Whitby Warriors swept aside by Six Nations

The Whitby Warriors managed to exceed and fall short of expectations all in one fell swoop this summer.

In the end, though, it seems head coach Derek Keenan has the junior A lacrosse team on the right track to become a Minto Cup contender once again in the not-too-distant future.

Having lost about a dozen players from the team that managed just an 8-14 record and missed the playoffs in 2009, the Warriors were hopeful only of a middle-of-the-pack finish with Keenan as the new man in charge.

Instead, the Warriors challenged for second place for much of the season, ended up in third with a 17-5 record and were the only team to defeat first-place Orangeville in the regular season.

The falling short part came in the playoffs, where the Warriors eked out a 3-2 series win over Brampton before being swept aside in four games of the semifinal against the Six Nations Arrows, a team they had beaten in both regular season meetings.

“It was a good year, but we’re not satisfied because the expectations changed as we went into playoffs,” said Keenan. “We thought we were a little bit better than we ended up at the end of it all.”

The main difference in the playoffs, according to Keenan, was the big Six Nations defenders keeping the smaller Whitby skill players in check, not always using legal methods, in his mind.

With only two penalties called against the Arrows Tuesday at the Iroquois Park Sports Centre, the Warriors simply couldn’t get their offence going and lost 4-3, completing the sweep.

Nevertheless, Keenan is optimistic about the future of the team, which will lose five players to graduation next year, but may well get Mark Matthews back after he spent a season in Coquitlam.

Matthews is exactly the type of big, skilled player that would have helped penetrate the stifling Six Nations defence.

Keenan, a highly successful coach in the National Lacrosse League as well, had a hectic summer as he also coached his son’s Whitby midget team.

But, with a strong staff that included Jeff McComb, Jim Dasberg and Dan Ladouceur, he accepted the junior A job with an eye to the future.

“I think I jumped into this a little sooner than I thought I would to be honest,” said Keenan, who relied on his assistants to cover him at times. “We’ve developed that (midget) group from seven, eight years olds to play at the higher levels and think a lot of them will be ready to play junior B next year and eventually junior A.”

Anetso, the Cherokee Ball Game: At the Center of Ceremony and Identity

A precursor to lacrosse, anetso, a centuries-old Cherokee ball game still played today, is a vigorous sport that rewards speed, strength, and agility. It is also the focus of several linked ritual activities. Zogry argues that members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation continue to perform selected aspects of their cultural identity by engaging in anetso. He shows that it is a ceremonial cycle that incorporates a variety of activities which, taken together, complicate standard distinctions of game versus ritual, public display versus private performance, and tradition versus innovation.

Until Proven Innocent: Political Correctness and the Shameful Injustices of the Duke Lacrosse Rape Case

$1.99

“A masterful examination of the pathetic rush to judgment in the Duke rape case.”—John Grisham  What began that night shocked Duke University and Durham, North Carolina.      And it continues to captivate the nation:  the Duke lacrosse team members’ alleged rape of an African-American stripper and the unraveling of the case against them.      In this ever-deepening American tragedy, Stuart Taylor Jr. and KC Johnson argue, law enforcement, a campaigning prosecutor, biased journalists, and left-leaning academics repeatedly refused to pursue the truth while scapegoats were made of these young men, recklessly tarnishing their lives.      The story harbors multiple dramas, including the actions of a DA running for office; the inappropriate charges that should have been apparent to academics at Duke many months ago; the local and national media, who were so slow to take account of the publicly available evidence; and the appalling reactions of law enforcement, academia, and many black leaders.      Until Proven Innocent is the only book that covers all five aspects of the case (personal, legal, academic, political, and media) in a comprehensive fashion. Based on interviews with key members of the defense team, many of the unindicted lacrosse players, and Duke officials, it is also the only book to include interviews with all three of the defendants, their families, and their legal teams.            Taylor and Johnson’s coverage of the Duke case was the earliest, most honest, and most comprehensive in the country, and here they take the idiocies and dishonesty of right- and left-wingers alike head on, shedding new light on the dangers of rogue prosecutors and police and a cultural tendency toward media-fueled
