Overall, the rules of women’s lacrosse are very similar to men’s lacrosse. The playing field is 120 by 70 yards. Sticks are a bit smaller; 35 1/2-43 1/4 inches, with a 7-9″ head. Women’s stick pockets are more shallow than men’s; if one were to play with a men’s stick in a women’s game she would need to tighten the strings. The rules state that the top of the ball must remain even with or above the side walls when in the pocket of the stick.

There are 12 players on each team: 6 defenders, 5 attackers and a goal keep. Game play begins identically to men’s, with a face off between two forwards. This “draw” is repeated after every goal, and at the start of the second half. In the draw, both centers begin with their sticks crossed on the ground. Whoever gets the ball to their team wins control, and the game proceeds.

Though stick checking is allowed, a foul is called if the check occurs too close to the head or face. It is illegal for a player to hold another player’s stick down to the ground. Body checking, a core part of men’s lacrosse, is not allowed in the women’s game. Therefore it is also illegal to stick check across the body, and players are not allowed to cradle so close to their body that stick checking is not possible. Control can be obtained either by cross-checking the ball or intercepting a pass. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Women’s high school lacrosse games are 50 minutes long, divided into two 25 minutes halves. All players must wear mouth guards and eye wear.

Within the past decade, lacrosse has seen explosive growth on the elementary, junior high and high school, and college levels, rapidly becoming one of America’s most popular playing sports. Lifelong lacrosse player and coach Daniel Morris, along with noted author Michael Morris, distills the essence of this exciting, fast-paced game into one compact volume, teaching everything the beginning and intermediate coach needs to know about the rules, equipment, skills, and drills of this venerable game. Unlike other books on lacrosse, this guide reflects recent important rule changes, as well as the latest techniques in offense and defense, stick-handling, and advances in equipment that have transformed the game as it is played today. Chapters focus on critical elements of individual and team play, conducting practices, skill-building drills, and a playbook of offensive and defensive strategies. A resource list of suppliers, camps, and additional information is included. This is a book that will find a place on every coach’s and player’s shelf.
