Following college, Tierney pursued a master’s degree at Adelphi University , and coached high school lacrosse at Great Neck South High School , then Levittown Memorial High School. In 1982, Tierney’s took his first collegiate coaching position with the Rochester Institute of Technology . He took the team to its first NCAA tournaments in both 1983 and 1984. Following this success, Tierney joined the Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays as an assistant lacrosse coach (winning two national championships), and also served as head coach of the soccer team from 1985 to 1987. It is located at 723 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Broughton was named after the Raleigh aristocrat, Needham B. Broughton, who contributed much to the public schools of the area. Broughton is currently ranked 410th in Newsweek’s list of the top United States schools. It runs on a 4×4 modifiedblock schedule, and is one of the few in Wake County to do so. Broughton is known for its castle-like stone facade and tall bell tower. It offers over 25 Advanced Placement (AP) courses to challenge the upper tier of its students. The school offers four foreign languages: French, German, Latin, and Spanish. Broughton has produced eight UNC Morehead-Cains Scholars, three NC State Park Scholars, and one Wake Forest Reynolds Scholar in the past five years. Broughton’s sports teams play under the name “Capitals”. Excerpt: Dr. Laurie Davidson Cox (August 18, 1883October 1, 1968) was a leading landscape architect of his time and hall of fame lacrosse coach and contributor to the sport. He was professor of Landscape Engineering at Syracuse University, where he established the school’s lacrosse program, and later became the President of New England College. Born in Londonderry, Nova Scotia, Cox attended high school at Bellows Falls High School in Vermont. Following high school, he attended Acadia University where he would receive a degree in 1903. Cox then attended Harvard University where he graduated magna cum laude in 1908 with a Landscape Architecture degree. While at Harvard, Cox played lacrosse, basketball and ice hockey. On September 7, 1910, Cox married Gretchen Smith. Cox was one of the leading landscape architects in the country. Following Harvard, Cox worked for four years with the Los Angeles Parks Department. While working with the Los Angeles Parks Department he designed the exterior landscape of both the Lincoln Park and Griffith Park, and called for a city parkway that would “add to the health and happiness of its citizens.” His plan was only partially implemented. In 1915, Cox, funded by John D. Rockefeller, performed the first census of trees in New York City. In his report, A Street Tree System for New York City, Borough of Manhattan, Cox found that most street trees in Manhattan to be in bad condition. Part of his recommendation was to plant 200 trees per square mile on the island. Cox advocated for a new kind of park in the U.S. National Park system that balanced the need for recreation and preservation. The Tom Borrelli Award is presented by the National Lacrosse League to “the league’s most outstanding newspaper writer or columnist”. The award is named for Tom Borrelli (1957-2008), a writer for The Buffalo News who covered the Buffalo Bandits from the team’s inception in 1992 to his death in 2008. He was inducted into the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame in 2007.The award was created at the end of the 2005 season and, surprisingly, Borrelli was never a recipient. However, Tom Borrelli was the first sportswriter inducted into the NLL Hall of Fame.In 2009, The Buffalo News began awarding a lacrosse scholarship and trophy named for Tom Borrelli to the top high school lacrosse player in Western New York.
