sorting in excel does not work the way I would like?

I am building a spreadsheet for a sports competition where I have one worksheet with box scores from a number of basketball games. I then have another worksheet where I have pulled the stats for each player from the box scores on the first worksheet. So for each stat I have two columns, one lists player names and the other shows the stat (points for instance). I want to sort these columns in decending order by points so that it shows a leader board. I’m having all kinds of problems though. I think I’ve found that the sort just doesn’t seem to work when the cells contain formulas. I tested this theory by pasting just the values and I was able to sort that newly pasted section.

My other problem is that I want it to update in real time as I add scores to the box scores worksheet, but I find that I have to manually sort every time I want to see an updated list and even that has to be done from a pasted list of values as I described above.

Thanks!!

I think that you can solve your problem with the vlookup function (if your data is in columns) or the hlookup function (data in rows). Let me know if you need help with these functions.
