Fighting in Lacrosse and hockey?

Are they allowed to fight in lacrosse? I just watched a video of two players fighting and the referees were just standing there. Is that allowed? I know they can check but I don’t really know what that means anyway. How about in ice hockey I have definetely seen fight in their games, and it seems like it is okay to do it.

It is most certainly not “allowed.” In fact, it is penalized quite harshly, usually at least 2 minutes in the penalty box (which penalizes the team, leaving them “man down”) if not thrown out of the game if a fight is enough. It is not worth it to fight for the team, not if you want to win.

Although lacrosse is a fast-paced and seemingly rough game, I have seen very few fights in my years, especially no worse than any other sports game.

You mention not understanding what it is to “check.” It is essentially a way to remove the ball from another opposing player. You will always see a call for “slash” though, if the stick ever hits the other players neck/helmet/head. There are many rules in regard to this though:

“A player may gain possession of the ball by dislodging it from an opponent’s crosse with a stick check. A stick check is the controlled poking and slapping of the stick and gloved hands of the player in possession of the ball. Body checking is permitted if the opponent has the ball or is within five yards of a loose ball. All body contact must occur from the front or side, above the waist and below the shoulders, and with both hands on the stick. An opponent’s crosse may also be stick checked if it is within five yards of a loose ball or ball in the air. Aggressive body checking is discouraged.”

The rules vary dependent upon who is playing though: men’s and women’s rules are completely different (no checking is even allowed in a woman’s game) but even the rules between men’s and boy’s are different, as men’s allows much more to “slide by”)

As for ice hockey, it used to be allowed much more than it is now. In fact, you used to see a number of fights in the NHL and the minor leagues, but since the NHL came back from it’s short hiatus, they have cracked down on fights. The only games I believe you can expect to see fights (and many of them) are the minor league Canadian Hockey Leagues.
