Here Are 4 More Basketball Terms That Every Fan Needs TO Know

Should you watch basketball on TV, you’ll hear a bewildering number of basketball terms. You will find a vast number of internet sites out there that do a sufficient job of detailing the dull and routine basketball terms which are heard daily. The concentration for this article, however, is to find the unconventional basketball terms. Instead of detailing the definition of dribbling, as an example, we would rather focus on alley oop. To that end, we have listed the four most interesting basketball terms.

Basketball Terms Number One: Hack a Shaq

Even though he’s proven himself to be an All-Star in virtually every aspect of the game, Shaquille O’Neal is really a horrid free-throw shooter. Standard basketball strategy, especially in the final moments of the game, would be to foul your opponent so that you can force him to the free-throw line. This is especially true for players like Shaquille O’Neal. As a result of his wretched free throw shooting skills, the other team is unafraid to foul him at any time. Hence the term Hack A Shaq. A highly positioned hack towards a lousy free-throw shooter will equal to zero points given up, and the defensive squad are certain to get control of the ball in the bargain.

Basketball Terms Number Two: Alley Oop

This basketball term describes the pass tossed (usually by a back court player) to a player who has already become airbourne and is closing in on the basket. When done properly, it is a thing of beauty. The players get excited and the audience gets juiced However when it’s been performed badly, it may be truly an ugly play with no points scored and the defensive squad ending up with the ball.

Basketball Terms Number Three: All Ball

This phrase is heard mainly from the referee while a potential foul has been committed. If, within the referee’s judgment, there was no physical contact, that he will state the guy got all ball. In other words, the defensive player slapped the ball while managing to avoid the opposing player’s body.

Basketball Terms Number Four: Way Downtown

I believe this term was started on ESPN Sports Center. It refers to an excellent 3 point shot that seems to originate from an extremely long distance. It is not uncommon to see shooting guards shift farther and farther back from the three point line to execute these types of shots. It’s as if he or she is purposely attempting to produce a highlight reel moment.

Conclusion:

As virtually any sports fanatic can confirm, it is very simple to be overcome with the minutia of your favored sport. You will find terms for pretty much everything that occurs on a basketball court, a hockey rink, a football field, or a baseball diamond. It’s our viewpoint that the unusual and colorful terms would be the most interesting ones. That’s the reason we listed our top four favorite basketball terms in this article.

Baseball at the University of Michigan (Images of Baseball Series)

Baseball at the University of Michigan (Images of Baseball Series)

$21.99

Baseball at the University of Michigan has had a long and rich tradition. Base ball, to use the contemporary vernacular, began as a club sport during the 1860s. By the dawn of the 20th century, the sport had evolved into the most popular spring leisure event in which students participated. Crowds of greater than 500 were not unusual, at a time when enrollment at the university was approximately 2500 students. Each class and college fielded a team. Prominent names in UM baseball history include the legendary Walker brothers, the first African Americans to play major league baseball, and Branch Rickey, who developed the powerful Dodger teams of the 1940s and integrated baseball with the signing of Jackie Robinson. George Sisler, among the greatest in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, began his career as a Michigan pitcher. And of course there was Ray Fisher, who coached Michigan for 38 years. The end of the century was marked by scandal, but it also brought major league stars such as Hal Morris, Jim Abbot and Barry Larkin, as well as David Parrish and Jake Fox, potential stars of the future. In the shadow of UM football and basketball, baseball is sometimes considered the “other” sport. But in terms of excitement and accessibility to the students, it is still “Number One.”

Chapters: University of Tennessee Basketball, Thompson-boling Arena, Knoxville Noise, Tennessee Mud Frogs, Murfreesboro Musicians, Alumni Memorial Gym, Chattanooga Steamers. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Thompson-Boling Arena is a 21,000 seat multi-purpose arena on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee. The arena opened in 1987. It is home to the Tennessee Volunteers (men) and Lady Vols (women) basketball teams. It is named after B. Ray Thompson and former university president Dr. Edward J. Boling. The basketball court is named “The Summitt” after Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt. It replaced the Stokely Athletic Center. The mammoth octagonal building lies just northwest of the Tennessee River, and just southwest of Neyland Stadium. As an echo of its neighbor and a tribute to the brick-and-mortar pattern atop Ayres Hall, the baselines of the court are now painted in the familiar orange-and-white checkerboard pattern. In terms of seating capacity, Thompson-Boling was at one time the largest facility ever built specifically for basketball in the United States with a seating capacity of 24,678 until its 2007 renovation. The men’s record crowd was 25,610 for a game against Kentucky on January 21, 1989, which is also the SEC record for a regular-season game. The Lady Vols record crowd of 24,653, set at their win over archrival UConn on January 7, 2006, is also the all-time record for an NCAA regular-season women’s game. The facility hosted the 1989 Southeastern Conference men’s basketball tournament. It hosted games of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in 1994 and 1999, and the 1990 NCAA Women’s Final Four. It is also a concert venue, holding up to 25,000 for many concerts. In August 2006, ground was broken for the Pratt P… More:

Featured on NPR and CNNIn a riveting page-turner, NBA referee Bob Delaney reveals the clandestine life he led before becoming one of professional basketball’s most respected referees. In 1975, Delaney had spent only a year and a half as a New Jersey State Trooper when his superiors approached him with a tantalizing yet dangerous undercover assignment: to infiltrate the Mob. Delaney accepted, and became Bobby Covert, the president of Alamo Trucking, a fully-operational business used by law enforcement as flypaper for snagging crooks. At the height of The Godfather era, Delaney wore a wire and lived among wiseguys who modeled themselves on their on-screen counterparts, quoting lines from “The Movie” and boasting of how often they’d seen it. Delaney even crossed paths with Joe Pistone, the real-life Donnie Brasco (though neither knew the other was undercover), knowing all the while that a single slip could get him killed.Ultimately gathering enough evidence to convict 30 members of the Bruno and Genovese crime families, Project Alpha was a success, but Delaney struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and traces of Stockholm syndrome after getting too close to those he investigated. Therapy helped him come to terms with all he’d endured during his three tense years undercover, and, once a college basketball star, Delaney began officiating high school and intramural games as a way to rebuild his life—eventually working his way up to the NBA, where he has been a referee for more than two decades.

Dictionary of Sports and Games Terminology

Dictionary of Sports and Games Terminology

$45

The specialized jargon of some sports can be quite esoteric. Non-Americans, for example, are likely puzzled by baseball terms such as bunt, cut-off man, and safety squeeze, while the non-British may pause over cricket’s Chinaman, doosra, golden duck, off-break, popping crease, and yorker. This new dictionary gives the definitions of more than 8,000 terms used in sports and games from around the world, including mainstream sports like basketball and billiards alongside the more obscure netball and snooker. Entries cover sports equipment, strategies, venues, qualifying categories, awards, and administrative bodies, while a comprehensive system of cross-references offers assistance and clarification when needed. An appendix lists standard abbreviations of sports ruling bodies and administrative organizations.

Everyone's all-Americans: Race, men's college athletics, and the ideal of equal opportunity.

Everyone’s all-Americans: Race, men’s college athletics, and the ideal of equal opportunity.

$69

Reactions to the integration of college sports provide a unique perspective on shifting attitudes toward race, manliness, equality, and the quest for civil rights. As previously-white institutions of higher learning gradually (and grudgingly) opened their playing fields to African-American athletes in men’s basketball and football, black and white spectators interpreted mixed-race team sports in often contradictory ways. This dissertation analyzes the public discourse that surrounded five black male pioneer athletes at predominantly white schools. It reveals the anxieties, hopes, frustrations, and triumphs of ordinary Americans on both sides of the color line as they encountered new public representations of black masculinity, negotiated the changing terms of racial identity, and reconsidered the American ideal of equal opportunity. Although often relegated to the realms of entertainment and leisure, college sports were central to discussions of fairness and equality in American life, as observers consistently employed sports metaphors, such as the “level playing field,” to discuss the ideal of equal opportunity. Just as countless Americans debated, and continue to debate, policies such as affirmative action, differing expectations of sports as a model for society revealed the tensions that underlay the significant changes in the nation’s racial politics. The range of these diverse reactions can be seen in the project’s five case studies: Paul Robeson at Rutgers College, 1915-19; the 1939 University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) football team; Wilt Chamberlain at the University of Kansas, 1955-58; Charlie Scott at the University of North Carolina (UNC), 1966-70; and the integration of football at the University of Alabama, 1969-73.

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: The Commonwealth of Kentucky () is a state located in the East Central United States of America. As classified by the United States Census Bureau, Kentucky is a Southern state. Kentucky is one of four U.S. states constituted as a commonwealth (the others being Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts). Originally a part of Virginia, in 1792 it became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky is the 37th largest state in terms of total area, the 36th largest in land area, and ranks 26th in population. Kentucky is known as the “Bluegrass State”, a nickname based on the fact that native bluegrass is present in many of the pastures throughout the state, based on the fertile soil. It made possible the breeding of high-quality livestock, especially thoroughbred racing horses. It is a land with diverse environments and abundant resources, including the world’s longest cave system, Mammoth Cave National Park; the greatest length of navigable waterways and streams in the Lower 48 states; and the two largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River. It is also home to the highest per capita number of deer and turkey in the United States, the largest free-ranging elk herd east of Montana, and the nation’s most productive coalfield. Kentucky is also known for thoroughbred horses, horse racing, bourbon distilleries, bluegrass music, automobile manufacturing, tobacco, and college basketball. Narrow country roads bounded by stone and wood plank fences are a fixture in the Kentucky Bluegrass region. The origin of Kentucky’s name (variously spelled Cane-tuck-ee, Cantucky, Kain-tuck-ee, and Kentuckee before its modern spelling was accepted) does not have a consensus. Living at the Movies

Living at the Movies

$15

Originally published in 1973, Living at the Movies was the first aboveground publication of the work of Jim Carroll, author of the now-classic Basketball Diaries and a singer-songwriter whom Newsweek called “contender for the title of rock’s new poet laureate.” In these poems, all written before the age of twenty-two, Carroll shows an uncanny virtuosity. His power and poisoned purity of vision are reminiscent of Arthur Rimbaud, and, like the strongest poets of the New York School, Carroll transforms the everyday details of city life into poetry. In language at once delicate, hallucinatory, and menacing, his major themes—love, friendship, the exquisite pains and pleasures of drugs, and, above all, the ever-present city—emerge in an atmosphere where dream and reality mingle on equal terms. It is an astonishing debut by an important American writer and artist.

Optimizing Strength Training:Designing Nonlinear Perioztn Wrkouts

Optimizing Strength Training:Designing Nonlinear Perioztn Wrkouts

$7.75

The strength training strategy of linear periodization has long been recognized as an efficient system of resistance training. But—until now—no one had researched and explored the potential benefits of a nonlinear periodization training program. Authors William Kraemer and Steven Fleck delve into nonlinear, or undulating, periodization to examine how it can result in long-term fitness and performance gains by adding more variety to workouts and optimizing each training session. In doing so, Dr. Kraemer and Dr. Fleck pioneer this newest periodization training technique and have become the leading proponents of this unique training method. Their innovative approach to strength training is shown to facilitate the training process and enhance performance, a fact Dr. Kraemer has demonstrated in several ongoing studies with basketball teams at the University of Connecticut. Optimizing Strength Training: Designing Nonlinear Periodization Workouts explains how nonlinear periodization works and then demonstrates how to create nonlinear periodization training programs, including programs for special populations. Readers will learn that by creating different workouts for each day, they can emphasize exclusive training styles in every workout to maximize adaptation as well as ensure adequate recovery from the rigors of training. Fitness professionals and coaches will discover that this unique training style reduces the boredom encountered when using similar workout protocols for two to four weeks at a time and therefore lends itself to creating a more satisfied client base. Using practical and user-friendly terms, the authors provide the knowledge required for understanding nonlinear periodization and training principles, selecting acute program variables, and discerning the practical considerations of nonlinear periodization before undertaking training. They also provide sample workouts using nonlinear

Outside Shooter (Sports and American Culture Series): A Memoir

Outside Shooter (Sports and American Culture Series): A Memoir

$10.31

Philip Raisor was on the losing side in two of the most storied basketball games ever played. He started at guard for the Muncie Central Bearcats, who fell in the 1954 Indiana state final to tiny Milan, the David-over-Goliath event that inspired the movie Hoosiers. On a basketball scholarship to the University of Kansas, he watched his Wilt Chamberlain–led Jayhawks lose the 1957 NCAA championship in triple overtime to North Carolina. In Outside Shooter, Raisor recounts the hard knocks and hard-won triumphs of a basketball odyssey across 1950s America, from Indiana to Kansas to Louisiana, and from adolescence to adulthood. This was an era in which a racially divided society was taking halting steps toward integration, and few places held more tension than the sports arena. Raisor saw firsthand the toll of racism in the inner rage and sorrow of Muncie’s star player, John Casterlow, whose life followed a trajectory from playing the legendary Oscar Robertson to a draw—almost—to death in the streets of Detroit at age twenty-three. Later, at Louisiana State University after having transferred from Kansas, Raisor, spurred by the memory of Casterlow, would join in hazardous early attempts to integrate the LSU campus. From Indiana to Louisiana, he sees the ordeal of racism reveal character—including his own—at depths beyond the illumination even of competitive sport.            Devoted though Raisor was to basketball, Outside Shooter captures the period of his life in which he gradually stopped defining himself in terms of the game. As the rise and fall of his fortunes on the basketball court become overshadowed by the shifting patterns of his larger life—the competing measures of acceptance and expectation from his family and companions; the courage and challenge offered by a young woman equally bent on accomplishment; his struggles with

Present Tense and Personal Effects: A Pair of Comedies

PRESENT TENSE. It’s the day of the high-school prom, and Norm Prescot, a love-smitten teenager, is beset with doubts. Will his girlfriend, Ann, keep their date or will she claim that she has to stay at the bedside of her aunt Gladys, who (she says) has been stricken with gallstones? As he waits, Norm’s agonies multiply: Does Ann really have an Aunt Gladys? Or is she just using that as an excuse to pick up with her ex-boyfriend, Doug, a thick-headed jock, who is not only captain of the football, baseball and basketball teams but also Norm’s obnoxious editor on the school newspaper? In a series of imaginative (and very funny) blackouts Norm’s worst fears become real as we see all that is going on inside his head through wildly exaggerated daydreams depicting the fear and embarrassment of possible rejection by the girl he loves and the gnawing suspicion that she has not been faithful to him. All ends happily, however, when Norm is jarred back to reality by Ann’s arrival—and, with a sign of relief, accepts her assurances that she really does love him after all. (3 men, 3 women.) PERSONAL EFFECTS. The scene is the living room of the Mallory’s Midwestern home, where Kevin Mallory, a rather meek and malleable high-school student, who has a history of striking out with girls, has decided to give a party (hopefully an orgy) in his parents’ absence. Encouraged by his more “sophisticated” friends, Artie and Bill, Kevin invites Eileen Sorenson, a new girl at school whom he’d like to get to know better and who, his buddies claim, is “hot” for him. However, all of Kevin’s plans go quickly and hilariously awry, and the party descends into chaos as fights break out, advances are rejected andresentment mounts. After the dust settles, Kevin comes to terms with the fact that he and his cohorts have behaved like jerks and that in order to be accepted by a girl she must be treated like a person and not an object. The blinding realization points Kevin toward a new direction in his

Elisabeth Page is the daughter of Ben Page, yes, that’s right, THE world famous novelist. And yes, she’s also the sister of Rascal Page, world famous novelist in his own right. So what does Elisabeth do? Much to her family’s disappointment, Elisabeth is a pastry chef. And a pretty damn good one, at Beverly, the hottest restaurant in LA. The last relationship Elisabeth had was with Will, a man she grew up with and whose family ran in the same social circles as her family. But Will’s constant jaunts around the world have left her lonely and brokenhearted in L.A. That is until Daniel Sullivan bids on one of Elisabeth’s pastry tutorials at a charity auction. Daniel is everything her family is not: a basketball coach, a non-intellectual, his family doesn’t summer on Martha’s Vineyard, and the only metaphors he uses are about passing the ball and being a team player. But somehow they fit. Between her family, Will, and the new cooking show that Elisabeth is recruited to star in, Elisabeth’s life is suddenly incredibly new and different—the question is, can she embrace being happy or has her family conditioned her to think she’s just not good enough?Liza Palmer expertly depicts a woman trying to come to terms with professional success, personal success, and finally dealing with a family that might love her from the bottom of their heart but doesn’t necessarily have her best interest always at heart.

Observers of American society have long noted the distinctive contribution of African Americans to the nation’s cultural life. We find references to African American music and dance, black forms of oral expression, even a black style of playing basketball. But what do such terms really mean? Is it legitimate to talk about a distinct African American aesthetic, or is this simply a vestige of an outmoded racial essentialism? What makes a particular form of cultural expression “black” other than the fact that some African Americans may practice it?

Hapoel Ussishkin was founded in 2007. The club was founded by supporters of Hapoel Tel Aviv B.C. following the club’s relegation to the Israeli 3rd tier, and after years characterized by the lack of financial support by the club’s owner Shaul Eizenberg and poor management, which led it to bankruptcy, and finally relegation to the 4th tier, and most notably for the demolition of the historic Ussishkin Arena. The demolition was only made possible after a settlement between city officials and Eizenberg which went ahead and signed the agreement against the will of the majority of supporters and for a small compensation fee. This was the trigger for the foundation of the new club. Backed with an astronomical budget in 5th tier terms of over 300,000 NIS The team finished its first season with a perfect record of 22-0 and had qualified to the 4th division. The club also managed to win another title by taking the Israeli 5th Division Union Cup, also without losing a single game. This season was also finished with a perfect record, 22-0, and the team qualified to the 3rd division. In Thursday, April 30, 2009, the team won the Israeli 4th and 3rd Division Union Cup, winning over Hapoel Keffar-Sabba in the final game. Before the 2009-2010 season started, it was decided that Hapoel Ussishkin will not play in the same district as Hapoel Tel Aviv, who plays in … More:

Tricksters in the Madhouse: Lakers vs. Globetrotters, 1948

$0.99

In February 1948 the brand-new, all-white Minneapolis Lakers were arguably the greatest basketball team in America, favored to win the World Professional Basketball Tournament later that year. Meanwhile the Harlem Globetrotters, at the center of black basketball, were riding their own incredible 103-game winning streak. Best known to white audiences for their clowning and comedy, the Globetrotters were not even thought to be in the same league with the mighty Lakers. So when these two powerhouses met for the first time—on February 19, 1948, before an audience of eighteen thousand in Chicago Stadium—basketball fans everywhere were in for an eye-opening performance. Tricksters in the Madhouse is the story of this pivotal meeting, a game that would encapsulate the growing racial tensions of the era, particularly the struggle of black Americans to gain legitimacy in the segregated world of sports. Play-by-play, John Christgau recreates the heart-stopping game that would shock white basketball fans raised to view black athletes in separate and unequal terms. Through in-depth interviews and extensive research, Christgau brings this critical match-up to life. By looking beyond the drama in the arena to the broader events of the day, he also puts the game in its sociological context, revealing how, even as it enacted the racial inequities of the time, this crucial game represented an important step toward equality.

In the WNBA she played for four teams: the Houston Comets, Phoenix Mercury, Seattle Storm and the Washington Mystics. The last two of her terms in the WNBA were brief, with the second lasting one week. In the WKBL, Taylor played for the Turkish team Botasspor Adana on two separate occasions, 2006 and 2007. In contrast to her short tenures in the WNBA, Taylor has enjoyed far greater success in Europe, especially in the Polish Women’s League, where she has achieved a level of recognition comparable to that of Lisa Leslie in the WNBA. Taylor finished her first season with the highest number of points scored, and her overall evaluation was the highest in the league. She was also awarded Center of the Year and earned a place on the 1st Team, All-Imports Team and the All-Defensive Team. Taylor is well known for her 6 ft and 8 in (2.03 m) frame. This has made her the tallest player in the history of UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball, and she is one of five players, including Allyssa DeHaan, Katie Feenstra, Zheng Haixia and Maria Stepanova, who have tied for second tallest person to ever play in the WNBA. Only Margo Dydek, at 7 ft 2 in (2.18 m), is taller than Taylor. Off the court, Taylor is known for her unassuming ways and sense of humor. Chapters: Pittsburgh Panthers Basketball Venues, Pittsburgh Panthers Football Venues, Forbes Field, Heinz Field, Three Rivers Stadium, Mellon Arena, Exposition Park, Pitt Stadium, Petersen Events Center, Recreation Park, Trees Hall, Fitzgerald Field House, Motor Square Garden. Excerpt: Forbes Field was a baseball park in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1909 to 1971. It was the third home of the Pittsburgh Pirates Major League Baseball (MLB) team, and the first home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the city’s National Football League (NFL) franchise. The stadium also served as the home football field for the University of Pittsburgh “Pitt” Panthers from 1909 to 1924. The stadium was named after British general John Forbes who fought in the French and Indian War, and named the city in 1758. The US$1 million ($24.1 million in present-day terms) project was initiated by Pittsburgh Pirates’ owner Barney Dreyfuss, with the goal of replacing his franchise’s then-current home, Exposition Park. The stadium was made of concrete and steel (one of the first of its kind) in order to increase its lifespan. The Pirates opened Forbes Field on June 30, 1909 against Chicago Cubs, and would play the final game also against the Cubs on June 28, 1970. The field itself featured a large playing surface, with the batting cage placed in the deepest part of center field during games. Seating was altered multiple times throughout the stadium’s life; at times fans were permitted to sit on the grass in the outfield during overflow crowds. The Pirates won three World Series while at Forbes Field and the other original tenant, the Pittsburgh Panthers football team had five undefeated seasons before moving in 1924. Vagueness in Context

Vagueness in Context

Stewart Shapiro’s aim in Vagueness in Context is to develop both a philosophical and a formal, model-theoretic account of the meaning, function, and logic of vague terms in an idealized version of a natural language like English. It is a commonplace that the extensions of vague terms vary with such contextual factors as the comparison class and paradigm cases. A person can be tall with respect to male accountants and not tall (even short) with respect to professional basketball players. The main feature of Shapiro’s account is that the extensions (and anti-extensions) of vague terms also vary in the course of a conversation, even after the external contextual features, such as the comparison class, are fixed. A central thesis is that in some cases, a competent speaker of the language can go either way in the borderline area of a vague predicate without sinning against the meaning of the words and the non-linguistic facts. Shapiro calls this open texture, borrowing the term from Friedrich Waismann. The formal model theory has a similar structure to the supervaluationist approach, employing the notion of a sharpening of a base interpretation. In line with the philosophical account, however, the notion of super-truth does not play a central role in the development of validity. The ultimate goal of the technical aspects of the work is to delimit a plausible notion of logical consequence, and to explore what happens with the sorites paradox.Later chapters deal with what passes for higher-order vagueness – vagueness in the notions of "determinacy" and "borderline" — and with vague singular terms, or objects. In each case, the philosophical picture is developed by extending and modifying the original account. This is followed with modifications to the model theory and the central meta-theorems.As Shapiro sees it, vagueness is a linguistic phenomenon, due to the kinds of languages that humans speak. But vagueness is also due to
