American Indian Lacrosse: Little Brother of War

American Indian Lacrosse: Little Brother of War

$13.92

To understand the aboriginal roots of lacrosse, one must enter a world of spiritual belief and magic where players sewed inchworms into the innards of lacrosse balls and medicine men gazed at miniature lacrosse sticks to predict future events, where bits of bat wings were twisted into the stick’s netting, and where famous players were—and are still—buried with their sticks. Here Thomas Vennum brings this world to life.

If the Ball's in the Air a Season in Tee-Ball

If the Ball’s in the Air a Season in Tee-Ball

$15.91

Baseball is played in the same way from the first year to the time the player progresses to high school, college and, perhaps, even to the major leagues. There are techniques to successful throwing, catching, hitting and running the bases. These are the same in the first year and every season thereafter. This book, “If the ball’s in the air.” describes those techniques. It is written in simple terms for young readers and baseball players. It will help them to enjoy the game more and to play it better. The lessons include fictional stories of major league players who, as youngsters, also had to learn to play baseball, overcoming the challenges our new players face. This book is also a personal diary and a keepsake for the Tee-Baller. It becomes the record of that first year. More importantly, the diary is the place to record all of the accomplishments made in that first year. That first year in organized baseball is called Tee-BallJud Breslin is the father of five boys, all of whom he coached throughout their little league careers. Now a grandfather with three granddaughters,he has run the Tee-Ball program in Boonton, Mountain Lakes, and Rockaway Valley, New Jersey for over fifteen years. Excerpt: A BOSU Balance Trainer , or BOSU ball as it is often called, is a fitness training device, invented in 1999 by David Weck, consisting of an inflated rubber hemisphere attached to a rigid platform. It is also referred to as the “blue half-ball”, because it looks like a stability ball cut in half. The name is an acronym which stands for “BOth Sides Up” a reference to the two ways a BOSU ball can be positioned . The device is often used for balance training. When the dome side faces up, the BOSU ball provides an unstable surface while the device remains stable. This combination of stable/unstable allows a wide range of users, from the young , elderly, or injured to the elite level athlete . With the dome side up, the device can be used for athletic drills and aerobic activities. As the name suggests, the device can also be flipped over so that the platform faces up. In this position, the device is highly unstable and can be used for a wide array of exercises as well. Criticism Very little controlled research on healthy populations has been done on training with the BOSU ball

Women’s Lacrosse: A Guide for Advanced Players and Coaches

$32.95

Women’s lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. As stick technology advances, athleticism increases, and rules and regulations adapt, even the most experienced players and coaches need to keep current on all aspects of the game. Janine Tucker, head women’s lacrosse coach at the Johns Hopkins University, and Maryalice Yakutchik, a writer and former lacrosse player, here supply the ultimate guide to women’s lacrosse. Each chapter provides a detailed explanation of a specific skill or technique, illustrated with easy-to-read instructional diagrams and photographs. Coach Tucker begins with lacrosse survival skills—throwing, catching, cradling, and scooping ground balls—and then moves on to more advanced techniques, such as precise checking, fast footwork, correct stick and body position, deceptive shooting, and quick dodges. Chapters on cutting-edge offensive and defensive strategy, as well as specialized skills such as goal-tending and the draw, will get any team ready to hit the field. For young women who want to play at the college level, the concluding chapter on recruiting offers a timeline; testimony from players, parents, and college coaches who have been through the process; and a sample résumé.
