A Case Of Infatuation $14.95 Crime Beat Reporter Mitch Malone’s rules are simple: He never lets the blood and guts he covers bother him. He always works alone. And he hates kids. Mitch breaks all three rules when he unwittingly agrees to smuggle a potential witness out of a suburban Michigan home while police investigate a mob-style-hit that’s left two dead bodies. Mitch sends his intern (a real hottie, but nonetheless an interloper) to interview neighbors, hoping to throw her off, but when he finds the pint-sized survivor the killer overlooked, he decides she might be helpful. When the FBI accuses him of the murder, Mitch goes into hiding with the bombshell intern who doesn’t talk and the precocious preschooler. Mitch works his contacts to regain his freedom from his roommates only to find they each hold keys to a bizarre story of disappearances, terrorists and the perfect hamburger recipe.Review Blurb:Great combination of gritty prose and sparkling dialogue along with a most intriguing and unusual plot makes W. Cork City FORAS Co-op was founded in the immediate aftermath of the winding up, and are now Cork’s sole representative in the League of Ireland. GIMP: When Life Deals You a Crappy Hand, You Can Fold–or You Can Play $0.01 College soccer star Mark Zupan had been out drinking one night and had passed out in the back of his best friend’s pickup truck when his friend got in the driver’s seat, decided to take the truck for a spin, and accidentally crashed it. Thrown into a canal and stuck in frigid water for fourteen hours, Mark was finally rescued and learned soon after that he’d broken his neck. He’d most likely be a quadriplegic and spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair, doctors told him. At first Mark’s only goal was to walk again. When that proved impossible, he fell into the depths of anger and despair, retreating from the world and the people closest to him. But love, friendship, and a new sport, quad rugby (a.k.a. “murderball”), helped Mark create a new existence that’s truly exceptional. Gimp, the no-holds-barred memoir of a Paralympic athlete and the star of the Academy Award–nominated documentary Murderball, is an inspiring, defiant, and revealing celebration of spirit and will that confounds readers’ prejudices by offering proof that a guy in a chair can still do amazing things: have sex with his girlfriend, party with his friends . . . even crowd-surf at Pearl Jam shows. |

Bironas later transferred to Georgia Southern University, where his brother was on the soccer team, for his final year of collegiate eligibility. While with the Eagles, Bironas won the 2000 NCAA Division I-AA National Championship, before returning to graduate from Auburn with a degree in marketing. The district purchased a site on Honeysuckle Hill for the price of US$1. The current building opened in 1922 as Glenbard Township High School; the first of the district’s high schools. The school was built in the style of a castle, complete with roof turrets. ‘Glenbard’ as it was originally named, was constructed in 1922, atop Honeysuckle Hill, overlooking Lake Ellyn. Built with dark red brick, the building was built with castle-like design, complete with a turret and other minor castle details. Athletics were initially played in a gymnasium built in the school building itself, but with the construction of a $12 million state of the art field house across the street, the once gym was turned into the Robert D. Elliott Library, named after one of the most influential principals in school history. Across the road from Glenbard West is Bill Duchon Field, where both football and other school sports are played such as both boys and girls soccer and track are played. Originally built in 1923, it was renamed in 1980 in honor of a former head football coach. The stadium seats up to 5,000 spectators, of which the home side overlooks Lake Ellyn. Home and Away $12.95 By the time Germany and Costa Rica kicked off the 2006 World Cup in Munich, hundreds of thousands of soccer fans from around the globe had descended on the host nation to cheer on their national sides and soak up the atmosphere. Among them were a group of New York City soccer players celebrating an anniversary of sorts. At the tail end of the 2002 World Cup, inspired by many late nights watching live matches in some of the city’s crowded bars, the group of artists, photographers, and filmmakers began meeting in lower Manhattan’s Chinatown to play soccer a few mornings a week. Only a chain link fence shielded their pitch from the cacophony and traffic of the surrounding urban chaos. As they warmed up in the chill morning air, the smell of garbage from the nearby fish markets wafted over. Their spectators included bums sleeping off hangovers on the benches next to the field and Chinese immigrants finishing up their morning Tai Chi sessions. Some of them were playing for the first time, others rediscovering skills they had honed in high school or college. Still others found an outlet for a passion they had developed in their native countries: in England and Austria, Israel and Brazil. Even in the dead of winter, the love of soccer would get them out of bed at 8 in the morning several times a week to play for an hour or so before heading off to work. It would cost them extra in cable bills at the end of the month, or for pints at the pub to watch European matches at equally trying hours on Saturday mornings. They began calling themselves the Chinatown Soccer Club and by the time the 2006 World Cup rolled around, heading to Germany didn’t just seem like a good idea, it had become a requirement. This small book of photographs, Home and Away, is a record of that trip. Shot by Gerhard Stochl, Peter Sutherland, and Kevin Trageser, photographers who have all been integral members of the Chinatown Soccer Club since |

Home on the Field: How One Championship Soccer Team Inspires Hope for the Revival of Small Town America $13.99 A Home on the Field is about faith, loyalty, and trust. It is a parable in the tradition of Stand and Deliver and Hoosiers—a story of one team and their accidental coach who became certain heroes to the whole community. For the past ten years, Siler City, North Carolina, has been at the front lines of immigration in the interior portion of the United States. Like a number of small Southern towns, workers come from traditional Latino enclaves across the United States, as well as from Latin American countries, to work in what is considered the home of industrial-scale poultry processing. At enormous risk, these people have come with the hope of a better life and a chance to realize their portion of the American Dream. But it isn’t always easy. Assimilation into the South is fraught with struggles, and in no place is this more poignant than in the schools. When Paul Cuadros packed his bags and moved south to study the impact of the burgeoning Latino community, he encountered a culture clash between the long-time residents and the newcomers that eventually boiled over into an anti-immigrant rally featuring former Klansman David Duke. It became Paul’s goal to show the growing numbers of Latino youth that their lives could be more than the cutting line at the poultry plants, that finishing high school and heading to college could be a reality. He needed to find something that the boys could commit to passionately, knowing that devotion to something bigger than them would be the key to helping the boys find where they fit in the world. The answer was soccer. But Siler City, like so many other small rural communities, was a football town, and long-time residents saw soccer as a foreign sport and yet another accommodation to the newcomers. After an uphill battle, the Jets soccer team at Jordan-Matthews High School was born. Suffering setbacks and heartbreak, the majority Latino team, in only three seasons and against all odds, |

Joseph Wambaugh and the Jay Smith Case $23.99 No reader of this book will be more surprised than was the public by the truly bizarre beliefs and benthic depths of the evil (the Supreme Court’s repeated word, evil) encountered in this longest murder investigation in Pennsylvania’s history—thirteen years. Over fifty state troopers, eighteen FBI agents, and numerous local police departments were involved as this longest investigation began when the naked body of Susan Reinert was found, obviously sexually abused, a “strap-on” sexual device lying near her corpse. Her body was found stuffed in the tire well of her Plymouth Horizon and left with the liftgate open. A midthirties female, just five feet tall, round hips that resembled a “glistening white soccer ball,” according to witnesses that passed by the open liftgate, not knowing it was a corpse. Susan Reinert was a teacher in the English department in the elite, upper-middle class, Upper Merion Senior High School, located fifteen miles north of Philadelphia. In that same English department was William Bradfield Jr. a six-foot-three, former Haverford College wrestler from a Main Line family; his father, was the vice president of Western Electric. As the head of the teachers union, Bradfield wielded power that he was not afraid to use to protect his fellow teachers and to sexually exploit those that appealed to him. He developed a small cult of three other teachers in the English department, and an eighteen-year-old beauty, prom-queen type, high school student from one his classes. The cult was called the VAMPZ, Valaitis and Pappas, males, the other three females—all three servicing Bradfield every which way a female could. Bradfield was a close friend of the famous poet Ezra Pound from whom he absorbed a weird psychological viewpoint developed by a famous Frenchman, named Remy de Gourmant. After studying corpses, de Gourmont deduced that the brain fluid was related to the semen. Ejaculation of semen produced |

Muslim Teens In: Pitfalls and Pranks $10.95 Imagine…that you are an average fifteen-year old boy in an American public high school. You study hard, play soccer, and look forward to getting your driver’s license next year along with your first job. One typical day, a blonde-haired popular cheerleader approaches you at school and wants to go on a date. Everyone’s dream, right? Except suddenly you realize that you’re not an average boy–you’re Muslim and you’re not allowed to date. But all around you–in high school, in books, on television–everyone is dating. So who do you turn to as an example? At the same time, Nur becomes convinced that her college-aged brother is becoming a fundamentalist Muslim based on some of the people he is hanging out with at the university. She gets a lesson in jumping to conclusions and stereotyping conservative Muslims as terrorists in the same way that she so adamantly speaks out against. These are just two of the many typical situations that the teenagers in this book face. There are seven main characters in the series. Ibrahim and Nur Karim are a fifteen and fourteen-year old brother and sister whose parents are Palestinian. Nadia and Ali Hussain are also fifteen and fourteen-years old. They were both born in Bosnia. The last three main characters are Khalid, Elham, and Farid AlAmery, aged sixteen, fourteen, and thirteen. They were born in Iraq but grew up in the US. The Karims and Hussains are Sunni Muslims. The AlAmerys are Shias.Author’s Note: The story takes place in Des Moines, IA, a randomly chosen city. Only the city name is real. All of the streets and businesses are completely fictional, including the description of the Islamic center and the schools. Des Moines was chosen because it represents a typical western city which is predominantly Christian but has a growing Muslim population. When one thinks of American Muslims, rarely would we think of Iowa or Nebraska, for that matter, which actually has a population of over 6,000 Muslims. About the Author |

Only a Game $16.95 It’s only a game, Bill Littlefield’s National Public Radio program tells us, trying to keep sports in perspective. And for all the deadly serious perspectives of sports commentators and fans, Littlefield’s is perhaps the most realistic. It is certainly the most entertaining. Sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, Littlefield’s take on the games people play is as refreshing as it is enlightening. From baseball Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett’s untimely death, to pickup soccer games among misfit high-schoolers, to the most obscure nicknames and unusual mascots in college sports, the book collects memorable commentaries from Littlefield’s popular NPR sports show as well as never-before-published essays. Playing Ball with the Boys: The Rise of Women in the World of Men’s Sports $0.01 Female sideline reporters are the fastest-growing trend in broadcasts of professional and college football: names like Suzy Kolber, Erin Andrews, and Andrea Kremer are now as well known as any of the men in the booth. But even more has been going on. In recent years women have garnered spots as sports columnists and reporters, talk-show hosts, and even coaches and team administrators. Yet there has never been a book about this phenomenon. Former ESPN news anchor Betsy Ross fills this gap with Playing Ball with the Boys, a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the emerging role that women play in sports broadcasting and reporting, as well as in the business of sports. The book features interviews with the legendary women’s sports activist Billie Jean King, as well as Women’s Professional Soccer League leader Tonya Antonucci and ESPN College Basketball Analyst Rebecca Lobo. Prominent women working in the media are also featured in the book, including WFAN’s Ann Ligouri, CBS’ Lesley Visser, ESPN’s Pam Ward, USA Today’s Christine Brennan and Sports Illustrated’s Selena Roberts. Playing Ball with the Boys delivers firsthand accounts of the struggles and triumphs of women succeeding in what has long been a man’s game. |
