How To Save Big On Your Next Car!

Everyone loves getting a new car. Everything about the car is pristine. There are no tears in the upholstery, the engine is brand new with no wear at all, and it even smells new. But all those things go away with time, and you’re left with the car payments of a new car.

Startlingly (in my opinion) you can find an almost new car with low mileage for a lot less. Car dealers always seem to have a ton of almost-new cars on their lots. It’s a mystery where these nearly new cars come from. I recently saw a 2008 Infiniti G35 with 17,000 miles for sale at a dealership that sells new & used Infiniti Los Angeles. There’s 2009 Ford F-150 available for $27,000 at a used Ford Orange County dealership.  And a 2008 Nissan Sentra for $13,000 at a Los Angeles Nissan Dealer. Who would buy a brand new car, take the worst of the depreciation, and let it go while it’s still so new? Maybe they weren’t able to make their car payments.  Maybe their company gets them a new car every year? Beats me?  The point is that you can get it for far less than they paid new – and it’s still a relatively new car!

Pricing

Logic would seem to tell us that a used car’s price should be it’s price when it was new, less the miles that have been driven, any damage, and of course depreciation because last year’s model is not as desirable as this year’s model. It turns out that depreciation counts for a lot. If you had bought that same car last year, you would still be happy with your purchase, even if the manufacturer has released a new model with the latest features. You would almost certainly still owe more on it than it’s worth on the used car market. Even so, many people want the most current model when they purchase a car. They’ll be in the used car boat inside of a year.

Why not take advantage of this perception which excessively diminishes the price of used vehicles? Pick a car you like,. Most car dealers will certify vehicles that are in good condition and have a limited number of miles. Financing is available on a used car, just like on a new car. Many of these cars are still under their original warranty, and the dealer can sell an extended warranty.

Hindsight is 20/20

Often when a new model is released, there are unknown problems. Many consumer advocate groups and car magazines test the new car models each year and publish the results of their tests. But they only have a short window of time in which to complete their testing. Some information, like how reliable a car is just isn’t available until thousands of them are on the road over an extended period of time. If you buy a used car, you’ll have some of this type of information available to help you decide which car to buy. Besides, even the best-built new cars have recalls over the first few years. With a used car, many of these problems have already been taken care of.

If you are trying to cut costs, like so many are, think about buying a late model used car. A car dealer who sells new cars is the best person to buy a good used car of the same make from. You’ll find a good selection, sales people who are familiar with the car, and factory trained technicians who can service your car going forward.
