Going Against All Odds

People in the 1940s did not believe that women could become surgeons, but a strong, determined woman was on her way to proving them wrong. Although the dean from her school of medicine warned her that no one would ever take a woman surgeon under his wing, he nonetheless agreed to draft her a letter of recommendation. The woman wonders why all of the three surgeons that took her for an interview seemed to stifle their mirth until she met the fourth interviewer who could not contain his laughter and finally read the words from the recommendation that amused him so much. During her meaningful life, she has founded an Africa-based volunteer group that helps alleviate and prevent disease and death in that country, run a laboratory on research, go around third world countries with medical relief organizations, and on top of this, she was able to do her private practice without allowing the patient’s ability to pay dictate on her service. She states that the most challenging patient cases she handled are those from the northern NYC suburban area, and this makes her learn more in her career as a reconstructive and plastic surgeon. Very early then she chose medicine already. She recounts that her father acted as if this was a normal decision in those times. These were the reasons why she had never felt a pang of discrimination towards her career neither did she ever feel discouraged to pursue her chosen field of specialty. Even way before, she was already a rarity and oddity. She seems to be biased over her time, saying it was way easier for her then than it is now for most women. She was deeply in love with animals as a young girl. Her childhood memories consisted of summers in Maine, on a tent with a couple of dogs or more. A small exclusive school for girls made her into a proper being from  her former wild wood dweller state and paved her way towards this prestigious university in New York City. But then when she goes to still, she still takes her two pet beagle pups along as well as a crow resting on her shoulder.

During medical school she married a fellow student and had two daughters before becoming the first woman surgeon to graduate from the college. Later, she was as tireless in pursuit of her specialty. Making her open up about her career and how it flourished is extremely hard. She is reluctant to address her achievements but at times, she does allude to how hard it was to balance work and a large family.

She fell in love and got married a second time to a doctor and had five kids with him but she also got his kids and adopted them. How was it growing up the child of a whirlwind who was up at 5, worked all day and was in bed reading at 1 a.m.? While her daughters have divergent views, it is clear that sometimes her work was hard for them, too. An oncologist who was one of her daughters recounted that it was ordinary for them to watch their mom at work. She did her very best to bring her work and her kids together. A huge role was to be fulfilled by her adopted daughter. She was the one they looked on to raise the younger children for she was the eldest. She was rarely at home and forcing her to become a mom is spreading her too thin already. Due to her being so dedicated to her vocation, she almost never had time for us. Whenever their mother wasn’t home, they’d blurt out the standing joke that their mother was out saving people’s lives. Yet one of her daughters shares about their mother’s inclination to fun. She would surprise her kids each time she can by bringing pompoms or megaphones to their soccer games or when there is a parade, she would sometimes read in atop a fire engine.

Two of the three sons she has have to go on regular blood transfusions since they were born with a terrible sickness known as Fanconi’s anemia which is a congenital blood problem. AIDS was an unknown disease in the world but these two kids had died from it after acquiring it from blood transfusions. These two children who were only 13 and 17 died a year apart. The night her second male son met his last breath, her husband left and around this time, her youngest girl left for college too. Even when she had so many things to do, she feels so empty and sad inside.

Everything in her life got destroyed. What caused her to go to Africa was seeing her life in fullness then and nothing now. This place mesmerized her as a child even when she has never set foot in this place before. Animal problem studies was what made her board to Kenya. The place she went to next was a medical institution known to have the highest rate of infant deaths as well as gravest cases of AIDS.

Her return also marked the founding of a nonprofit alliance that enables her to bring in medical devices, training and treatment for the poor people of Eastern Kenya.
