That game should have been a wakeup call for the manager and his selection on Tuesday may give a good indication of the future of Rooney at the club.
Aston Villa may have been playing well and United not so well but Gerard Houllier is under no illusion of the task in front of his players in this midweek fixture.
With Darren Bent seeming to settle in quite well he will have to put in a good performance and hopefully for Villa fans there may be cracks in the United defence especially if Rio Ferdinand is still out with injury.
