The complex was constructed to be readily accessible. The arena is situated at Speer Boulevard, a main thoroughfare in downtown Denver, and is served by a nearby exit off Interstate 25. A light rail station is on the western side of the complex. Ground was broken for the arena on November 20, 1997, on the 4.6-acre site. Its completion in October 1999 was marked by a Celine Dion concert. Capacity for the building is listed at 19,309 for basketball games, 18,007 for hockey and lacrosse, and 17,417 for arena football games. Also included in the complex are a basketball practice facility used by the Nuggets, and the Blue Sky Grill, a restaurant accessible from within and outside the Center itself. The atrium of the building houses a suspended sculpture depicting various hockey and basketball athletes in action poses. Before the construction of Pepsi Center, the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche played in McNichols Sports Arena, a building that has since been torn down to serve as a parking lot for nearby Invesco Field. $8.96

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Boston Blazers are an indoor lacrosse team in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). The Blazers are based in Boston, Massachusetts, and began play in the 2009 NLL season. The team is owned by Tim Armstrong, the former President of Advertising and Commerce for Google. who is currently President of AOL. NLL veteran Tom Ryan will serve as the team’s first head coach. On April 7, 2008, the Blazers named veteran New England marketing executive Doug Reffue to the position of team president. The team is not associated with the former Boston Blazers, who played in the MILL (predecessor to the NLL) from 1992 to 1997. However, the name was chosen “in part due to the popularity and nostalgia associated with the former Boston Blazers franchise”. The Blazers were originally scheduled to begin play in the 2008 NLL season. On July 31, 2007 the league held an expansion draft and the Blazers selected a number of players. In preparation for the season, the team also made a number of trades. On October 16, 2007, the NLL announced that the 2008 season had been cancelled due to the failure of the league and the Professional Lacrosse Players’ Association to reach a new collective bargaining agreement. However, the negotiations continued, and on October 25, the league announced that a new seven-year agreement had been reached, and that the season would be played. A new schedule was announced on November 2, 2007, but only included 12 of the expected 14 teams; the Blazers and the Arizona Sting had been removed. The reasons that the Blazers and Sting opted out of the season were not given, just that it was “due to a number of business issues”, and that both teams would return in 2009. A dispersal draft was held on November 5, 2007. The 2009 NLL se… More:

Chapters: Brown Bears Football, Brown University Band, Brown Stadium, Meehan Auditorium, Brown Bears Men’s Lacrosse, Governor’s Cup, Stevenson Field. Excerpt: The Brown Bears is a name shared by all sports teams at Brown University, a university located in Providence, Rhode Island in the United States. The Bears are part of the Ivy League conference. Brown’s mascot is Bruno. Both the men’s and women’s teams share the name, competing in 37 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I sports. In football, the Bears, along with all other the Ivy League teams, compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Brown’s first mascot was a burro, first introduced in 1902 in a game against Harvard. The burro mascot was not retained after it seemed frightened by the noise of the game, and due to the laughter it provoked. The University eventually settled on the bear after the head of a brown bear was placed at an archway above the student union in 1904. In 1905 The Bears introduced Helen, the university’s first live bear mascot, at a game against Dartmouth. Bruno, Brown’s current mascot, was introduced in 1921, originally also as a live bear. A number of bears represented Bruno over the years, later being represented by a person in costume by the late 60′s. The Bears participate in 37 NCAA sports, ranking them third among all Division I institutions for number of sports offered. The Bears first fielded a football team in 1878, playing Amherst College in their inaugural game. In addition to football, the Bears participate in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s crew, men’s and women’s cross country, equestrian, fencing, field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, gymnastics, men’s and women’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s la… More:

Excerpt: World Series Cricket (WSC) was a break away professional cricket competition staged between 1977 and 1979 and organised by Kerry Packer for his Australian television network, Nine Network. The matches ran in opposition to established international cricket. World Series Cricket drastically changed the nature of cricket, and its influence continues to be felt today. The series originated due to two main factors – the widespread view that players were not paid sufficient amounts to make a living from cricket, and that Packer wished to secure the exclusive broadcasting rights to Australian cricket, then held by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). After the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) refused to accept Channel Nine’s bid to gain exclusive television rights to Australia’s Test matches in 1976, Packer set up his own series by secretly signing agreements with leading Australian, English, Pakistani, South African and West Indian players, most notably England captain Tony Greig, West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, Australian captain Greg Chappell and former Australian Captain Ian Chappell. Packer was aided by businessmen John Cornell and Austin Robertson, both of whom were involved with the initial setup and ad… More:

Richard E. (Dick) Dietl, born May 31, 1930, in Dunnell, MN, has spent 62 years of his life as a writer, mostly as a magazine or newspaper journalist. As a graduate of Luther College, Decorah, IA, his introduction into college sports came as a stringer for the LaCrosse Tribune, LaCrosse, WI, and a writer for the Luther College student paper, Chips. After a trip to Korea as a writer at the expense of the United States Army, he spent seven years in a teaching career he loathed. Dietl worked part-time at the Fairmont Daily Sentinel, Fairmont, MN, until breaking away from education into full time employment as its sports editor. That lasted a year before he began a 46-year trek through college athletics at the University of Northern Iowa (then the State College of Iowa), Drake University, West Texas State A&M University (then West Texas State University), George Washington University, Duke University and the University of Oregon. Throw in seven years with the National Rehabilitation Association, Alexandria, VA, and five years under the wing of the White House with the President%u2019s Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities. Dietl was married twice, had three children, Rick, Lizanne and Carrie Ann with his first wife and four grandchildren. He suffered a sub-cranial aneurysm in 1986 and a stroke in 2006, cutting short an oil painting career that he claims was going nowhere. Just a worthy hobby. He proclaims himself sufficiently untalented on any playing field, despite the inner feeling of being a potential star. He became an observer of those with real athletic talent, devoting much of his time in exalting their accomplishments with the written word.

In Slices of Orange, Sal Maiorana and Scott Pitoniak recapture the heroics of running back Jim Brown’s 43-point performance against Colgate at old Archbold Stadium; the pain of Keith Smart’s jumper that denied Syracuse a national title in 1987; and the joy of forward Carmelo Anthony’s levitation act in the 2003 NCAA basketball championship game. They tell of the fierce SU-Georgetown basketball rivalry and John Thompson’s incendiary comments that ignited it and how the Gait brothers, Paul and Gary, revolutionized the game of lacrosse and laid the foundation for a college sports dynasty. About the Authors:Sal Maiorana is a regular contributor to numerous magazines and is the author of ten other books, including a two-volume history of the Buffalo Bills. He has also won numerous New York State Publishers Association citations for his work with the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, New York. Scott Pitoniak has spent the past quarter-century as an award-winning sports columnist for the Democrat and Chronicle. He has been named one of the top ten sports columnists in the United States by the Associated Press Sports Editors.
