Hockey Puck Ice Melt

Has anyone used those salt ‘pucks’ on the roof of their house?
to melt off the snow?
Evidentially they now sell pucks or cakes of salt in the shape of a hockey puck, that you just throw up on your roof to melt the snow off.
Are they effective?
It would seem to me that they would melt the snow in the area surrounding them only, and cause a stream of water down the slope from them, but not much more than that. Unless of course you located them a few inches apart across the width of the roof.
Am I wrong? Or do they actually work to clear the snow and ice for many feet surrounding themselves?
Yes they really do work. It’s amazing how the ice and snow melts in big areas along the edge to keep the damns from happening. Wisconsin native… ps. that’s why they Make these.
How does a hockey puck slide so fast?
