Excerpt: 1929 30 Boston Bruins The 1929 30 Boston Bruins season was the Bruins’ sixth season in the NHL . In defending its American Division title for the second straight season, the Bruins took advantage of new rules and its powerhouse lineup to record the best single season winning percentage in NHL history – a record which still stands. However, the club failed to defend its Stanley Cup title, losing in the finals to the Montreal Canadiens . Regular season 1929 30 NHL season To combat low scoring – the previous season had the fewest goals per game recorded before or thereafter – a major rule change was implemented. Players were now allowed forward passing in the offensive zone , instead of only in the defensive and neutral zones. This led to abuse: players sat in front of the opposing net waiting for a pass, and goals scored nearly tripled league-wide. The rule was changed again mid-season in December 1929, and players were no longer allowed to enter the offensive zone before the puck, thus giving

$44.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 1997-98 NHL season was the 81st regular season of the National Hockey League. Twenty-six teams each played 82 games. The Stanley Cup winners were the Detroit Red Wings, who swept the Washington Capitals in four games. This was the first season for the Carolina Hurricanes, who were previously known as the Hartford Whalers. The Hurricanes played their home games at the Greensboro Coliseum. They would remain in the Northeast Division. This was the first season for Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff, who as of the 2009-10 season is the longest-tenured NHL coach. The controversial “FoxTrax” puck system was last used this season as well. In August 1998, the NHL signed a five-year, $600 million rights agreement with ABC Sports/ESPN. FOX elected not to use the system in the subsequent “lame duck” season.

Excerpt: Clint Malarchuk (born May 1, 1961 in Grande Prairie, Alberta), is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1981 and 1992, and the current goaltending coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Aside from his career, he is known for sustaining a life-threatening injury during a game when another player’s skate blade slashed his interior carotid artery. He played for the Portland Winter Hawks, Quebec Nordiques, Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres in the course of his career. Malarchuk compiled a career record of 141 wins, 130 losses, 45 ties, 12 shutouts, and an .885 save percentage. The infamous moment that Malarchuk is perhaps most known for occurred during a game on March 22, 1989, between the visiting St. Louis Blues and Malarchuk’s Buffalo Sabres. When Steve Tuttle of the Blues and Uwe Krupp of the Sabres became entangled while chasing the puck and crashed into Malarchuk’s goal, Tuttle’s skate caught Malarchuk on the neck, severing his interior carotid artery. With pools of blood collecting on the ice, Malarchuk left the ice on his own feet with the assistance of his team’s athletic trainer, Jim Pizzutelli. Many spectators were physically sickened by the sight. Local television cameras covering the game cut away from the sight of Malarchuk bleeding after realizing what had happened. Malarchuk, meanwhile, believed he was going to die. “All I wanted to do was get off the ice”, said Malarchuk. “My mother was watching the game on TV, and I didn’t want her to see me die.” Aware that his mother had been watching the game on TV, he had an equipment manager call and tell her he loved her. Then he asked for a priest. Malarchuk’s life was saved by Pizzutelli, a former army medic who had… More:

Getting It Right the First Time: How Innovative Companies Anticipate Demand

Getting It Right the First Time: How Innovative Companies Anticipate Demand

$37

There is no doubt that the pace of business has accelerated – products go from concept to release faster than ever, business partnerships and alliances are established (and dissolved) more quickly, competitors react more swiftly to any tilt in the playing field. Whether your business is microprocessors or airplane manufacturing, it will live or die by the degree to which you can anticipate demand for your products and services. In Getting It Right the First Time, John Katsaros and Peter Christy argue that the most successful businesses will be those that accurately predict market conditions – especially the market changes that will occur within the crucial 18-to-36-month innovation window. Or, to paraphrase hockey superstar Wayne Gretzky: skate to where the puck is going to be, not to where it is.Showcasing dozens of colorful examples of lucrative successes and missed opportunities (from high-tech to financial services to medical devices), the authors present a detailed plan for how you and your company can learn to: identify your top customers in advance of entering the market, successfully position your company and its products to those customers, and catch emerging trends before your competitors do. Eschewing traditional market research techniques – such as focus groups, polls, and surveys – Katsaros and Christy demonstrate how expert interviews with potential early adopters can help identify your killer app – the function that customers most value – and avoid costly trial-and-error. In a viciously competitive world where your company may have only one chance to score big, Getting It Right the First Time provides essential guidance for entrepreneurs, marketers, product developers, and business strategists, and offers new insight into the dynamics of innovation.

Excerpt: The Hockey Club Lugano was founded in the course of the 1940/1941 season when, on the small lake of Muzzano, the first games were played against the “cousins” of Ambrì and against the improvised teams of Muzzano, Massagno and Paradiso. But the club’s actual setting-up takes place on 11 February 1941, during a meeting in the small lounge of the Apollo restaurant. Among the founding partners there are Antonio Caslani, the Arrigo brothers, Ivo Badaracco, Bruno Soldini, Dino Bernardoni, Ivo Molina, Renato Crivelli, Guido Keller, Tullio Visani, Pepi Paulon, Livio Balmelli, Renato Paganetti, Kurt Tritten, Ezio Bernasconi, Bobo Trachsel and Alfonso Weber. The last-named is elected president, also because, being a player in the Football Club Lugano, he can guarantee the jerseys for the team. Seven years after its foundation, the team abandons the small lake of Muzzano and goes to the Loreto quarter. This change is certainly beneficial and is a good opportunity to make the hockey game gradually known in the neighbourhood. In Loreto, the first real games of puck on ice are played, with the appearance of those who will become world champions: the Canadians of Mercury. The game of hockey starts getting a footing; however, the civic authorities keep considering Lugano as, basically, a football city. All the efforts of the president-of-presidents Luigi Bellasi come to nothing. In fact, the lack of political support causes the club’s eviction from Loreto, too. In 1955, after loads of ups and downs, the Lugano club plays a few games on what functioned as tennis courts in summer, i.e. the tennis courts of the Münger bakery in Paradiso. This was possible thanks to two great promoters of the black-and-white family: Cuccio Viglezio and Guido Keller. Still in t… More:

Chapters: Penalty, Tie, Goal, Plus-Minus, Shot on Goal, Point, Assist, Goals Against Average, Shot Quality, List of Top Goal Scorers in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, Save Percentage. Excerpt: In ice hockey , an assist is attributed to up to two players of the scoring team who shot, passed or deflected the puck towards the scoring teammate, or touched it in any other way which enabled the goal , meaning that they were “assisting” in the goal. There can be a maximum of two assists per goal. The assists will be awarded in the order of play, with the last player to pass the puck to the goal scorer getting the primary assist and the player who passed it to the primary assister getting the secondary assist. If a player scores off of a rebound given up by a goaltender , assists are still awarded, as long as there is no re-possession by that goaltender, meaning he or she did not have complete control of the puck.If a player passes the puck to another player who then completes a give-and-go with a different player for a goal, the player who made the pass that set up the goal gets a primary assist, while the player who passed to the eventual goal scorer before the give-and-go took place gets the secondary assist. If a team has possession and then loses possession to a player who then scores, there are no assists on the goal and therefore the goal is counted as “unassisted”.Players who gain an assist will get one point added to their player statistics. Players’ assist totals and goal totals make up their point totals.See also (online edition) Websites (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Goals against average (GAA ) is a statistic used in ice hockey , water polo , lacrosse , and soccer that is the mean of goals allowed per game by a goaltender . The inspiring story of an ordinary man who, from humble beginnings and against the odds of a devastating illness, has led—is leading—an extraordinary life.To many people, Walter Gretzky is the ultimate dad, the father of the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, and the first inspired coach to a talented young boy. Walter’s major insight into hockey—that a player should “go where the puck is going”—guided Wayne’s brilliant style, and Wayne himself has said about his talent: “It’s God-given. It’s Wally-given.” It’s safe to say that no other famous hockey player’s father is held in such high esteem, and that Walter Gretzky has carved out this singular niche in his own right. Now, for the first time, Walter tells at length the story of his life, about growing up on a small family farm, about meeting and marrying Phyllis, about raising four boys and a girl in a modest home in Brantford on the salary of a telephone repairman, about hanging onto his modesty and values when the comet of talent and celebrity hit.Walter also talks about the process of recovering from a stroke that came close to killing him ten years ago. Through his own grit and determination, and with the help of dedicated therapists and doctors, his family and friends, Walter battled back from an aneurysm that left him with many cognitive difficulties and destroyed a decade of memories—including his recollection of the death of his mother and almost all of Wayne’s NHL triumphs of the eighties. As many of the people who have encountered Walter even briefly will testify, he is very charismatic, and it’s his extraordinary compassion, which has flourished since his stroke, thatmakes him so compelling. Yes, he struggles with some limitations, but he has also discovered a calling in helping others. All of his many public speaking engagements are for charity, and this book would not exist were it not for Walter’s role as the official spokesperson for Canada’s Heart

Pathways to Agility: Mass Customization in Action

Pathways to Agility: Mass Customization in Action

$59.95

What does Wayne Gretzky, one of hockey’s premier players, have in common with the most successful manufacturing companies? The ability to anticipate the next move correctly and consistently. While Gretzky can sense where the puck is headed, top-notch manufacturers foresee where the market is headed—and prepare to change with it in order to meet the needs of their customers. In today’s business reality, agility—the ability to predict trends and establish appropriate procedures for handling them—is becoming increasingly important if manufacturers are to stand out from the crowd—and stay on top of the competition. In Pathways to Agility, John Oleson, Director of Manufacturing Technology at Dow Corning Corporation and a leading member of the Agility Forum, offers an authoritative overview of this revolutionary new approach to manufacturing. One of the first books to deliver strategies for applying agile concepts, this groundbreaking resource provides concise explanations of the fundamentals of agility and its role in mass customization, as well as practical, step-by-step guidelines for its effective implementation and smooth integration. Excerpt: Pond hockey is a form of ice hockey very similar in its object and appearance to traditional ice hockey, but far simpler and designed to be played on part of a natural frozen body of water. The rink is 50% longer than a standard NHL-specification rink, and has no “boards” or “glass” surrounding it to add to the convenience of setting up and removing the rink (usually only a barrier of snow keeps the puck in play). In addition, because there are no protective barriers behind the goal to contain high errant shots, the top of the goal is far lower, in fact only slightly taller than the width of a puck, and the goalie therefore does not require the specialized equipment that traditional ice hockey goalies must have. Because of these differences, pond hockey places more emphasis on skating and puckhandling ability and less on shooting and checking. Non-competitive pond hockey is often played with no proper goals (shoes are often used instead), rinks of almost any size and no boards at all (even snow barriers). There exists a World Pond Hockey Championship for players to aspire to. The term “pond hockey” is also often used, especially in Canada, as a synonym to Shinny. In this context it is meant to describe any form of disorganized ice hockey that is played outdoors, typically on a naturally frozen body of water. Organized outdoor hockey has been played many years before indoor rinks were popularized. Pond hockey or shinny has its origins in early Navajo Native American culture. The story of shinny came from a Navajo story where a stranger challenged a Navajo god to a game of shinny in order to free Navajo slaves. Free men and slaves lined up and an agreement was made, the terms of which was as follows. If the Navajo god won the … More:

First RHI did not play on ice as in the NHL, but a plastic tile surface known as Sport Court . Because a regulation ice hockey puck , which is 5 1/2 to 6 ounces and made of black rubber, the RHI puck was 3 1/2 ounces and made of red plastic. The game time was reduced from three 20minute periods in ice hockey, to four 12minute quarters in roller hockey . The overtime format was changed. The NHL’s format saw a maximum 5minute sudden death overtime in the regular season, and unlimited 20minute sudden death periods in the playoffs. RHI had a four-on-four shootout in both the regular season and playoffs.RHI decreased the number of players on the surface at full strength from six (five skaters and one goaltender) in the NHL, to five (four skaters and one goaltender). Thus they also reduced the minimum number of players after penalties from four to three. With fewer players on the playing surface, RHI reduced the number of players dressed for a game from 20

 Searching for Bobby Orr

Searching for Bobby Orr

$24.95

The book that hockey fans have been waiting for: the definitive, unauthorized account of the man many say was the greatest player the game has ever seen. The legend of Bobby Orr is one of the most enduring in sport. Even those who have never played the game of hockey know that the myth surrounding Canada’s great pastime originates in places like Bobby Orr’s Parry Sound. In the glory years of the Original Six – an era when the majority of NHLers were Canadian – hockey players seemed to emerge fully formed from our frozen rivers and backyard rinks, to have found the source of their genius somehow in the landscape. Like Mozart, they just appeared – Howie Morenz, Gordie Howe, Maurice Richard and Bobby Orr – spun out of the elements, prodigies, geniuses, originals, to stoke the fantasy of a nation united around a puck.Bobby Orr redefined the defensive style of hockey; there was nothing like it before him. He was the first to infuse the defenseman position with offensive juice, driving up the ice, setting up players and scoring some goals of his own. He was the first player to win three straight MVP awards, the first defenseman to score twenty or more goals in a season. His most famous goal won the Boston Bruins the Stanley Cup in 1970 – for the first time in twenty-nine years – against the St. Louis Blues in overtime. But history will also remember Bobby Orr as a key figure in the Alan Eagleson scandal, and as the unfortunate player forced into early retirement in 1978 because of his injuries. His is a story of dramatic highs and lows.In Searching for Bobby Orr, Canada’s foremost sportswriter gives us a compelling and graceful look at the life and times of Bobby Orr that is also a revealing portrait of a game and a country in transition. So Bobby Orr could skate, he could stickhandle, he could fight when he had to. He could shoot without looking at the net, without tipping a goaltender as

 Snap Shot Ice Hockey

Snap Shot Ice Hockey

$48.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A snap shot is a like an abbreviated Slapshot in ice hockey. The purpose of the snap shot is to combine the main advantages of the wrist shot. The snap shot is accomplished with a quick snap of the wrists while the puck rests in place. The difference between a snap shot and a wrist shot is that the hockey blade is accelerated towards the puck from a small distance behind it. This allows the player to flex the shaft on the ice and strike the puck at speed — although not to the degree of a full slap shot. The stick is usually not lifted higher than the knee during the shot, which makes this shot legal in most old-timer hockey leagues despite its rapid pace. Snap shots are the most common shot taken when the crease player receives the pass and decides not to one-time the puck.

Every winter, in hockey arenas across North America, as soon as the kids step onto the ice, the abuse begins. Coaches yell at the players, parents yell at the coaches, and everyone yells at the referees. After nearly a decade of coaching youngsters, Ed Arnold decided he wanted kids to learn the fundamentals of hockey but he also wanted them to have fun. He got support in this enterprise from two former NHL players, goalie Greg Millen and forward Steve Larmer. Concerned that the children’s game was being taken far too seriously by both parents and coaches, they also believed that the kids were losing the opportunity to reinvent the game for themselves. So it came about that in the winter of 2000, when the parents of the would-be Minor Novice Peterborough Petes showed up with their kids for tryouts, they were handed a letter outlining the coaches’ new philosophy. There would be no yelling at players, coaches, or referees. Players would play all positions. They would not be forced to follow a “systems” approach to hockey, but would be left to figure out what to do in a given situation for themselves. And all members of the team would be given equal ice time. Not every parent liked it, but the kids sure had a good time. Readers of this inspiring book will have a wonderful time, too, as they follow the adventures of the team.
