Basketball Training Drills For Youth

basketball training drills for youth
Does anyone coach a youth basketball team?

i need to interview someone who is a youth basketball coach and i was wondering if anyone one had the time to answer some of these questions i have.

1. how long have you been coaching?
2. what is the most affective workout to use on adolescents?
3.what condition workouts do you use on your team?
4. what’s the most challenging thing about coaching a team of young children?
5. what is the most rewarding thing about coaching a team?
6. what do you do to your kids who need help progressing?
7. whats the most important factor in training children?
8. what kind of drills do you use on your kids?

this is for a school project and i would really appreciate it if someone could answer these questions. it has to be a youth basketball coach

1. 20 years

2. Work on fundamentals, Close Out on the shooter, Boxing out, rebounding and keeping the ball high (above the shoulders) to either go back up with a put back or pivot and outlet, (I do this as a single drill: Close out Box out and rebound). Work on ball handling and dribbling drills, do not let them watch the ball. Work on defensive stance and positioning (Ball – U – Man) always stay between your man and the basket and position yourself (sag)so that you can see your man and the ball at the same time with out turning your head from side to side like your watching a ping pong game. Guard moves jab step, cross over, rocker, short long. Post moves, Power dribble, drop step, up and under, turn around jumper. Moving with out the ball, cutting, screen for the ball, screen away from the ball. With the ball
: Always pass and move, cut to the basket, screen for the ball, screen away from the ball. Never pass and stand. Work on passing: Chest pass, step through and pass, two handed over the head (soccer) pass, how to make an entry pass to the post player by recognizing where the defender is playing on your post player, (right hip, left hip, straight behind or in front) and last but not least Shooting drills: start in close and progressively move farther out focusing on proper form.

3. Run, Suicides, 17′s, laps, run hard on every full court drill (11 man, 3 man weave, etc…)

4. Attention span, keeping practice interesting.

5. Seeing the progress of each individual player, and their ability to learn to play together.

6. Give them specific drills that help work on their weaknesses. Encourage them to work on these things in their drive way at home. Also try to encourage their Dad (parent) to get out there with them, they will stick with it longer if the have a parent that is willing to practice with them.

7. Patience

8. Go to coachesclipboard.net there are drills for every aspect of the game. Try them all and stick with the ones your particular group of kids enjoy. If they like it they will do it with enthusiasm.
Personally I like to use the Close out, Box out, Rebound drill I described above. It teaches the defense to close out hard for the first two thirds and slide in the last third so the shooter can’t dribble past them as they charge, then to box out the shooter and go get the rebound. At the same time have your shooter work on shooting with proper form, focusing on the basket not the defender and then trying to follow their shot for an offensive rebound. An alternative is to have them read the defense and choose between an outside shot or making a move and trying to drive past the defender that is closing out, and going in for a layup.
