At the beginning of the 1998 season, this team was anything but united. H…

Against All Odds: My Life of Hardship, Fast Breaks, and Second Chances

Against All Odds: My Life of Hardship, Fast Breaks, and Second Chances

$0.01

Scott Brown’s greatest win did not occur on a cold January election night in 2010 when he came from behind to capture the U.S. Senate seat held by Ted Kennedy for nearly fifty years. It began when he survived a savage beating at the drunken hands of a stepfather when he was barely six years old while trying to protect his mother. In this gripping memoir of resilience and redemption, written with clear-eyed conviction and unflinching candor, Brown recalls his difficult childhood marked by innumerable hardships. He tells the story of how basketball showed him the way out of family chaos. Later, as a law student and member of the Massachusetts National Guard, he was picked as Cosmopolitan’s “America’s Sexiest Man” and vaulted into the glamorous world of New York modeling. But the man who was once ushered into the backrooms of Studio 54 returned to Massachusetts to raise a family, and soon found an unlikely path that would lead him to national political stardom. Poignant, heartfelt, humorous, and profound—including details from the unprecedented Senate race and victory that captured the country’s imagination—this is the story of one man’s dream and determination to fight for a better future.

Those who avidly followed the on-court acrobatics and off-court celebrity of the “Dream Team” in Barcelona in 1992 would hardly recognize what passed as Olympic basketball fifty-six years earlier, when the United States first played the game in the 1936 Olympics. In those early days of men’s Olympic basketball, many teams lacked basic skills, games were played in the pouring rain, only seven players could suit up, and the rules allowed only two substitutions and no time-outs. How this slow, low-scoring sport became the breakneck game that enraptures millions worldwide is the story of American Hoops. In this fascinating history of Olympic basketball on the world stage and behind the scenes, Carson Cunningham presents a kaleidoscopic picture of the evolution into the twenty-first century of one of America’s most popular sports. From clashes between celebrated egos and thrilling action on the court to the intense rivalries of the cold war and technological advances in everything from television to off-court sports equipment, American Hoops follows the fortunes of Olympic basketball in the United States and internationally as it developed and emerged as one of the most challenging and entertaining sports in the world.Cunningham traces how the modifications made by the International Olympic Committee and the International Basketball Federation have transformed the game of basketball over the years, from the Berlin to the Beijing Olympics. His book offers a remarkable view of the changing world through the prism of Olympic sport.

An American Voter: My Love Affair with Presidential Politics

$11.99

A warm, affecting, and ultimately hopeful tale of what it means to care about politics in today’s world. When Joan Sullivan was sixteen, her sister got married on their sprawling farm in New Jersey. Bill Bradley, the senator and former NBA player, was among the guests. Suddenly, magically, Joan found herself on the basketball court with him. An athlete herself, awed by his dedication to both sports and politics, she slipped off her shoes, bunched up her bridesmaid dress, and tried not to smile too brightly when he took her as a partner. Nine years later, Joan is in Des Moines, Iowa, working feverishly for Bill Bradley’s presidential campaign. Haunted by the death of her father and feeling disconnected from her life in New York, Joan throws herself into this strange new world, intent on getting a political education. In a whirlwind tour of the U.S., Joan campaigns for Bradley, taking to heart his message that idealism and dreams are not dead in America. But Joan is not immune to the perils of politics. In one embarrassing moment, she resorts to a shoving match with a Gore supporter in the streets of Brooklyn. But through her experiences, Joan discovers some larger truths: that defeat does not necessarily mean failure; that although Bradley will ultimately lose the campaign, she and others can continue to work for change; and that voting is more than participating in politics; it is a personal and powerful way to participate in life.

Excerpt: The Old Oquirrh Bucket (named after the Oquirrh Mountains to the west of Salt Lake City) is the symbol of in-state basketball supremacy in Utah. Every year since 1974 the trophy has been awarded to the in-state college team (Utah State, Utah, Southern Utah, BYU, UVU, and Weber State) which has the best win-loss record against in-state competition. In 1974, a proposal was presented to create a trophy a symbol to be awarded annually to Utah’s best college basketball team. The concept was accepted and for the first two years the in-state title was awarded to the Aggies, although no actual trophy had been determined. In 1977, after Weber State won the title for the first time, an Ogden businessman located a pioneer bucket at a local auction, complete with a history of how it had been found. It has since become the traveling trophy emblematic of Utah college basketball supremacy. The plaque on the bucket includes a map with the names and locations of the 4 original schools (BYU, U of U, USU, and WSC). SUU and UVU did not field Division-I basketball programs at the time the trophy was created, but have since become NCAA Division-I programs. The plaque includes the caption “The Oquirrh Bucket Utah State Collegiate Champ Basketball”. Utah has won the bucket 14 times, followed by Utah State and BYU with 9 victories, and Weber State with 4. … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3007311

Excerpt: John Young Brown, Jr. (born December 28, 1933) is a politician, entrepreneur, and businessman from the U.S. state of Kentucky. He served as the 59th governor of Kentucky from 1979 to 1983, although he may be best-known for building Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) into a multi-million dollar restaurant chain. Currently single, he has been married three times, the second time to former Miss America Phyllis George. Among his children are news anchor Pamela Ashley Brown and former Kentucky Secretary of State John Y. Brown, III. The son of a U.S. congressman, Brown’s talent for business became evident in college, where he made a substantial amount of money selling Encyclopedia Britannica sets. After briefly practicing law with his father, he purchased Kentucky Fried Chicken from founder Harland Sanders in 1964. Brown turned the company into a world-wide success, and sold his interest in the company for a huge profit in 1971. He then invested in several other restaurant ventures, but none matched the success of KFC. During the 1970s, he also owned, at various times, three professional basketball teams the American Basketball Association’s Kentucky Colonels, and the National Basketball Association’s Buffalo Braves and Boston Celtics. Despite showing little inclination toward politics, Brown surprised political observers by declaring his candidacy for governor in 1979. A strong media campaign funded by his personal fortune allowed him to win the Democratic primary and go on to defeat former Republican governor Louie B. Nunn in the general election. Brown delivered on his campaign promise to run the state government like a business, which enabled him to guide the state through difficult economic times without raising taxes. Because he o… More:

Building Leaders the West Point Way: Ten Principles from the Nation’s Most Powerful Leadership Lab

$4.81

Major General Joseph P. Franklin (ret.) believes almost everything that he is as an adult can be traced back to his days at West Point, where he was not only a cadet but an instructor, football coach, and eventually Commandant of Cadets. U.S. Military Academy graduates are found at the highest levels in every walk of life: military, education, business, medicine, law, and government. “But,” says Franklin, “you don’t have to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy to embrace its ideals or to benefit from the wisdom that is taught there. Competent, even inspiring, leadership is within the grasp of nearly everyone.” The principles of leadership-including Duty, Honor, Faith, Courage, Perseverance, Confidence, Approachability, Adaptability, Compassion, and Vision-can be internalized and polished to one’s own level of expertise and ambition.”I have known Joe Franklin, since the late 1970s, when I coached at West Point and he was the Commandant of Cadets. General Joe is well-known by the many people whose lives he has touched as a truly thoughtful, approachable, and compassionate human being. He has written a very readable book using examples drawn from his personal experience to illustrate key principles of leadership, a subject I have studied and practiced for most of my adult life. His simple, honest, easy to understand text is a welcome addition to the references available to leaders, young and old alike. This book will definitely help you become a better leader. The General is one of the best ever!” – Mike “Coach K” Kryzewski, Duke University Basketball Coach

Excerpt: Carmelita Jeter (pronounced ; born November 24, 1979) is an American sprinter who specializes in the 100 meters. After a successful collegiate track career, a hamstring injury hampered much of Jeter’s early professional career. She came to prominence in 2007, winning the 100 m bronze at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics and a gold at the World Athletics Final. She failed to make the American squad for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and began training with John Smith to improve her performance. The following year she won a second World Championship bronze. However, greater performances followed, winning her second gold of the World Athletics Final in 10.67 seconds and winning the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix in 10.64 seconds after that. This made her the second fastest woman ever in the 100 m, beating Marion Jones’s best and bringing her closer to Florence Griffith-Joyner’s long standing world record. Jeter attended Bishop Montgomery High School. Initially, basketball was the preferred sport in her family, and her brother (Pooh Jeter) later joined the Sacramento Kings. Her basketball coach suggested that she try out track, and a 11.7 second run confirmed her natural talent for sprinting. Jeter set the record for most NCAA medals by a California State University, Dominguez Hills track athlete and became the University’s first U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier. A recurring hamstring problem kept her out of competition for much of 200305, and it wasn’t until 2007 that she made her first impact in senior track and field athletics, having undergone treatment with deep tissue massage. Reinsdorf (born February 25, 1936) is a C.P.A., lawyer and an owner of the MLB’s Chicago White Sox and the NBA’s Chicago Bulls. He started his professional life as a tax attorney with the Internal Revenue Service. He has been the head of the White Sox and Bulls for over 20 years, with a reputation for frugality. He made his initial fortune in real estate, taking advantage of the Frank Lyon Co. v. United States decision by the United States Supreme Court which allowed economic owners of realty to sell property and lease it back, while transferring the tax deduction for depreciation to the title owner. As the owner and Chairman of the Chicago Bulls since 1985, he has turned the franchise into a lucrative business that won six NBA Championships in the 1990s (19911993 and 19961998). He is controversial for his involvement (along with Jerry Krause) in breaking up the championship team by not hiring back key personnel such as Phil Jackson and Michael Jordan. He hired Jordan as a baseball player during his sabbatical from basketball. He also moved the Bulls from Chicago Stadium to the United Center. As a baseball owner since 1981, he has brought success to the White Sox franchise. The franchise made the playoffs in 1983 for the first time since 1959 and won the World Series in 2005 for the first time since 1917. He moved the White Sox from Comiskey Park to New Comiskey Park and then renaming the new park U.S. Cellular Field. In both sporting endeavors, he has developed a reputation as an anti-labor union hardliner. Since the early 1990s, he has been considered one of the most, if not the most, influential baseball owners. He has been influential in instituting the salary cap and revenue sharing. He has also shaped the modern era of basebal… More:

Fitch’s teams twice qualified for the NCAA tournament. Fitch was a U.S. Marine Corps drill instructor , a fact that Larry Bird credited in his book Drive: The Story of My Life as an important reason for Bird’s own strong work ethic. During his 25-year pro coaching career Fitch repeatedly was hired in an attempt to improve failing teams. As of 2004 Fitch ranked fifth among all NBA coaches in all-time number of victories (with 944) but also ranked second in all-time losses (with 1,106) behind Lenny Wilkens . He was awarded as the NBA’s Coach of the Year Award twice and he guided Bird, Kevin McHale , Robert Parish and the rest of the Boston Celtics to the 1981 NBA championship, defeating the Houston Rockets 4 games to 2 in the finals. Game On: The All-American Race to Make Champions of Our Children

$0.25

A first-of-its-kind investigative book on the least examined and most important topic in sports today. Youth sports isn’t just orange slices and all-star trophies anymore. It’s 14-year-olds who enter high school with a decade of football experience, 9-year-olds competing for national baseball championships, 5-year-old golfers who shoot par, and toddlers made from sperm donated (for a fee) by elite college athletes. It’s a year-round "travel team" in every community–and parents who fear that not making the cut in grade school will cost their kid the chance to play in high school. In short, a landscape in which performance often matters more than participation, all the way down to peewee basketball.Much as Fast Food Nation challenged our eating habits and Silent Spring rewired how we think about the environment, Tom Farrey’s Game On will forever change the way we look at this desperate culture besotted by the example of Tiger Woods. An Emmy award-winning reporter, Farrey examines the lives of child athletes and the consequences of sorting the strong from the weak at ever earlier ages: fewer active kids, testier sidelines, rising obesity rates, and U.S. national teams that rarely win world titles. He dives into the world of these games that are played by more than 30 million boys and girls, and along the way uncovers some surprising truths. When the very best athletes enter organized play. The best approach to coaching them. And the powerful influence of wealth and genetics. Farrey has written a surprising, alarming, thoughtful, and ultimately empowering book for anyone who wants the best for the newest generation of Americans, as athletes and citizens.

Kalif Brown is an inspiring basketball star, who has what it takes to make it to the NBA. He’s a high school senior with big dreams. But his off the court lifestyle of drugs and guns, may land him in jail or dead. Growing up in a drug infested neighborhood filled with junkies, and criminals, doesn’t make his situation any better. And like most young black men and women he’s living in a single parent home with his mother. He doesn’t have a father figure; therefore he turns to a local dealer to fill that image of a father. Kalif must make a choice. Will it be “Hustling or Hooping”? And he must make this decision fast because his dreams and life may depend on it. Many young inner city athletes and those not into sports, deal with the pressures of everyday life. And many find it hard to deal with especially if they don’t have anyone to talk to. Hustling or Hooping may be a fictional book, but there is a Kalif Brown in every urban city in the U.S. Many young black men grow up fatherless, and turn to the streets for a family. The out come is usually negative. But many do make it out of their situations. This book is highly recommended for any young man, or woman who is growing up in a negative environment, and feels as though he or she cannot make that change for the good. This book can be a tool, to make that negative situation a positive one. But also this book reveals the consequences of not making that change for the better.

As classified by the United States Census Bureau, Kentucky is a Southern state. Kentucky is one of four U.S. states constituted as a commonwealth (the others being Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts). Originally a part of Virginia, in 1792 it became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky is the 37th largest state in terms of total area, the 36th largest in land area, and ranks 26th in population. Kentucky is known as the “Bluegrass State”, a nickname based on the fact that native bluegrass is present in many of the pastures throughout the state, based on the fertile soil. It made possible the breeding of high-quality livestock, especially thoroughbred racing horses. It is a land with diverse environments and abundant resources, including the world’s longest cave system, Mammoth Cave National Park; the greatest length of navigable waterways and streams in the Lower 48 states; and the two largest man-made lakes east of the Mississippi River. It is also home to the highest per capita number of deer and turkey in the United States, the largest free-ranging elk herd east of Montana, and the nation’s most productive coalfield. Like many other communities along the 824-mile Historic National Road, Knightstown owes its existence to the paving of this remarkable roadway. When it became evident that the new road would cut across his Henry County, Indiana, farm, early settler Waitstill Munson Cary hired national road surveyor Jonathan Knight in 1827 to plat the tiny town and then named the community after Knight. Over the years, Knightstown’s prosperity in many ways has paralleled the ups and downs of travel and transportation along the Historic National Road, also known as U.S. Highway 40. This collection of vintage images traces Knightstown’s journey from a settlement on the west bank of the Big Blue River to a close-knit community bound by family and priding itself on a history of education, architecture, and of course, Hoosier basketball.

Excerpt: Dr. Laurie Davidson Cox (August 18, 1883October 1, 1968) was a leading landscape architect of his time and hall of fame lacrosse coach and contributor to the sport. He was professor of Landscape Engineering at Syracuse University, where he established the school’s lacrosse program, and later became the President of New England College. Born in Londonderry, Nova Scotia, Cox attended high school at Bellows Falls High School in Vermont. Following high school, he attended Acadia University where he would receive a degree in 1903. Cox then attended Harvard University where he graduated magna cum laude in 1908 with a Landscape Architecture degree. While at Harvard, Cox played lacrosse, basketball and ice hockey. On September 7, 1910, Cox married Gretchen Smith. Cox was one of the leading landscape architects in the country. Following Harvard, Cox worked for four years with the Los Angeles Parks Department. While working with the Los Angeles Parks Department he designed the exterior landscape of both the Lincoln Park and Griffith Park, and called for a city parkway that would “add to the health and happiness of its citizens.” His plan was only partially implemented. In 1915, Cox, funded by John D. Rockefeller, performed the first census of trees in New York City. In his report, A Street Tree System for New York City, Borough of Manhattan, Cox found that most street trees in Manhattan to be in bad condition. Part of his recommendation was to plant 200 trees per square mile on the island. Cox advocated for a new kind of park in the U.S. National Park system that balanced the need for recreation and preservation. In 1934, Cox surveyed Vermont’s Green Mountains in order to create a National Park in the State. Cox’s vision of the Green Mountain Parkway… More:

Mo: The Life and Times of Morris K. Udall

$17.95

Everybody liked Mo. Throughout his political life— and especially during his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976— thousands of people were drawn to Arizona congressman Morris K. Udall by his humor, humanity, and courage. This biography traces the remarkable career of the candidate who was “too funny to be president” and introduces readers to Mo the politician, Mo the environmentalist, and Mo the man. Journalists Donald Carson and James Johnson interviewed more than one hundred of Udall’s associates and family members to create an unusually rich portrait. They recall Udall’s Mormon boyhood in Arizona when he lost an eye at age six, his service during World War II, his brief career in professional basketball, and his work as a lawyer and county prosecutor, which earned him a reputation for fairness and openness. Mo provides the most complete record of Udall’s thirty-year congressional career ever published. It reveals how he challenged the House seniority system and turned the House Interior Committee into a powerful panel that did as much to protect the environment as any organization in the twentieth century. It shows Udall to have been a consensus builder for environmental issues who paved the way for the Alaska Lands Act of 1980, helped set aside 2.4 million acres of wilderness in Arizona, and fought for the Central Arizona Project, one of the most ambitious water projects in U.S. history. Carson and Johnson record Udall’s early opposition to the Vietnam War at a time when that conflict was largely perceived as a just cause, as well as his early advocacy of campaign finance reform. They also provide a behind-the-scenes account of his run for the presidency— the first House member to seek the office in nearly a century— which gained him an intensely loyal national following. Mo explores the paradoxes that beset Udall: He was a man able to accomplish things politically because people genuinely liked and

The Lady Vols started off the season ranked number one in the nation, a ranking that would not change. ESPN called it one of the top ten moments in women’s sports of the 20th century. After the season, Summitt authored a book about the season, entitled “Raise the Roof”. Preseason The Lady Vols had just come off of a somewhat bittersweet season. While they had won the national championship, they had lost ten games, including two to rival Louisiana Tech . That team was the first Lady Vols team since 1991 that did not win either the SEC regular season or tournament championship. However, the team did return several players, including All-American Chamique Holdsclaw , and had a freshman class that was being called the greatest ever, which included Tamika Catchings , Semeka Randall , Teresa Geter, and Kristen Clement. Before entering the professional ranks he coached college ball at the University of Minnesota , Bowling Green State University , the University of North Dakota , and his alma mater, Coe College . From Boston, Fitch went on to coach the Rockets where he led a team featuring Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson to the 1986 NBA Finals where they were defeated once again by Bird’s Celtics, 4 games to 2, for the NBA championship. Fitch also coached the Cleveland Cavaliers , New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Clippers . During his first year with the Cavaliers, the team lost its first 15 games. What would it be like to have a president who could Twitter, send text messages, and navigate the web with ease? What would it be like to receive a text message from inside the Oval Office and, most importantly, what would it say? Now, for the first time, We The People are privy to our new leader’s epistolary back-and-forths on his wily hand-held device. We’re about to discover that his emails (and the replies, from his wife and daughters, Biden, Palen, Rush, Hannity, the new first puppy, and even Bush) are so tuned in to the language of electronic correspondence they come hilariously close to the brink of legibility. This giftable, imagined glimpse into Obama’s beloved Blackberry traverses the mundane and momentous contours of the Commander in Chief’s life, from security briefings to spam, basketball practice to domestic bliss, and the panic of oops-I-hit-reply-all, to, of course, the trauma of dealing with the First Mother In Law.To wit:BidenMyTime: Hey U, whatcha doin?BARACKO: M rly busy BidenMyTime: Right :( Can I lv at 4:45?
