Why do soccer coaches focus on drills so much?
Our soccer coach makes us do all sorts of drills that seem pointless. Instead of running from cone-to-cone, why don’t we just get on the field and scrimmage?
Soccer players learn more from just playing than from repeated drills.
Do you think kids in Ghana do drills? From their young age, they play and play and play on the streets. They don’t drill. They play real soccer.
And Ghana beat the US this past summer.
So why do coaches make us do drills? Instead of wasting a 2-hour practice dribbling around cones and passing, we could do a full scrimmage so we can instinctively get a feel for the game and learn how to play without repeating drills.
Anyone agree? I know the Ghanaians do.
You do drills to work on all aspects of the game. You have to work on set pieces, such as corners and free kicks. You have to work on ball skills and heading. You have to work on stamina and speed. Scrimmages are just part of a well rounded training regime.
