A Whole New Ball Game: An Interpretation of American Sports $26.95 Sports in America, particularly big-time collegiate and professional sports, have never been more popular. Modern sports events bring us breathtaking demonstrations of grace and power and provide the focal point for the leisure time of hundreds of thousands of Americans. But the world of sports is also increasingly a scene of moral corruption and physical abuse. In A Whole New Ball Game, Allen Guttmann examines the American fascination with sport and what that fascination reveals about our culture.Like the transformation of American society in the twentieth century, the modernization of American sports has seemed inevitable and ubiquitous. As Guttmann shows, American sports reflect American culture: our sports are secular, bureaucratic, and specialized, and as part of our democratic society, they require at least in theory an equality among competitors. The rules of modern sports reflect their evolution from earlier, less differentiated games. To master the skills required by modern sports, athletes train scientifically, employing the most technologically advanced equipment. And, like almost every other aspect of our lives, sports are quantified: our athletes and the media are almost obsessed with records. In tracing the development of modern sports in America from the rituals of pre-Columbian cultures to the late-1980s in this book, Guttmann discusses the failure of colonial New England and the antebellum South to influence the evolution of sports. He shows how baseball, a sport that combines premodern and modern characteristics, performed important social functions, helping to Americanize generations of immigrants. Examining basketball as the archetypal modern sport, Guttmann discusses its invention in the YMCA and its vulnerablity to corruption by gamblers, and he provocatively reviews the transformation of informal chlidren’s play into adult-sponsored leagues. One chapter of this important study offers and engrossing account of the |

American Documents: The Mayflower Compact $1.28 The eagerly-awaited final title in National Geographic’s popular American Documents series completes the broad sweep of the collection by casting all the way back to our country’s original document of record, the Mayflower Compact. The date is November 10, 1620. After 66 days at sea crammed into a space about the size of a basketball court, the Pilgrims—as the 101 surviving passengers of the Mayflower became known—arrived on America’s shores. They were an ocean away from their home country and hundreds of miles from where they were supposed to settle in the Virginia Colony. To survive in the wilderness of this strange, new land, they would need some rules for governing themselves and their community. The document they wrote is known as the Mayflower Compact. In fewer than 200 words, it laid the groundwork for democracy in America. The Mayflower Compact includes: an engaging, interactive, and age-appropriate text, vetted by experts 40 pages generously illustrated with period artwork and archival photographs biographies of key figures in the document’s history the entire text of the original document and a complete list of its signatories excerpt from Mourt’s Relation, written by Edward Winslow and William Bradford, two of the colony’s founding fathers the charter of the Colony of New Plymouth Web links to further information a detailed glossary and index The core curriculum topics of pre-colonial and colonial American history are viewed through the prism of this cornerstone document and students are made aware of its relevance to their 21st century lives. This book is essential for any school, public, or home library. The Mayflower Compact acts as a valuable reminder of the time when America was merely an ideal being shaped in the minds of our forefathers, eager to escape oppression and create a better world. |

American Hoops: U. S. Men’s Olympic Basketball from Berlin to Beijing $40 Those who avidly followed the on-court acrobatics and off-court celebrity of the “Dream Team” in Barcelona in 1992 would hardly recognize what passed as Olympic basketball fifty-six years earlier, when the United States first played the game in the 1936 Olympics. In those early days of men’s Olympic basketball, many teams lacked basic skills, games were played in the pouring rain, only seven players could suit up, and the rules allowed only two substitutions and no time-outs. How this slow, low-scoring sport became the breakneck game that enraptures millions worldwide is the story of American Hoops. In this fascinating history of Olympic basketball on the world stage and behind the scenes, Carson Cunningham presents a kaleidoscopic picture of the evolution into the twenty-first century of one of America’s most popular sports. From clashes between celebrated egos and thrilling action on the court to the intense rivalries of the cold war and technological advances in everything from television to off-court sports equipment, American Hoops follows the fortunes of Olympic basketball in the United States and internationally as it developed and emerged as one of the most challenging and entertaining sports in the world.Cunningham traces how the modifications made by the International Olympic Committee and the International Basketball Federation have transformed the game of basketball over the years, from the Berlin to the Beijing Olympics. His book offers a remarkable view of the changing world through the prism of Olympic sport. |

Andrew Bogut $65 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Andrew Michael Bogut is an Australian professional basketball player. He plays for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association. Bogut was selected first overall by the Bucks in the 2005 NBA Draft. The 7’0″, 260 lb forward/center was a star at the University of Utah for two years before declaring for the draft. Bogut is the first Australian as well as the first Utah player to be drafted number one overall. Bogut was born to Croatian immigrants Michael and Anne Susan Bogut in Endeavour Hills, Victoria, Australia. Bogut grew up playing Australian rules football and tennis in addition to basketball. In his childhood, he patterned his basketball game after Toni Kukoc. As a 15-year-old, he was cut from the Victoria junior state representative team. That experience apparently drove him to improve; he later went on to attend the Australian Institute of Sport, with whom he would tour the United States in 2001 and 2002. In his last season at AIS, he averaged 29 points, 14.5 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game while competing in the SEABL. |

Any Given Day $10.77 The object of this book,”Any Given Day” is to take the gamble out of sports gambling. The statistical probability system explained in this book is an objective system for both professional football and basketball. There is no guess work as the system is based on simple math and statistics. The system was developed in the early 1950′s while working with my father who taught physics and calculus in college. Coming together, a mining and civil engineer and a teacher, coach and athletic director, the system has been refined and brought up to date for todays sports.February 6, 1005 which was Super Bowl XXXIX the exact score was predicted by the system, New England 24 and Philadelphia 21. Because of this, I was called gifted in Las Vegas. There are many games listed in the book that pick the exact score. How about week 10 played November 10, 2002 between Atlanta and Pittsburg. The system picked the game to be a tie. I called the game at 24 Atlanta and 24 Pittsburg. That became the final score after overtime. No game had ended in a tie for many years, and until this year, 2008, there had been no other. This book is much more than just the winning football and basketball system as it covers sports gaming rules, sports talk, the type of wagers, and which to use and which to stay away from using. This is a real love novel because with one $10.00 two team parlay bet you will almost double the price you paid for this book. The chapter, Beyond Stupidity, is enlightening as it gives the reader an inside look at the coaching world. A mistake by a coach can cause a loss, Where as, a mistake by a player may not. You will see why coaches are finally being paid more money than in the early years of pro sports.Money Management is a very important chaper for any phase of life. Remember “Pigs get fat, and hogs get slaughtered”. Self-discipline, self-control and mental strength is a large part of money management. Here is where we will talk about a |

As the club was constantly in economical problems, having to battle for the people’s preference with basketball side Joventut Badalona, it nearly disappeared in the early 2000′s (as the side was on the verge of celebrating 100 years) but, after another merge, this time with Unió de l’Esport Badaloní, resurfaced and changed names to Club de Fútbol Badalona – with the latter preserving its history – eventually making its debut in the (new)third level in 2004. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: The Liga ACB, or Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (English: Basketball Clubs’ Association), often abbreviated to the ACB, is the pre-eminent men’s professional basketball league in Spain. It was founded in 1956 with the name of Liga Nacional. The league changed its name to the current one in 1983. The league is rated as one of the three “A” level European national domestic leagues in the ULEB League Rankings system. The ACB League is considered by many to be one of the best and most elite basketball leagues in Europe and even in the whole world. The ACB league, which is played under FIBA rules, currently consists of 18 teams, including Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Cajasol, Estudiantes, Joventut Badalona, Caja Laboral Baskonia, Valencia Basket and Unicaja Málaga. Each team has to play all the other teams in its division twice, one at home and one away. This means that in Liga ACB the regular league ends after all teams play 34 matches. Like many other leagues in continental Europe, the Liga ACB takes a winter break once each team has played half of its scheduled matches. One feature of the league that may be unusual to North American observers is that the two halves of the season are played in the same order-that is, the order of each team’s first-half fixtures is repeated in the second half of the season. This is normal in Spanish sports; it is also used by La Liga in association football. At the end of the league, the eight best teams start a play-off, playing the regular season champion with the 8th and so on. There are three rounds |

Basketball on Paper: Rules and Tools for Performance Analysis $18.95 Journey “inside the numbers” for an exceptional set of statistical tools and rules that can help explain the winning, or losing, ways of a basketball team. Basketball on Paper doesn’t diagram plays or explain how players get in shape, but instead demonstrates how to interpret player and team performance. Dean Oliver highlights general strategies for teams when they’re winning or losing and what aspects should be the focus in either situation. He describes and quantifies the jobs of team leaders and role players, then discusses the interactions between players and how to achieve the best fit. Oliver conceptualizes the meaning of teamwork and how to quantify the value of different types of players working together. He examines historically successful NBA teams and identifies what made them so successful: individual talent, a system of putting players together, or good coaching. Oliver then uses these statistical tools and case studies to evaluate the best players in history, such as Magic Johnson, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, and Charles Barkley and how they contributed to their teams’ success. He does the same for some of the NBA’s “oddball” players-Manute Bol, Muggsy Bogues, and Dennis Rodman and for the WNBA’s top players.Basketball on Paper is unique in its incorporation of business and analytical concepts within the context of basketball to measure the value of players in a cooperative setting. Whether you’re looking for strategies or new ideas to throw out while watching the ballgame at a sports bar, Dean Oliver’sBasketball on Paper will give you amazing new insights into teamwork, coaching, and success. |

Basketball: Its Origin and Development $15.95 James Naismith was teaching physical education at the Young Men’s Christian Association Training College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and felt discouraged because calisthenics and gymnastics didn’t engage his students. What was needed was an indoor wintertime game that combined recreation and competition. One evening he worked out the fundamentals of a game that would quickly catch on. Two peach half-bushel baskets gave the name to the brand new sport in late 1891. Basketball: Its Origin and Development was written by the inventor himself, who was inspired purely by the joy of play. Naismith, born in northern Ontario in 1861, gave up the ministry to preach clean living through sport. He describes Duck on the Rock, a game from his Canadian childhood, the creative reasoning behind his basket game, the eventual refinement of rules and development of equipment, the spread of amateur and professional teams throughout the world, and the growth of women’s basketball (at first banned to male spectators because the players wore bloomers). Naismith lived long enough to see basketball included in the Olympics in 1936. Three years later he died, after nearly forty years as head of the physical education department at the University of Kansas. This book, originally published in 1941, carries a new introduction by William J. Baker, a professor of history at the University of Maine, Orono. He is the author of Jesse Owens: An American Life and Sports in the Western World. |

The first forward pass was thrown by Roudebush a year earlier in 1912 to Dave Reese in a 3-3 tie against Wooster College and a 60-3 Denison victory over Otterbein College. Courtiers of the Marble Palace: The Rise and Influence of the Supreme Court Law Clerk $9.44 Since the hiring of the first Supreme Court law clerk by Associate Justice Horace Gray in the late 1880s, court observers and the general public have demonstrated a consistent fascination with law clerks and the influence—real or imagined—that they wield over judicial decisions. While initially each Supreme Court justice hired a single clerk, today’s justices can hire up to four new law school graduates. The justices have taken advantage of this resource, and in modern times law clerks have been given greater job duties and more responsibility. The increased use of law clerks has spawned a controversy about the role they play, and commentators have suggested that liberal or conservative clerks influence their justices’ decision making. The influence debate is but one piece of a more important and largely unexamined puzzle regarding the hiring and utilization of Supreme Court law clerks.Courtiers of the Marble Palace is the first systematic examination of the “clerkship institution”—the web of formal and informal norms and rules surrounding the hiring and utilization of law clerks by the individual justices on the United States Supreme Court. Todd Peppers provides an unprecedented view into the work lives of and day-to-day relationships between justices and their clerks; relationships that in some cases have extended to daily breakfasts, games of competitive basketball and tennis, and occasional holiday celebrations. Through personal interviews with fifty-three former clerks and correspondence with an additional ninety, as well as personal interviews with a number of non-clerks, including Justice Antonin Scalia, Peppers has amassed a body of information that reveals the true inner-workings of the clerkship institution. With a Foreword by Professor Robert M. O’Neil of the University of Virginia School of Law, former President of the University of Virginia and former law clerk for Justice William J. Brennan, Jr. |

Eleven Miles South of Half Moon Bay $3.99 Eleven Miles South of Half Moon Bay is a shout of joy and a howl of grief. It is a single golden instant and all eternity. It is a story mundane as boys playing marbles yet vast as life and death. It is the story of two free spirits: cousins for a mortal moment, brothers forever. One young man wore his nickname, “Wild Man,” proudly. But compared to his counterpart, he should have answered to “Mild Man.” One excelled in academics and athletics with little effort; the other struggled for mediocrity. One pretended to follow the rules; the other defied them. One became a college graduate, the other a high school dropout. One laughed when he failed his pre-draft physical; the other volunteered to serve in Vietnam. Eleven Miles South of Half Moon Bay is the story of young men coming of age in the 1960s. It is the story of swimming naked at the YMCA, youthful rebellion and indiscretion, and surviving in a neighborhood where fistfights were as common as Saturday morning cartoons. It is the story of one young man’s confrontation with both life and death and the struggle of another to make sense of the senseless. Author Biography: Bill Sullivan, a native of Dayton, Ohio, was born with adventure in his veins. He claims immunity to boredom because he can always think of something fun to do. Now, with a body too old and abused for basketball, he pursues a new adventure—the publication of his first book. |

High School Sports In California $8.96 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: California Interscholastic Federation, Camarillo Classic, Mission Valley Athletic League, Sac-Joaquin Section, North Coast Section. Excerpt: The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) is the governing body for high school sports in the state of California. It mirrors similar governing bodies in other states; however, it differs from others in that it covers most high schools in the state of California, both public and private. Few exceptions exist; five California high schools compete in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association instead, due to their proximity to Nevada and the difficulty they face in traveling to other California schools. CIF is a non-profit corporation. It is based in Alameda, California. The CIF was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1914 by a group of area school principals. It was founded in order to standardize rules and team structures between schools; it was also intended to prevent abuses such as “school shopping” by athletes and teams fielding players over high school age. Other school principals voluntarily entered into the program, and by 1917, the organization was established statewide. In 2005, CIF required that all student athletes sign a promise to not take any steroids or they face expulsion. CIF holds sectional championship events in the sports of American football, basketball, cross country (traditionally hosted at Woodward Park in Fresno), golf, track and field, girls volleyball, water polo, and wrestling. In addition, swimming times and diving scores are compared based on final results at section meets and ranked statewide to determine a state champion. However, there is no state championship meet. Cross country, track and field, basketball, volleyball and wrestling hold state-wide champi… More: |

Hoop Crazy! $5.99 When Nick and his pals suddenly find themselves short a man for the NBA-sponsored three-on-three tournament they plan to enter during the summer holidays, the solution seems simple enough. Nick, Kia and Mark are the key players on the team, so the fourth, though mandatory according to the rules, doesn’t really have to be good at the game. A surprise visit from Nick’s mother’s cousin brings Ned, who is exactly Nick’s age but not exactly an athlete, into the picture and onto the team. Nick and Ned, though related, are about as different as two boys born on the same day can be. And they don’t get along. Nick cares mostly about sports and basketball is his passion. Ned is crazy about bugs and lives out West in a national park, three hours’ drive from the nearest basketball court. The other three teammates figure that as long as they don’t actually have to use Ned in a game they will be fine. Then Mark sprains his ankle and can’t play in the tournament. Suddnely Nick and Kia must find a way to make Ned an integral part of the team. This turns out to be no small task! Hoop Crazy! is the third installment in award-winning author Eric Walters’ popular basketball stories in the Orca Young Readers series. Both Three on Three and Full Court Press have been immediate best-sellers. Eric Walters is very much in demand for his classroom presentations. James Naismith: The Man Who Invented Basketball $26.2 It seems unlikely that James Naismith, who grew up playing “Duck on the Rock” in the rural community of Almonte, Canada, would invent one of America’s most popular sports. But Rob Rains and Hellen Carpenter’s fascinating, in-depth biography James Naismith: The Man Who Invented Basketball shows how this young man-who wanted to be a medical doctor, or if not that, a minister (in fact, he was both)-came to create a game that has endured for over a century.James Naismith reveals how Naismith invented basketball in part to find an indoor activity to occupy students in the winter months. When he realized that the key to his game was that men could not run with the ball, and that throwing and jumping would eliminate the roughness of force, he was on to something. And while Naismith thought that other sports provided better exercise, he was pleased to create a game that “anyone could play.”With unprecedented access to the Naismith archives and documents, Rains and Carpenter chronicle how Naismith developed the original rules of basketball, coached the game at the University of Kansas-establishing college basketball in the process-and was honored for his work at the 1936 Olympic games in Berlin. |

Philadelphia Warriors Coaches $8.59 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Edward Gottlieb (September 15, 1898 December 7, 1979) was the first coach and manager of the Philadelphia Warriors in the BAA/NBA and the former owner and coach of the team from 1951 to 1962 when he sold the Philadelphia Warriors to San Francisco. The Kiev, Ukraine native was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor on April 20, 1972. The trophy that the NBA Rookie of the Year receives is named after Gottlieb. Few have blazed as many basketball trails as did Eddie Gottlieb, the Mogul of the NBA for its first 30 years. As organizer of and player for the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association (SPHAs) teams in the 1920s, he helped introduce Philadelphia to the sport of basketball. Then, along with a few other sports promoters, he organized the Basketball Association of America, the league that later became the NBA. Gottlieb coached the original Philadelphia Warriors, bought the team, and sent it to San Francisco in order to expand the game westward. He headed the NBA rules committee for 25 years, and when he died at age 81 he had been in charge of NBA scheduling for three decades. In 1971 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Gottlieb was about as important to the game of basketball as the basketball, fellow Hall of Famer Harry Litwack remarked. With his deep eyes and penchant for wearing bow ties, Gottlieb took on many duties. He started teams and organized leagues. He was in charge of semipro baseball in Philadelphia and made the schedule for the old Negro National League. He also helped coordinate the overseas tours of the Harlem Globetrotters. The NBA might have been able to get started without him, but it probably wouldnt have survived. Sportswriter Mike Lupica wrote in a eulogy,… More: |

Psychology of Champions: How to Win at Sports and Life with the Focus Edge of Super-Athletes $38.83 The first book to gather firsthand accounts of successful practices, and thinking habits, of sports legends and super-athletes—from across sports including football, baseball, basketball, boxing, golf, car-racing, and swimming—this work holds lessons that can power not only athletic success, but winning in any daily challenges of life or work. The result of years of research, Psychology of Champions offers the very personal words of star athletes who explain how they overcame such obstacles as fear, discouragement, and anxiety, and were able to move on to success. Each story—including from those of baseball great Ted Williams, basketball star Michael Jordan, football’s famed Deion Sanders, and dozens more from across sports —is unique. Yet, the authors determine that, when all is said and done, the overriding variables accounting for the greatest success fall into three categories: motivation, confidence, and concentration. Barrell and Ryback spell out the rules for such success after each section in this absorbing book. The result is a book that not only entertains and educates us with firsthand accounts of ever-popular sports heroes, but also instructs athletes, amateur or professional, and arguably anyone with a goal to achieve in work or life.In-the-moment accounts reveal just what to do in various critical periods of sports competition—from being at bat in baseball, to making an instantaneous decision as a quarterback, firing the winning basket in the dying moments of a game, or launching the winning move in boxing or judo. Barrell and Ryback draw the lessons together in what they term The Focus Edge mindset. That mindset—and this book— says one former Olympian, take greatness and make it accessible to you and me. |

Schiedsrichter $14.14 Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: A referee has authority to make decisions about play in many sports. Officials in various sports are known by a variety of titles, including referee, umpire, judge, linesman, commissaire, timekeeper or touch judge. The term referee originated in association football. Originally the team captains would consult with each other in order to resolve any dispute on the pitch. Eventually this role was delegated to an umpire. Each team would bring their own partisan umpire allowing the team captains to concentrate on the game. Later, the referee, a third “neutral” official was added, this referee would be “referred to” if the umpires could not resolve a dispute. The referee did not take his place on the pitch until 1891, when the umpires became linesmen (now assistant referees). Today, in many amateur football matches, each side will still supply their own partisan assistant referees (still commonly called club linesmen) to assist the neutral referee appointed by the governing football association. An umpire is an official in the sport of Australian rules football. Games are overseen by one to three field umpires, two boundary umpires, and two goal umpires. In baseball and softball, the umpire is the person(s) charged with officiating the game. Multiple umpires-usually two, three or four, but sometimes six for championship games-are typically assigned to a game. In international basketball and in college basketball, the referee is the lead official in a game, and is assisted by either one or two umpires. In the National Basketball Association, the lead official is referred to by the term crew chief and the two other officials are referees. All of the officials in a basketball game are generally accepted to have the same authority as the lead official and therefore they are collectively known as the officials or sometimes, misleadingly, the referees. In cricket, the match referee is an off- |

She’s Got Next $13.95 When Melissa King, a transplanted southerner in search of connection, finds herself on the lean, mean streets of Chicago, she turns to her childhood passion for basketball. In her late twenties, King is at a crossroads in her life, and the randomness of the game as it is played on the streets suits her mood. The rules are unwritten, the teams a haphazard collection of players, and unlike anything else around her, the courts feel like home. So wherever there is a game, she gets her ball and goes. From the rough, male-dominated inner-city courts of Chicago, she travels to lazy oceanside pickup games in sunny California and dilapidated gyms in her Bible Belt home state. In a street-smart voice full of understated humor and palpable hope, King chronicles her journey, using the rhythms of the court to riff on the issues of race, class, gender, religion, sexual politics, and love. Ultimately, through the jubilant swish of the net, the brunt of an egregious foul, and the knowing glance of a stranger who says yes, you can be on my team, King discovers in those rare moments on the court the countless things she wants in life but cannot name. |

St. Bonaventure Bonnies Men’s Basketball Coaches: Jim O’brien (Basketball, Born 1949) $9.53 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Jim O’Brien (born April 9, 1949 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American college basketball coach who has served as coach of St. Bonaventure University (1982-1986), Boston College (1986-1997), and most recently as the twelfth head coach of Ohio State University men’s basketball team (1997-2004). O’Brien was hired as head coach on April 7, 1997 after Ohio State had fired previous coach Randy Ayers. O’Brien guided the Buckeye program to the 1999 Final Four, 2000 and 2002 Big Ten regular-season co-championships, the 2002 Big Ten Tournament Championship, four 20-win seasons and a school record four-consecutive NCAA tournament appearances (1999-2002). On June 8, 2004, then-Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger fired O’Brien for alleged NCAA rules violations. After a trial during which the former Chairman of the NCAA Committee on Infractions testified that O’Brien had not engaged in a violation of NCAA rules, the Ohio Court of Claims determined that Ohio State breached its contract with O’Brien by terminating him and that the school engaged in conduct that was “not consistent with good faith and fair dealing” in terminating Coach O’Brien and awarded him $2.4 million. A high school honorable mention All-American at St. Francis Prep in Brooklyn, O’Brien went on to attend and then graduate from Boston College in 1971 with a degree in marketing. He was the recipient of the university’s scholar-athlete award as a senior. At the NYCHAA semi-finals in 1967, Jim executed one of the most unbelievable plays in basketball. Driving downcourt on two defenders, he dribbled between them and behind his back right-handed. When the defenders went for the ball on the next dribble, Jim passed it behind the back left-handed, to a trailing teammate for a layup. The fan… More: |
