Pontiac Silverdome sells for less than 600K
If you’re looking for cheap real estate, you could get a sports arena for a discount these days too!
The Pontiac Silverdome sold for $ 583,000 at auction, a jaw droppingly low price. Discount doesn’t do the sale price justice – that’s a sports arena for the cost of 2 medium range homes. With that low a price, mortgage loan modification may never be needed. The name of the winning bidders haven’t been announced yet, but it’s a Canadian real estate firm based out of Toronto. They had the best bid, but the sale hasn’t been entirely finalized. According to an article from the Detroit Free Press, it was costing the city of Pontiac about three times that much just to maintain the place per year, and the Detroit area isn’t exactly the land of milk and honey lately.
The former loud and proud home of Detroit Sports
A local college professor and high school sports star, C. Don Davidson was the figurative Howard Roark behind the whole thing. Having grown up around Detroit, he was dismayed to see how Pontiac had declined upon his return in 1965. He came up with an idea for a new home for the Detroit Lions. The University of Detroit hired him as an architecture professor in 1966. (Some previous work of Davidson’s was on the Jacksonville International Airport, and he held a Masters in Urban Planning and Architecture.) The sports stadium was part of an urban renewal project for the city of Pontiac. To get the Lions interested in moving to Pontiac, he started talks with William Clay Ford. After Pontiac was approved for a stadium in 1970, the architect design firm O’Dell, Hewlett and Luckenbach hired Davidson as Chief Project Designer. The project was complete in 1975, and the new home for the Lions cost just under $ 56 million to build. They left Tiger Stadium in 1975, having shared Tiger Stadium with the Detroit Tigers for some time, which was common place in those days.
Why call it the “Silverdome?”
The top of the stadium was made of fiberglass coated with Teflon, which is white to the naked eye, but silver with reflection from the sun. The roof was supported entirely by air pressure inside the stadium.
From the ’70s until recently
In 1978, the Detroit Pistons moved in, and shared the building with the Lions until 1988. It’s still one of the largest stadiums in the USA, seating up to 80,000 for football, a capacity over 90,000, and was one of the loudest venues for visiting teams (The largest NFL stadium is Cowboy Stadium, followed by Fed Ex Field.) The Lions moved from the Silverdome in 2002, to the new Ford Field. It sat empty since then, though from 03 to 06, the parking lot was used as a drive in cinema.
The Present
The Silverdome has been host to many events, including WrestleMania III, the sporting event with the largest attendance ever (the record still stands). It’s also a legendary concert venue – you name the huge band, chances are they’ve already been there twice. The city of Pontiac decided to put it on the auction block, where it went in October 2009. Major League Soccer is what the new owners are said to be dedicating the stadium for. Granted, they paid more than a payday loans, but they got an incredible deal.

Excerpt: The approach to offense in American and Canadian football has splintered and evolved in the 100 years in which the modern form of the sport has existed. Many philosophies exist about deploying a team’s 11 players. A smash mouth offense is the more traditional style of offense. It often results in a higher time of possession by running the ball heavily. So-called “smash-mouth football” is often run out of the I-formation or wishbone, with tight ends and receivers used as blockers. Though the offense is run-oriented, pass opportunities can develop as defenses play close to the line. Play-action can be very effective for a run-oriented team. Used to describe the run-heavy offenses such as run by Woody Hayes of Ohio State University in the 1950s and 1960s. A quarterback under Hayes would often throw fewer than 10 passes a game. Hayes is credited as saying “Three things can happen when you pass the ball, and two of them are bad”. This is a grind-it-out ball control offense that relies on time of possession and high percentage inside running off of handoffs to advance the ball down the field. Hayes relied primarily on the fullback off-tackle play. The basic running philosophy employed by the Green Bay Packers under coach Vince Lombardi. The central two plays in this philosophy are off-tackle run and the so-… More: |

Arena Football $49 Arena Football is a variety of Gridiron football. It is a proprietary game played indoors on a smaller field than American or Canadian outdoor football, resulting in a faster and higher-scoring game. The sport was invented in 1981, and patented in 1987, by James F. Foster, Jr., a former executive of the National Football League and the United States Football League. Though not the only variant of indoor football, it is the most widely known, and the one on which most other forms of modern indoor football are at least partially based. Two leagues have played under the official arena football rules: the Arena Football League, which played 22 seasons from 1987 through 2009 and arenafootball2, which was founded in 2000. Arena Football 1, is the league’s new name, confederation of former AFL and af2 teams that plans to begin play in 2010, will also presumably follow the official arena football rulebook. |

Bradley grew up in Sunderland, England where he turned professional with the local Sunderland club at age sixteen. However, his career nearly ended just as it was beginning. During a training session, he shattered his right kneecap kicking a ball and it took over two years before he was fit to play again. In 1950, English conscription laws forced Bradley to choose between working in the government coal mines or entering the military when he turned nineteen. Bradley chose to work in the coal mines at Easington Colliery. In addition to working in the mine, Bradley continued to play football. While he began his career as a forward with Sunderland, the injury slowed Bradley and he moved into defense. Bradley signed with Bradford Park Avenue in 1955 then in 1957, he moved to Carlisle United where he eventually played 130 games, scoring 3 goals. In 1963, Bradley receive… More: |

Canadian Football $14.14 Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Canadian football is a form of gridiron football played almost exclusively in Canada in which two teams of 12 players each compete for territorial control of a field of play 110 yards (101 m) long and 65 yards (59 m) wide attempting to advance a pointed prolate spheroid ball into the opposing team’s scoring area (end zone). In Canada, the term football usually refers to Canadian football and American football collectively, or either sport specifically, depending on the context. The two sports have shared origins and are closely related, but with significant differences. Rugby football in Canada had its origins in the early 1860s, and over time, the unique game known as Canadian football developed. Both the Canadian Football League (CFL), the sport’s top professional league, and Football Canada, the governing body for amateur play, trace their roots to 1884 and the founding of the Canadian Rugby Football Union. Currently active teams such as the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats have similar longevity. The CFL is the most popular and only major professional Canadian football league. Its championship game, the Grey Cup, is the country’s single largest sporting event and is watched by nearly half of Canada’s population. Canadian football is also played at the high school, junior, collegiate, and semi-professional levels: the Canadian Junior Football League and Quebec Junior Football League are leagues for players aged 18-22, many post-secondary institutions compete in Canadian Interuniversity Sport for the Vanier Cup, and senior leagues such as the Alberta Football League have grown in popularity in recent years. Great achievements in Canadian football are enshrined in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Other organizations across Canada perform senior league Canadian football during the summer. The first documented gridiron football match was a game played at University |

Canadian Soccer League (1987-1992) $48.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The original Canadian Soccer League was a semi-professional football that was operated in Canada during the summer from 1987 and 1992. It was a nationwide league as it included franchises from all parts of the country. The CSL was formed in the aftermath of Canada’s participation in the 1986 World Cup finals tournament held in Mexico. Canada was an oddity as a country whose association was able to qualify a team despite not having a domestic professional league, or even a domestically based professional team with the demise in 1984 of the North American Soccer League. Founding league commissioner Dale Barnes voiced sentiment aptly when he said the league is to “bring our players home.” The league gained a leap in creditibility when an agreement was reached with The Sports Network to broadcast a CSL Game of the Week, allowing a nationwide audience view a game on domestic cable TV each Sunday evening. Broadcasts featured play-by-play commentator Vic Rauter and analyst Graham Leggat. The league received sponsorship from Air Canada, Foster’s Lager, Hyundai, and Gatorade. |

York Region Shooters $44.99 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! York Region Shooters are a Canadian soccer team, founded in 1998. The team is a member of the Canadian Soccer League, the top tier soccer league in Canada, and play in the International Division. The team first entered the league as Glen Shields in 1998, but changed their name to the Glen Shields Sun Devils the following year. They changed their name again, this time to the Vaughan Sun Devils in 2002, and then after merging with the York Region Shooters in 2003, became the Vaughan Shooters prior to the 2004 season. With the creation of the new International Division, and to celebrate the club’s strong Italian heritage, the club changed its name yet again, becoming the Italia Shooters in 2006 until 2010 when it changed to York Region Shooters. The Shooters currently play their home games at the St. Joan of Arc Turf Field in the city of Maple, Ontario, around 12 miles north-east of downtown Toronto. The team’s colors are blue and white, mirroring those of the Italian national football team. |
