The local Roller Skating Rink is definitely not your cup of tea. Let’s explore some of the types of skating that you might find a bit challenging.

Start off with the most commonly known type of Aggressive Roller Skating, Roller Derby. Roller Derby is a type of formation skating and is usually performed on an oval track. The track can be either banked or flat. This is an American invented contact sport performed normally using the quad type of Roller Skate.

Roller Derby has spread to Australia, United Kingdom, and many other countries. Currently there are approximately 500 Women Leagues in 16 Countries. This has normally been a favorite sport of women, it is evolving to become a male, co-ed and even junior sport. The United States sports 100 Amateur Leagues and 3 Professional Leagues.

The Roller Derby sport does have governing sets of rules depending on what league you are associated with. The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), rules are the most commonly used set. These rules detail scoring, legal and illegal contact and the procedure for dealing with the illegal contact. These rules also cover egregious forms of contact, fighting and attempts at fighting, violations can lead to expulsion and/or suspension of a player or players.

Roller Derby has some mixed Gender leagues that are profit type leagues with teams established for the purpose of competing as public entertainment. This type of Roller Derby is fast paced and filled with action.

Renegade Rollergirls broke away from the structured leagues and started their own league in Phoenix Arizona. These girls play a fast paced, no penalties, and no Referees type of Derby that really highlights the Skaters skills. Their Motto is; “Any Surface, Any Time and will play Any Team on concrete, wood, banked, sport court or even in the middle of the street”.

Another Sport Option, Roller Skating Hockey is available. This sport has Professional Roller Hockey Leagues with both Men and Women Teams. It is Professionally played in both the USA and Europe. The games are televised; Roller Hockey Nef @ Sports TV. Roller Hockey also has Recreational and Youth Roller Hockey Leagues established.

Roller Hockey is also governed by rules. USA Hockey In-Line playing rules, Street Hockey Rules and Regulations, International Rules, even rules for the Youth and recreation. Note that there are different sets of rules for Quad Roller Skates and IN-Line, (Roller Blade), types of Skates.

Still need something different? Roller Basketball has Leagues in the US and at least five other countries. Roller Basketball is performed on both quad and /or in-line skates. Roller Basketball also has World Championships. Another Sport with World Championships is Roller Soccer, it is played on In-Line Roller Skates and the International Federation is located in San Francisco, California, USA.

How about Roller Cricket? A Sport that mixes the skills and popularity of cricket with quick dashes and sharp turns that the Roller Skates provide.

Roller Skating, in any form is a Sport. These are some team type Roller Skating sport options. In future articles I will be discussing some sports and competitions for the Individual Roller Skaters.

Going Straight for The Aggressive style of skating can be fun and even rewarding. If I was a bit younger, I would look for a great pair of roller blades or quad verticle skating and start preparing myself for the possibility of competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
