Lacrosse Games

Custom Lacrosse Socks
Lacrosse as a sport has its origins in the sports played by the Aborigines. The game is quite similar to the racquet and ball games and also field hockey but that is where the similarity ends.
Lacrosse – The Game
The game might be one of the inventions of the Aborigines (not of Australia, but native America) but today, it is one of the most popular sports in America. There are lacrosse teams which have a world appeal; it is quite a physical game. The racquet is known as the lacrosse stick or simply the Crosse. A mesh is knitted to the frame quite similar to the frame of the tennis racquet but in this case, the strings are loosely strung. These ‘loose’ natures are to help ‘catch’ and ‘carry’ the ball and pass it to your other team member. In this way, the pass is continued until the team gets a goal. It is a fixed time game and like football or hockey, the team with the maximum goals wins!
This sport requires lots of agility and is quite fast. The men’s lacrosse is often more fiercer from the women’s lacrosse (obviously!). However, there is one more version of the game known as the box lacrosse. There are 10 members in a team including the goal keeper and a full body contact is allowed like rugby or American football! This sport is a mixture of rugby, American football, tennis, field hockey, etc. There might be more associations, but can be safely skipped for the moment.
Lacrosse Clothing
The lacrosse clothing needs to be really tough but light and flexible at the same time to allow full body movement and should not hinder an athlete’s movement. The international lacrosse federation specifies rules related to clothing as well as accessories. Socks are also an important part of the game. Lacrosse needs custom made socks; socks which are quite tough. Sometimes the level of fiber strength of the lacrosse socks is compared to the football socks which are arguably one the toughest and lightest socks on the planet! A lot of research goes into the knitting and fiber selection of the socks used in lacrosse or in any other sport.
For laymen, there might be no difference between sports socks but in actual there is lot of difference. And the difference is not just restricted to size of the socks. There are basically two types of lacrosse socks that are available – tube and crew length. While the tube length is more common, the crew length is often experimented with. Like football, the tube length also houses the shin guards (earlier). These days, the shin guards have been discontinued as hitting on the shins is a foul. Therefore, the length of the socks has been tailored to the custom crew length like tennis.
The advantage of crew length socks in lacrosse is that it does not allow blood to be under pressure from the elastic but firm grip of the material to the calves. The calf muscle is quite rich in blood vessels and hence a length shorter than the calf length is preferred.

Excerpt: Invesco Field at Mile High – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Many fans opposed a corporate name and wished to retain the previous venue’s name, “Mile High Stadium.” The Denver Post initially refused to use the Invesco label and referred to it as Mile High for several years before changing their policy and adding INVESCO to articles. Invesco Field at Mile High is used primarily for football games. It is the home field for Denver’s National Football League team, the Denver Broncos. American Indian Sports Heritage $35 “From scenes of Senecas playing snow snake and Cheyennes competing in chungke, to the exploits of Olympian runner Billy Mills and Yankee pitcher Allie Reynolds, Oxendine has compiled a useful compendium of information on traditional Indian games and the entry of Native Americans into modern collegiate and professional sports, especially during the ‘heyday’ period between 1890 and 1930.”-Choice. “Neither the highly commercialized nature of professional sports today nor the more casual attitude prevailing in amateur activities captures the essence of Indian sport,” writes Joseph B. Oxendine. Through sport, Indians sought blessings from a higher spirit. Sport that evolved from religious rites retained a spiritual dimension, as seen in the attitude and manner of preparing and participating. In American Indian Sports Heritage, Oxendine discusses the history and importance in everyday life of ball games (especially lacrosse), running, archery, swimming, snow snake, hoop-and-pole, and games of chance. Indians gained nationwide visibility as athletes in baseball and football; the teams at boarding schools such as the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania and the Haskell Institute in Kansas were especially famous. Oxendine describes the apex of Indian sports during the first three decades of the twentieth century and chronicles the decline since. He looks at the career of the legendary Jim Thorpe and provides brief biographies of other Indian athletes before and after 1930. Joseph B. Oxendine, a Lumbee who grew up in a segregated Indian community in North Carolina, played professional baseball for three years prior to completing his doctoral degree at Boston University. He is chancellor of Pembroke State University and has published extensively in the fields of motor learning and sport psychology. Oxendine has provided a new afterword for this Bison Books edition. |

Excerpt: World Series Cricket (WSC) was a break away professional cricket competition staged between 1977 and 1979 and organised by Kerry Packer for his Australian television network, Nine Network. The matches ran in opposition to established international cricket. World Series Cricket drastically changed the nature of cricket, and its influence continues to be felt today. The series originated due to two main factors – the widespread view that players were not paid sufficient amounts to make a living from cricket, and that Packer wished to secure the exclusive broadcasting rights to Australian cricket, then held by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). After the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) refused to accept Channel Nine’s bid to gain exclusive television rights to Australia’s Test matches in 1976, Packer set up his own series by secretly signing agreements with leading Australian, English, Pakistani, South African and West Indian players, most notably England captain Tony Greig, West Indies captain Clive Lloyd, Australian captain Greg Chappell and former Australian Captain Ian Chappell. During 200405, he registered career-highs in points (14 ppg) and minutes (35), playing and starting in all 82 regular season contests. Atkins was traded along with Caron Butler to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Kwame Brown and Laron Profit in the 2005 offseason. As Atkins appeared sparingly throughout the season, the Wizards bought out the remainder of his contract on January 18, 2006. Atkins had voiced displeasure with the amount of playing he was receiving, and he and the team both felt a change of scenery was needed. On January 23, 2006, Atkins signed as a free … More: |

Silk Parachute $15 A WONDROUS NEW BOOK OF MCPHEE’S PROSE PIECES—IN MANY ASPECTS HIS MOST PERSONAL IN FOUR DECADES The brief, brilliant essay “Silk Parachute,” which first appeared in The New Yorker a decade ago, has become John McPhee’s most anthologized piece of writing. In the nine other pieces here—highly varied in length and theme—McPhee ranges with his characteristic humor and intensity through lacrosse, long-exposure view-camera photography, the weird foods he has sometimes been served in the course of his reportorial travels, a U.S. Open golf championship, and a season in Europe “on the chalk” from the downs and sea cliffs of England to the Maas valley in the Netherlands and the champagne country of northern France. Some of the pieces are wholly personal. In luminous recollections of his early years, for example, he goes on outings with his mother, deliberately overturns canoes in a learning process at a summer camp, and germinates a future book while riding on a jump seat to away games as a basketball player. But each piece—on whatever theme—contains somewhere a personal aspect in which McPhee suggests why he was attracted to write about the subject, and each opens like a silk parachute, lofted skyward and suddenly blossoming with color and form. |

Slices of Orange: Great Games and Performers in Syracuse University Sports History $7.03 From the last-second heroics of Wilmeth Sidat-Singh in Archbold Stadium to the last-second heroics of Donovan McNabb in the Carrier Dome more than a half century later, this book is a chronicle of the rich tradition of Syracuse University sports. There are games that stand the test of time performances that years, even decades later bring a smile or in some cases a grimace, to a fan’s face. They are indelible moments that, when strung together, give you a sense of a college’s history. In Slices of Orange, Sal Maiorana and Scott Pitoniak recapture the heroics of running back Jim Brown’s 43-point performance against Colgate at old Archbold Stadium; the pain of Keith Smart’s jumper that denied Syracuse a national title in 1987; and the joy of forward Carmelo Anthony’s levitation act in the 2003 NCAA basketball championship game. They tell of the fierce SU-Georgetown basketball rivalry and John Thompson’s incendiary comments that ignited it and how the Gait brothers, Paul and Gary, revolutionized the game of lacrosse and laid the foundation for a college sports dynasty. About the Authors:Sal Maiorana is a regular contributor to numerous magazines and is the author of ten other books, including a two-volume history of the Buffalo Bills. He has also won numerous New York State Publishers Association citations for his work with the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, New York. Scott Pitoniak has spent the past quarter-century as an award-winning sports columnist for the Democrat and Chronicle. He has been named one of the top ten sports columnists in the United States by the Associated Press Sports Editors. |

Sports And Games Of The Renaissance $55 The Renaissance was a period of extraordinary spirit and development that marked a critical stage in the history of sports and games. In Europe the development of a moneyed economy and more refined methods of timekeeping ushered in a new era of leisure and leisure-activity, in which the old tradition of the Shrove Tuesday Football match deepened in the cultural consciousness. In Asia, Sumo’s gradual codification began to develop alongside ancestors of the modern game of hackey-sack. In North and South America, European explorers saw how traditional team sports and games such as lacrosse and pelota could serve as an integrating and uniting phenomenon. Series editor Andrew Leibs provides narrative chapters on Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, North America, and Oceania, each of which shows how modern-day form of recreation evolved during the Renaissance. In addition, readers will learn how to play games that had been previously lost to history. This volume is the latest installment in the Sports and Games Through History series. Each geographically arranged chapter describes sports, games, and rituals of play, along with descriptions on equipment and instructions for making or adapting game pieces. |

Chapters: Kezar Stadium, Harding Park Golf Club, War Memorial Gymnasium, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, Kezar Pavilion, Boxer Stadium, Rams Stadium. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Kezar Stadium – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In 1922, the San Francisco Park Commission accepted a $100,000 gift from the estate of Mary Kezar. The gift was intended to build a memorial in honor of Kezar’s mother and uncles who were pioneers in the area. After the City and County of San Francisco appropriated an additional $200,000 the stadium was built in a year. Dedication ceremonies were held on May 2, 1925, and featured a two-mile footrace between Ville Ritola and Paavo Nurmi of Finland, who were two of the greatest runners of their day. The stadium had many uses in the 1930s. In addition to track and field competitions, Kezar Stadium also hosted motorcycle racing, auto racing, rugby, lacrosse, soccer, baseball, boxing, cricket and football. The stadium was also the home field of several local schools such as Santa Clara University, University of San Francisco, St. Mary’s College of California and the now defunct San Francisco Polytechnic High School. In 1926 the Stadium also became the home of the East-West Shrine Game. In the 1928 city championship game between San Francisco Polytechnic and Lowell High School a crowd of over 50,000 people saw the matchup between the bitter cross-town rivals. That game still holds attendance records for a high school football game in Northern California. Stanford University played four of its home football games at Kezar, one in 1928 and three in 1942. Kezar Stadium was also the home to two different professional football teams. The San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders both began their existence at the stadium. The Raiders played a… More: |

The 1908 Olympic Games: Results for All Competitors in All Events, with Commentary $75 The 1908 Olympic Games were controversial. There was almost constant bickering among the American team and the British officials. Because of the controversies, the 1908 Olympics have been termed "The Battle of Shepherd’s Bush," referring to the site of the Olympic Stadium. Reports of the 1908 Olympics have been rare and do not for instance contain full results for archery, track and field athletics, football (soccer), gymnastics, motorboating and shooting. A great deal of new information has been discovered by the authors, and this work gives complete results for all events. The information presented is based primarily on 1908 sources. For the first time, definitive word on the sites, dates, events, competitors, and nations as well as the event results are available for all of the 1908 Olympic events, including boxing, cycling, diving, fencing, field hockey, lacrosse, polo, raquets, swimming, lawn tennis, tug-of-war, weightlifting, wrestling and yachting, among other sports. The Fastest Game on Two Feet and Other Poems about How Sports Began $17.95 Have you ever wondered how your favorite sports began? Skiing got its start when our ancestors, tired of crashing through snowdrifts, strapped animal bones to their feet. The history of other sports is just as surprising—the original soccer ball was a skull; bowling was part of an early religious ritual; and lacrosse games initially stretched for miles and lasted for days. Alice Low’s witty and fascinating poems are vividly illustrated by John O’Brien’s clever and hilarious cartoons—hitting a true home run for young readers. Includes a time line of sports history. |
