An Introduction to Soccer

For many decades football has been one of the most popular sports in the world but there are still some who can not even follow the game. Do not be embarrassed, this is not a big deal, nor is it difficult to learn what the game is on, how he played and who or what is at stake. After reading this article, you’ll be able to feel much more comfortable to your son or daughter football match.

Firstly, the field in the standard regulation could be a little larger than you think. The length of the field may vary from 100 to 130 metres. The width varies from 50 to 100 metres. The lines at the end of each side of the field lines are called Goal, lines up the sides of the field lines and the coast line in the center of the field is called the mid field. Quite simple right?

Now, the ball can come in 3 different sizes: 3.4 and 5. Size 3 footballs are for small Tykes 8 years and younger. Size 4 bullets are for 8-12 years and the size 5 ball is for ages 13 and older crowd.

Then we have all the players. Each team is allowed not to have over 11 players each on the ground at any given time. In a basic configuration the player positions consists of a goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 3 and 3 mid defensive forward. Also on the playground during the referee is with its 2 assisstants either on the sidelines.

Now, the game length can be a little long. In a typical football match you will 2 45 half-minute with a break of 15 minutes at half time. This may be extended by the referee if there are prolonged injury during the game that require a stopage time.

Scoring in the game of football is easy to follow. Each objective is regarded as the point 1. So, whenever the opposing team draws a ball with something other than their weapons in order, he receives 1 point. If both teams are tied after regulation, they will be what we call the sudden death where the first team to score wins. Usually, will be 2 periods of the sudden death of 15 minutes each. Now, if neither team scores, then both teams will take penalty kicks. In this scenario, each team chooses 5 players to get a free shot at goal in the penalty box when the goalkeeper resides. This will follow until the team finds himself with more goals.

For the game of football at a glance. There are other aspects but it explicit and you should be able to come back on them while displaying your first match. Now, the next time you attend a match, you do not look foolish to ask many questions.

“I accepted the certainty of my untimely death with gallows humor and a calculator. I’d read somewhere that each cigarette you smoke knocks seven minutes off your time on the planet. To amuse myself, I did the math: 153,000 cigarettes = two years of my life, up in smoke.” Julia Hansen first lit up at nineteen. Twenty years later, she was editing books about health — and smoking a pack or two a day. She denied her son fast food, but smoked in the house and car; curtailed his video games, but lit up at his soccer matches. Despite repeated attempts to quit, she always crawled back to her beloved menthol lights. Smoking had become a metaphorical chain around her neck, shackling her to an early death. Haunted by a nightmarish vision of her future — her son at her deathbed, begging her not to leave him — Hansen devised a drastic quit method. She bought a 72-foot length of chain that was “unwieldy as a corpse” and locked herself to a radiator in her dining room. What followed: seven days of cold-turkey misery, comic absurdity, and revelation as Hansen stepped from behind her wall of smoke to face her addiction to nicotine — and some painful truths. Clanking around her house like Marley’s ghost, white-knuckling cravings, and struggling to understand tobacco’s unyielding grip on her, Hansen confronted her life in smoke: fractured relationships, lifelong battles with alcohol and depression, and a profound sense of emptiness. On day 1, the chain was her addiction to nicotine, each link a story about cigarettes and self-loathing. By day 7, it had revealed its ringing, rattling truth — that every smoker has a story, and it always centers on clinging to a comfort that can kill you. In the end, Hansen’s story was painfully simple: She smoked to survive her life. And then, to save it, she quit. A great number of seekers find themselves in the seemingly unreal world of the suburbs. They read spirituality books but find themselves in carpools and coaching soccer, not in monasteries. Dave Goetz, a former pastor, shows that the suburbs are a real world, but a spiritually corrosive one. The land of SUVs and soccer leagues can truly be toxic to the soul. Suburbanites need to understand how the environment affects them and what spiritual disciplines are needed for their faith to survive and thrive. Goetz identifies eight toxins in the suburban life, such as hyper–competition and the “transactional” friendship, and suggests eight corresponding disciplines to keep the spiritual life authentic. Goetz weaves sociology studies, his own experiences, current events, wisdom of the spiritual masters, and a little humor to equip spiritual suburbanites for how to relate to God amidst Starbucks, strip–malls, and perfect lawns.

Finn McCool’s Football Club: The Birth, Death, and Resurrection of a Pub Soccer Team in the City of the Dead

$4.12

“Stephen Rea uses one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history as the backdrop for a love story–not your average love story either, as it’s also the love of a city, the ties that bind friends, and the passion for a sport. Soccer brings fans from around the globe together and that has never been proven more true than in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Rea’s book brings one of the biggest stories of the century down to a touching, emotional, personal level in a solid debut effort.”–Phil Schoen, GolTV commentatorIn 2004, Belfast-born Stephen Rea moved to New Orleans, a city where “football” means something entirely different than what it does for the British. After struggling to find a place to watch European soccer games, Rea discovered Finn McCool’s pub and its mixed clientele of good-humored European ex-pats, charismatic New Orleanians, and assorted matchless personalities. Irishmen exchanged jokes with the Scots, and the Dutch, English, and South African sat together swapping stories over murky drinks. Rea the Ulsterman became a regular and before long he was playing on the pub’s motley over-thirty-five fledgling soccer team.Gathered at the bar on August 27, 2005, members of the team were discussing their upcoming match, untroubled by the impending storm and unknowing that their city and team would nearly be obliterated by Hurricane Katrina in a matter of hours. Days later, the lucky among them were scattered across the country; the others struggled to survive as they awaited rescue in New Orleans. With clarity and compassion, Rea examines the disaster as he profiles the experiences of his teammates and their efforts to resurrect the team and pub that had become so central in all of their lives. A gripping and moving memoir about an unusual pub team and a devastating natural disaster, this work is a celebration of ex-pats and pubs, soccer and sportsmanship, and the strength it takes to rebuild a team, a city, and a life.

Excerpt: Nilo Procópio Peçanha (2 October 1867 31 March 1924) was a Brazilian politician. President of Rio de Janeiro State (1903-1906). Elected vice-president in 1906, he assumed the presidency in 1909 following the death of President Afonso Augusto Moreira Pena and served until 1910. He was disputably the only mulatto president of Brazil . Nilo Peçanha was born to Sebastião de Sousa Peçanha, a baker popularly called “Sebastião da Padaria” (Bakery Sebastian) and Joaquina Anália de Sá Freire, the descendent of a rich and noble family from northern Rio de Janeiro State. He was one of seven siblings (five boys and two girls). His family lived in a state of poverty in the remote and poor neighborhood of Morro do Coco, Campos dos Goytacazes, and moved to the downtown area when he started elementary education. He was frequently described as being a mulatto and often ridiculed in charges and jokes in the press for his skin color . During his youth, the local Campos dos Goytacazes social elite alluded to him as the “mestiço of Morro do Coco” (the half-breed from Morro do Coco district) . In 1921, when he ran for the Presidency of Republic, letters falsely attributed to the other candidate Artur Bernardes were published by the press and caused a political crisis because they insulted both the former president Marshal Hermes da Fonseca and also Peçanha, another former president, claiming he was a mulatto. Italian Job: A Journey to the Heart of Two Great Footballing Cultures

Italian Job: A Journey to the Heart of Two Great Footballing Cultures

$18.95

Soccer lies at the heart of popular culture around the world. It is played, watched, written about, and talked to death by millions virtually every day of the year. But how do the characteristics of England and Italy—two of the most passionate soccer playing countries—affect the game in these two nations? Do the national stereotypes of Italians as fervent, stylish lotharios and the English as cold-hearted eccentrics still hold true when they kick a ball around? For the first time, a player of the first rank—Gianluca Vialli—in conjunction with sportswriter and broadcaster Gabriele Marcotti, tackles this debate head on, and they have invited some of the biggest names to join them. Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger, Sven Goran Eriksson, Fabio Capello, and Marcello Lippi, among others, add their not inconsiderable weight to the highest-profile symposium on soccer ever convened. Every aspect of the game is explored, be it tactical and technical or cultural and sociological. Stuffed full of controversial opinions and gripping revelations, this study on the sport takes you on a journey to the very heart of two of the world’s great soccer cultures.

A “hilarious and utterly irreverent tale” (Irvine Welsh) of a year in the life of an abrasive pee-wee soccer coachGrowing up in Scotland, Alan Black learned that soccer was no mere game; it was a matter of life or death. In this harshly hilarious tale, Black, a Glasglow transplant living in suburban California, coaches the Dragons, a peewee team that proves an embarrassment to his beloved sport. They’re pampered. They’re soft. They’ve been told by their overprotective parents that (gasp!) “winning isn’t everything.” Using drills and bombast, Black attempts to whip the team into shape.Kick the Balls is a sidesplitting memoir of grass stains and free kicks, a no-holds-barred account of one man’s bafflement by an alien culture, and a stinging satire of American parenthood. Alan Black’s voice-howling from the sidelines-is that rare thing: a fresh, original, winning comic talent.

Excerpt: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Coliseum is now primarily the home of the USC Trojan football team. During the recent stretch of its success in football, most of USC’s regular home games, especially the alternating games with rivals UCLA and Notre Dame, attract a capacity 92,000 person crowd, although they regularly drew far less during the 1990s. The current official capacity of the Coliseum is 93,607. The Coliseum Commission also rents the Coliseum to various events, including international soccer games, musical concerts and other large outdoor events. Celebrating their 50th anniversary in Los Angeles, the Dodgers and Boston Red Sox played an exhibition game here on March 29, 2008; a Los Angeles and MLB record for attendance was broken, where 115,300 people attended the game. On June 17, 2009, the Coliseum played host to the 2009 NBA World Champion Los Angeles Lakers as the end point of the championship parade. Player and coach speeches were given at the Coliseum following a procession that began at the Staples Center. The Olympic Cauldron (also known as the Olympic Torch) was built for the stadium’s two Olympic games. It is still lit during the fourth quarter of USC football games, and other special occasions (e.g., when the Olympics are being held in another city). At the Los Angeles Dodgers Fiftieth Anniversary Game on March 29, 2008, the torch was lit for the ThinkCure! charity ceremony, while Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” was played and the majority of the attendees turned on their complimentary souvenir keychain flashlights. In 2004, the cauldron was lit non-stop for seven days in tribute to President Ronald Reagan, who had died; and it was lit again in April 2005 following the death of Pope John… More:

Journalist, wife, and mother of three, Claire Newman juggles work, soccer games, birthday parties, and errands. A successful writer at Nationweek, America’s second largest newsweekly, she makes her living by being, as she says, “a relentless snoop,” but she never was able to figure out why her best friend of twenty-three years, Lydia Finelli, dropped out of her life with no explanation. Claire hasn’t seen Lydia in five years, and her unresolved hurt and anger still linger, brought to the surface by a chance encounter at the local bakery. When Lydia calls Claire and asks for her help, urging her to come discuss the situation in person, Claire figures it is one of “life’s rare opportunities to tie up a loose end.”But when Claire arrives at Lydia’s house, she finds her ex-best friend dead. While all the obvious signs point to suicide, Claire can’t shake the feeling there’s something very wrong. The irrepressible, feisty Claire starts investigating, and soon the list of suspects includes Lydia’s neurologist husband, her psychiatrist neighbor, and even her son’s handsome soccer coach. As Claire uncovers the secrets of her friend’s past, and their relationship, the puzzle becomes even more complicated, and she finds that she really didn’t know Lydia very well at all.But knowledge comes with a price, and as Claire unravels the mystery of Lydia’s death, she puts herself — and the people she loves — in harm’s way. Smart and funny, with razor-sharp storytelling, My Ex-Best Friend is the debut of a fresh new voice in contemporary fiction.

Mihail Krauss was the eldest son of a tavern-owning farmer in Meeburg, a village of 950 German-speaking Lutheran Saxons in the Transylvania region of Romania. According to Canadian immigration records, in 1926, at age 18, he boarded the Canadian Pacific ship Minnedosa, and emigrated to Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. He often described his arrival saying, I had only ten cents in my pocket, didnt speak a word of English, didnt know a soul; not even the dogs barked at me. In the 1930s, he worked in a furniture factory by day. After hours he built apartments, beginning a life-long interest in real estate and construction. At some point his name was changed to Michael Kraus – it is not clear when this change occurred. In 1941, Michael Kraus began importing fabrics to Canada. In 1946 he formed a partnership to manufacture fabric. Initially adopting fabric looms to manufacture carpet, he founded Kraus Carpet Mills in 1959. A daring expansion into fibre extrusion, he founded Strudex Fibres in 1971. By his death in 2003, Kraus companies employed over 900 people at facilities across Canada, in the United States and in Australia. Michael Kraus joined the New Apostolic Church in 1932 and was ordained into the ministry one year later. Like other ministers in the New Apostolic Church, he served in a voluntary capacity, initially as an assistant local minister and later in various regional commissions. In 1955 he was ordained as an apostle and, in Zurich on June 21, 1958, he was ordained as a district apostle and national leader of the New Apostolic Church Can… More:

It’s only a game, Bill Littlefield’s National Public Radio program tells us, trying to keep sports in perspective. And for all the deadly serious perspectives of sports commentators and fans, Littlefield’s is perhaps the most realistic. It is certainly the most entertaining. Sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, Littlefield’s take on the games people play is as refreshing as it is enlightening. From baseball Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett’s untimely death, to pickup soccer games among misfit high-schoolers, to the most obscure nicknames and unusual mascots in college sports, the book collects memorable commentaries from Littlefield’s popular NPR sports show as well as never-before-published essays. No matter the topic, Littlefield illuminates the dark corners and unlikely angles of sports with wry good humor and a lightly worn expertise that lets nothing pass.

Rebel Land: Unraveling the Riddle of History in a Turkish Town

$12.99

An esteemed journalist travels to Turkey to investigate the legacy of the Armenian genocide and the quest for Kurdish statehood. In 2001, Christopher de Bellaigue, then the Economist’s correspondent in Istanbul, wrote a piece about the history of Turkey for The New York Review of Books. In it, he briefly discussed the killing and deportation of half a million Armenians in 1915. These massacres, he suggested, were best understood as part of the struggles that attended the end of the Ottoman empire. After the story was published, the magazine was besieged with letters. This wasn’t war, the correspondents said; it was genocide. And the death toll was not half a million but three times that many. De Bellaigue was mortified. How had he gotten it so wrong? He went back to Turkey, but found that the national archives had sealed all documents pertaining to those times. Undeterred and armed with a stack of contraband histories, he set out to the conflicted southeastern Turkish city of Varto to discover what had really happened. There, de Bellaigue found a place in which the centuries-old conflict among Turks, Armenians, and Kurds was still very much alive. His government escort began their association by marching with him arm in arm through the town’s shopping district to show his presence; the local police chief, sent by the central office in Ankara to keep an eye on the Kurds, was sure he was a spy. He found houses built from the ruins of old Armenian churches, young boys playing soccer with old skulls, and a cast of villagers who all seemed unwilling to talk. What emerges is both an intellectual detective story and a reckoning with memory and identity that brings to life the basic conflictsof the Middle East: between statehood and religion, imperial borders and ethnic identity. Combining a deeply informed view of the area’s history with the testimonials of the townspeople who slowly come to trust him, de Bellaigue unravels the enigma of the Turkish twentieth century,

Spartak Moscow: The People’s Team in the Workers’ State

$35

In the informative, entertaining, and generously illustrated Spartak Moscow, a book that will be cheered by soccer fans worldwide, Robert Edelman finds in the stands and on the pitch keys to understanding everyday life under Stalin, Khrushchev, and their successors. Millions attended matches and obsessed about their favorite club, and their rowdiness on game day stood out as a moment of relative freedom in a society that championed conformity. This was particularly the case for the supporters of Spartak, which emerged from the rough proletarian Presnia district of Moscow and spent much of its history in fierce rivalry with Dinamo, the team of the secret police. To cheer for Spartak, Edelman shows, was a small and safe way of saying “no” to the fears and absurdities of high Stalinism; to understand Spartak is to understand how soccer explains Soviet life.Champions of the Soviet Elite League twelve times and eleven-time winner of the USSR Cup, Spartak was founded and led for seven decades by the four Starostin brothers, the most visible of whom were Nikolai and Andrei. Brilliant players turned skilled entrepreneurs, they were flexible enough to constantly change their business model to accommodate the dramatic shifts in Soviet policy. Whether because of their own financial wheeling and dealing or Spartak’s too frequent success against state-sponsored teams, they were arrested in 1942 and spent twelve years in the gulag. Instead of facing hard labor and likely death, they were spared the harshness of their places of exile when they were asked by local camp commandants to coach the prisoners’ football teams. Returning from the camps after Stalin’s death, they took back the reins of a club whose mystique as the “people’s team” was only enhanced by its status as a victim of Stalinist tyranny. Edelman covers the team from its days on the wild fields of prerevolutionary Russia through the post-Soviet period. Given its history, it was hardly surprising that Spartak

Woodridge Wanderers: The Birth and Death of a Soccer Team

Woodridge Wanderers: The Birth and Death of a Soccer Team

$3.99

In this hilarious satirical fantasy a travelling circus has a gruesome road accident in which the owner and ringmaster receives a head injury that ends his career when he can no longer wear a ringmaster’s hat. Wanting to stay in the entertainment industry, he applies for and gets the position of Manager of Woodridge Wanderers, the local professional soccer team.He gets rid of all the existing players and installs his circus performers in their place, even though none had previously played competitive soccer. The performers quickly showed they posessed unique skills that lent themselves well to the game. For example, the ape trainer became a superb goalkeeper, diverting shots while swinging one-handed from the crossbar, munching bananas; and the two-headed man was irresistible when the ball was in the air. In some cases the injuries the performers had sustained provided an advantage. The tall man had lost a foot, receiving a gorilla’s foot as replacement, but one leg was now substantially shorter than the other producing an ability to turn very quickly. The unlikely group became the best soccer team in England and were universally admired but their home stadium in Woodridge was always half empty. Until one day, one of the players was evaporated in the middle of a game by what appeared to be a nuclear missile. This was a turning point for the team as the locals began to take notice. But the bizarre deaths had to continue to sustain the interest. The book follows the exploits of the team and whoever was determined to kill them off; the comical efforts of the police to find the murderer(s); the press campaign against the latest escalation in soccer crowd violence; and the socialchanges occurring in Woodridge as a result of the town’s new-found fame.
