I have written in the past about the distinct differences between collecting sport memorabilia as a hobby and collecting with the sole intention of making money. I would like to delve deeper into the business side of things and talk about how collecting game-used memorabilia for profit differs from collecting for fun.
Clearly, when you are buying sport memorabilia with the intention of flipping it, whether in the short or long term, you are simply looking for items that you feel have value that will rise over time. For instance, if you you see Bryce Harper’s college game-used jersey and feel that even though he will probably play a year or two in the minor leagues before he gets called up to play for the Washington Nationals that you will be able to sell the game-worn jersey down the road for at least two or three times your purchase price then that is something you need to consider. That is more of a speculative play from a long term vantage point.
On the short term side, you can do some research leading into the beginning of a season and speculate who you think a “breakout” star is going to be. For instance, before the 2010 baseball season started if you felt Jose Bautista was going to have a career year, then maybe it would be a good idea for you to go out and buy an autographed baseball signed by Bautista or one of Bautista’s game-used jerseys. Six months later you are looking at a guy who hit over fifty home runs, by far the most in the majors. Now you are sitting on some pretty valuable sport memorabilia and it is up to you to “sell high” and cash in on Jose’s monster season.
These are just two examples of how to approach collecting game-used memorabilia from a business perspective. The main point is to do your best to do some forward thinking and try to buy low with the intention of selling high. Does this sound familiar? It is exactly the same mindset you should when you approach the stock market. With that in mind, be careful and choose the game-used memorabilia items you invest in very carefully. The last thing you want is a worthless Ryan Leaf game-worn jersey sitting in your closet for the next two decades.
