, becoming a prisoner of his own fame. Set largely in the South, Kriegel’s Pistol, a tale of obsession and basketball, fathers and sons, merges several archetypal characters. Maravich was a child prodigy, a prodigal son, his father’s ransom in a Faustian bargain, and a Great White Hope. But he was also a creature of contradictions: always the outsider but avirtuoso in a team sport, an exuberant showman who wouldn’t look you in the eye, a vegetarian boozer, an athlete who lived like a rock star, a suicidal genius saved by Jesus Christ.A renowned biographer — People magazine called him “a master” — Kriegel renders his subject

Pistol: The Life of Pete Maravich

Pistol: The Life of Pete Maravich

$15

“Pistol” Pete Maravich (1947-88) sported floppy socks and a bushy head of hair, but on a basketball court he could defy the laws of physics. Even before he reached college, his feats were legend. Long before the 3-point rule, he scored 3,667 points in his three varsity years at Southeastern Louisiana College, setting one of many NCAA records that he still holds. “Pistol” wasn’t just a shooting phenom; his dribbling and passing skills were also unexcelled. In the NBA, he was a five-time All-Star, but his virtuosity grated against team-oriented systems. Off the court, Maravich was an eccentric, often reclusive outsider. After injury forced his retirement in 1980, he sank into alcoholism and depression. He had just settled peacefully into his conversion to evangelical Christianity when a heart attack struck him down while he was playing in a church pickup game. Mark Kriegel’s biography places Maravich’s bumpy journey and astonishing accomplishments in bold relief.

Something in the Air: American Passion and Defiance in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics

$10

Something in the Air is Richard Hoffer’s gripping sports narrative that tells the individual stories of the athletes who gathered in Mexico City in 1968, a year of dramatic upheaval around the world. Racial tensions were high on the U.S. Olympic team, where inflamed black athletes had to choose between demands for justice, on the one hand, and loyalty to country, on the other. Although basketball star Lew Alcindor (later to become the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) decided not to participate, heavyweight boxer George Foreman not only competed and won a gold medal but waved a miniature American flag at foreign judges. Sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos became as famous for their raised-fist gestures of protest as their speed on the track. No one was prepared for Bob Beamon’s long jump, which broke the world record by a staggering twenty-two inches. And then there was Dick Fosbury, the goofball high jumper whose backward, upside-down approach to the bar (the “Fosbury Flop”) baffled his coaches while breaking records. Filled with human drama, Something in the Air is a powerful, unforgettable tale that will resonate with sports fans and readers of social history alike.

The classic autobiography of UCLA basketball’s legendary coach”They Call Me Coach is grass-roots Americana, a story bigger than basketball. One of those rare sports books that is must reading for everyone.”—Chicago TribuneFor 27 years, John Wooden led the UCLA basketball team to unsurpassed victories and records. His dedication and inspiration made him America’s “winningest” coach. In this classic bestselling autobiography—updated with a new foreword by Hall-of-Famer Bill Walton—the college basketball legend reflects on his record-breaking career, his life behind the scenes, and how his top players went on to shape and change the NBA. From the everyday basics to important life lessons (“It’s not how tall you are, but how tall you play”), Wooden shares his worldly wisdom on and off the court to offer a personal history of an unforgettable time in college basketball, answering the most-asked questions about his life, his career, and the players who made his teams unbeatable.”What Knute Rockne was to football, Connie Mack to baseball, and Wilbur and Orville Wright to flying, John Wooden is to basketball. This book captures the full flavor of the man, the philosophies that work in life, and the philosophies that work on the court. I commend it to people who want to succeed at either—or both.”—Los Angeles TimesJohn Wooden (1910-2010), guided the UCLA Bruins to ten NCAA basketball championships over a 12-year period, including four perfect seasons and an 88-game winning streak. He was named ESPN’s “Greatest Coach of the 20th Century” and voted “#1 Coach of All Time” by The Sporting News. Sports Illustrated said it best when they said: “There’s never been a finer man in American sports than John Wooden, or a finer coach.” In 2003 John Wooden was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
