Oxendine. Through sport, Indians sought blessings from a higher spirit. Sport that evolved from religious rites retained a spiritual dimension, as seen in the attitude and manner of preparing and participating. In American Indian Sports Heritage, Oxendine discusses the history and importance in everyday life of ball games (especially lacrosse), running, archery, swimming, snow snake, hoop-and-pole, and games of chance. Indians gained nationwide visibility as athletes in baseball and football; the teams at boarding schools such as the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania and the Haskell Institute in Kansas were especially famous. Oxendine describes the apex of Indian sports during the first three decades of the twentieth century and chronicles the decline since. He looks at the career of the legendary Jim Thorpe and provides brief biographies of other Indian athletes before and after 1930. Joseph B. Oxendine, a Lumbee who grew up in a segregated Indian community in North Carolina, played professional baseball for three years prior to completing his doctoral degree at Boston University. November 7, 1974 in Peterborough, Ontario) is a professional lacrosse player for the Rochester Knighthawks in the National Lacrosse League and the Toronto Nationals in Major League Lacrosse. Grant was drafted by the Buffalo Bandits in the third round of the 1995 MILL Entry Draft. He was never signed by the Bandits, opting instead to attend college, re-entered the draft four years later when he was drafted first overall by the Rochester Knighthawks in the 1999 NLL Entry Draft, and was named NLL Rookie of the Year for the 2000 season. Prep recently acquired the Saint Peter’s Church and Grammar School, which has held school masses and team practices. Students at Prep are required to take two years of Latin, three years of mathematics, three years of history, three years of science, four years of English, two years of modern language (choosing Spanish, French, German or Italian), and four years of religion. Prep offers art and music classes for students wishing to broaden their creativity and to pursue the arts in college. Independent study courses include Greek Honors, Portfolio Art, AP Calculus BC, and various forms of instrumental music. Other elective classes are offered to juniors and seniors and there are many honors and AP classes to choose from. The school recently inaugurated the John E. Browning, S.J., ’46, Learning Center, which features resources for individuated learning and a learning specialist. Still, many people cite an inner city environment as a force of Academic Underproduction by the student body. I Was Write All Along $2.86 Richard E. (Dick) Dietl, born May 31, 1930, in Dunnell, MN, has spent 62 years of his life as a writer, mostly as a magazine or newspaper journalist. As a graduate of Luther College, Decorah, IA, his introduction into college sports came as a stringer for the LaCrosse Tribune, LaCrosse, WI, and a writer for the Luther College student paper, Chips. After a trip to Korea as a writer at the expense of the United States Army, he spent seven years in a teaching career he loathed. Dietl worked part-time at the Fairmont Daily Sentinel, Fairmont, MN, until breaking away from education into full time employment as its sports editor. That lasted a year before he began a 46-year trek through college athletics at the University of Northern Iowa (then the State College of Iowa), Drake University, West Texas State A&M University (then West Texas State University), George Washington University, Duke University and the University of Oregon. Throw in seven years with the National Rehabilitation Association, Alexandria, VA, and five years under the wing of the White House with the President%u2019s Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities. Dietl was married twice, had three children, Rick, Lizanne and Carrie Ann with his first wife and four grandchildren. He suffered a sub-cranial aneurysm in 1986 and a stroke in 2006, cutting short an oil painting career that he claims was going nowhere. Just a worthy hobby. He proclaims himself sufficiently untalented on any playing field, despite the inner feeling of being a potential star.
