  16. Track and Field – There is no question really that the Americans are best known for these events when it comes to the Olympics.
  17. Horse Racing – Still very much considered the English sport, but the Americans have some very good if not better riders.
  18. Rock Climbing – The Americans have really taken to this, and they do have some of the best possible scenery for it.
  19. Extreme Sports – The kind of sports where you know that you could die.

Excerpt: The Old Oquirrh Bucket (named after the Oquirrh Mountains to the west of Salt Lake City) is the symbol of in-state basketball supremacy in Utah. Every year since 1974 the trophy has been awarded to the in-state college team (Utah State, Utah, Southern Utah, BYU, UVU, and Weber State) which has the best win-loss record against in-state competition. In 1974, a proposal was presented to create a trophy a symbol to be awarded annually to Utah’s best college basketball team. The concept was accepted and for the first two years the in-state title was awarded to the Aggies, although no actual trophy had been determined. In 1977, after Weber State won the title for the first time, an Ogden businessman located a pioneer bucket at a local auction, complete with a history of how it had been found. It has since become the traveling trophy emblematic of Utah college basketball supremacy. The plaque on the bucket includes a map with the names and locations of the 4 original schools (BYU, U of U, USU, and WSC). SUU and UVU did not field Division-I basketball programs at the time the trophy was created, but have since become NCAA Division-I programs. The plaque includes the caption “The Oquirrh Bucket Utah State Collegiate Champ Basketball”. Utah has won the bucket 14 times, followed by Utah State and BYU with 9 victories, and Weber State with 4. … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3007311

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: The National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player (MVP) is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given since the 1955-56 NBA season. The winner receives the Maurice Podoloff Trophy, which is named in honor of the first commissioner (then president) of the NBA who served from 1946 until his retirement in 1963. MVP voting takes place immediately following the regular season. Until the 1979-80 NBA season, the MVP was originally selected by a vote of NBA players. However, since the 1980-81 season, the award is decided by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, each of whom casts a vote for first to fifth place selections. Each first-place vote is worth 10 points; each second-place vote is worth seven; each third-place vote is worth five, fourth-place is worth three and fifth-place is worth one. Starting from 2010, one ballot was cast by fans through online voting. The player with the highest point total wins the award. Since the 1982-83 season, every player who has won the award has played for a team with at least 50 regular-season wins (except for Karl Malone in the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season, in which

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: The Heisman Memorial Trophy Award (usually known colloquially as the Heisman Trophy or the Heisman), named after the former Brown University and University of Pennsylvania college football player and coach John Heisman, is awarded annually by the Heisman Trophy Trust to the most outstanding player in collegiate football. While it is not the only award honoring the most outstanding player in college football – Walter Camp Award and Maxwell Award are awarded to the “best player” – it is considered the most prestigious and receives the most media attention. It is awarded in early December before the postseason bowl games begin. Only one player has ever won the Heisman twice, Archie Griffin of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 1974 and 1975. Tim Tebow of the Florida Gators, Sam Bradford of the Oklahoma Sooners, and Mark Ingram, Jr. of the Alabama Crimson Tide have won the award as sophomores. Sophomores have won the last three consecutive years. Winning the Heisman Trophy does not guarantee future success at the NFL level. Only eight winners of the Heisman are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but four winners have also been named Most Valuable Player in a Super Bowl. Some other winners have gone on to play in other professional sports, including Bo Jackson in baseball and Charlie Ward in basketball. The trophy itself, designed by sculptor Frank Eliscu, is modeled after Ed Smith, a leading player in 1934 for the now defunct New York University football team. The trophy is made out of cast bronze, is 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) tall and weighs 25 pounds (11.3 kg).

Excerpt: Edward Gottlieb (September 15, 1898 December 7, 1979) was the first coach and manager of the Philadelphia Warriors in the BAA/NBA and the former owner and coach of the team from 1951 to 1962 when he sold the Philadelphia Warriors to San Francisco. The Kiev, Ukraine native was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a contributor on April 20, 1972. The trophy that the NBA Rookie of the Year receives is named after Gottlieb. Few have blazed as many basketball trails as did Eddie Gottlieb, the Mogul of the NBA for its first 30 years. As organizer of and player for the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association (SPHAs) teams in the 1920s, he helped introduce Philadelphia to the sport of basketball. Then, along with a few other sports promoters, he organized the Basketball Association of America, the league that later became the NBA. Gottlieb coached the original Philadelphia Warriors, bought the team, and sent it to San Francisco in order to expand the game westward. He headed the NBA rules committee for 25 years, and when he died at age 81 he had been in charge of NBA scheduling for three decades. In 1971 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Gottlieb was about as important to the game of basketball as the basketball, fellow Hall of Famer Harry Litwack remarked. With his deep eyes and penchant for wearing bow ties, Gottlieb took on many duties. He started teams and organized leagues. He was in charge of semipro baseball in Philadelphia and made the schedule for the old Negro National League. He also helped coordinate the overseas tours of the Harlem Globetrotters. The NBA might have been able to get started without him, but it probably wouldnt have survived. Sportswriter Mike Lupica wrote in a eulogy,… More:

When Fry played safety and quarterback for Odessa High School in the 1940s, their stands routinely had sellout crowds. In Fry’s senior year, Odessa won 14 straight games, scoring almost 400 points and allowing about 50. Odessa did not commit a single turnover all season. The Texas state playoffs placed every school into a single bracket. At the end of the year, Hayden Fry quarterbacked Odessa to the Texas state high school championship in 1946. Fry then played at Baylor University from 19471950. Baylor had a 26132 record during Fry’s four years there. Fry started a few games as an upperclassman at … More:

It’s hard enough for a shrimp like Riley to fit in. He just doesn’t want to be the weak link as his bunk competes for the Camp Olympia Trophy.Riley knows he’s no good at strength and accuracy games like basketball and softball. But when it comes to speed and endurance events, like running and swimming, he’s better than he looks. The league is headquartered in Japan. At the end of the playoffs every year the winner is awarded The Championship Trophy . The league was formed in 2003 due to declining popularity in the Japan Ice Hockey League and the folding of the Korea Ice Hockey League. It was formed with the goal of promoting hockey and developing players’ skills. The league initially comprised five teams in two countries. It expanded to highs of four countries (200405 season) and nine teams (200506 season) although it is currently made up of seven teams from three countries. The league draws most of its players from the home countries of its teams. However, to help build skill and raise the level of competitiveness the league allows each team a certain number of foreign imports on their roster . History 2003 – 2008 The league was formed after the collapse of the Korean ice hockey league and dissolution of the Japanese league. It was started with the goal of promoting hockey in Asia as well as helping the various participating countries develop their hockey programs and increase their showing in the Olympics . The first season was a shortened season of only five teams, and played as a tournament rather than a regular season. Four Japanese teams and a Korean team participated. The tournament lasted just two months and each team played four games, two at home and two away, against each other. Due to the shortened tournament format there were no playoffs

He was a consensus All-American in his final two seasons. As a freshman in 1939, he caught 15 passes for 87 yards from future Heisman Trophy winner Angelo Bertelli . Excerpt: The Beehive Boot, which signifies instate football supremacy among Division I universities from the state of Utah, was conceived in 1971. The authentic pioneer boot, which is estimated to be well over 100 years old, is awarded annually to the Utah school with the best record against its instate NCAA Division I foes. After residing in Logan on USU’s campus for the first four years of its existence, the trophy spent most of the next three decades in the hands of BYU. The Cougars won the interstate series 19 of the next 27 years, including five in a row from 1983 to 1987. Utah… More:
