Behind the Curtain: Travels in Eastern Europe Football

Behind the Curtain: Travels in Eastern Europe Football

$18.95

From the war-ravaged streets of Sarajevo, where turning up for training involved dodging snipers’ bullets, to the crumbling splendor of Budapest’s Bozsik Stadium, where the likes of Puskas and Kocsis masterminded the fall of England, the landscape of Eastern Europe has changed immeasurably since the fall of communism. Jonathan Wilson has traveled extensively behind the old Iron Curtain, viewing life beyond the fall of the Berlin Wall through the lens of soccer. Where once the state-controlled teams of the Eastern bloc passed their way with crisp efficiency—a sort of communist version of total soccer—to considerable success on the European and international stages, today the beautiful game in the East has been opened up to the free market, and throughout the region a sense of chaos pervades. The threat of totalitarian interference no longer remains; but in its place mafia control is generally accompanied with a crippling lack of funds. Jonathan Wilson goes in search of the spirit of Hungary’s Golden Squad of the early 1950s; charts the disintegration of the soccer superpower that was the former Yugoslavia; follows a sorry tale of corruption, mismanagement, and Armenian cognac through the Caucasuses; reopens the case of Russia’s greatest soccer player, Eduard Streltsov; and talks to Jan Tomaszewski about an autumn night at Wembley in 1973.

Athletics Bellevue has 20 varsity teams and 45 other teams that provide a range of team and individual sports. Emancipation through Muscles

Emancipation through Muscles

$34.95

Although the study of Jewish identity has generated a growing body of work, the topic of sport has received scant attention in Jewish historiography. Emancipation through Muscles redresses this balance by analyzing the pertinence of sports to such issues as race, ethnicity, and gender in Jewish history and by examining the role of modern sport within European Jewry. The accomplishments of Jews in the intellectual arena and their notable presence among Nobel Prize recipients have often overshadowed their achievements in sports. The pursuit of sports among Jews in Europe was never a marginal phenomenon, however. In the first third of the twentieth century numerous Jewish sport organizations were founded throughout Europe, and prowess in the realm called “muscle Jewry” by the Zionists was a symbol of widespread pride among European Jews. Some Jewish teams were remarkably successful: the legendary Austrian soccer champion Hakoah Vienna was arguably the most visible Jewish presence in interwar Vienna, and many readers will be surprised to learn that outstanding soccer teams such as Ajax Amsterdam and Tottenham Hotspur are still considered “Jewish teams.”The contributors to this volume, an international group of scholars from a variety of fields, explore the diverse relationships between Jews and modern sports in Europe.

Football and Fascism: The National Game under Mussolini

Football and Fascism: The National Game under Mussolini

$37.95

This is a cultural history of Italian Fascism viewed through the lens of soccer. The 1930s were the zenith of achievement for Italian football—Italy hosted and won the 1934 World Cup and retained the trophy in 1938. At club level, Calcio was reorganized into a national league, after which the first Italian club teams emerged to dominate European competition. It was at this time that Mussolini’s party institutionalized soccer as a fascist game. Italian Fascism fully exploited the opportunities football provided to shape public opinion, penetrate daily life, and reinforce conformity. By politicizing the game, Fascism also sought to enhance the regime’s international prestige and inculcate nationalist values. Football and Fascism is an original look at the appropriation of sport to serve political ends during a dark period of Italian history.

The founding meeting of the Dominion of Canada Football Association took place on May 24, 1912. The organization joined FIFA in 1913. In 1928, the FA resigned from FIFA until 1946, following the example of British associations in a dispute over broken time payments to amateur players. Excerpt: The British Home Championship (also known as the Home International Championship, the Home Internationals, the British Championship, but officially simply the International Championship) was an annual football competition contested between the United Kingdom’s four national teams, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (Ireland before its partition) from the 188384 season until the 1983-84 season. By the early 1880s, the development of football in the United Kingdom was gathering pace and the four national football teams of the UK were playing regular friendlies against each other, with nearly every team playing all the others annually. At the time, the football associations of each Home Nation (The Football Association (England), the Scottish Football Association, the Football Association of Wales and the Irish Football Association) had slightly different rules for football, and when matches were played the rules of whoever was the home team were used. While this solution was workable, it was hardly ideal. To remedy this, the four associations met in Manchester on 6 December 1882 and agreed on one uniform set of worldwide rules. They also established the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to approve changes to the rules (a task that it still performs to this day). The new rules meant that formal international competitions could now easily be devised. Thus, at the same meeting, the associations formalised the annual friendlies and the British Home Championship – the world’s first international football competition – was born. The Championship was held every football season, starting with the 18831884… More:

Excerpt: David Phillips Jones more commonly known as ‘Ponty’ Jones (10 December 1881 9 January 1936) was a Welsh international rugby union wing player who played club rugby for several teams, most notably Pontypool and London Welsh. He won a single cap for Wales in 1907. Jones was a mining surveyor by profession, and was also a classically trained harpist. A keen sportsman, he also played soccer and once had a Welsh amateur trial. During the First World War he joined the British Army and served in the South Wales Borderers. He died of pneumonia in 1936. Jones was one of four rugby playing brothers; Jack and James were capped for Wales like David, while the youngest brother Edwin played for club team, Pontypool. As the brothers had the common surname of Jones, the brothers were separated by their nicknames. James was more often known as ‘Tuan’ and David as ‘Ponty’. Jones first played rugby for his home town of Pontymoile, before being selected for first-class rugby club, Newport. He played only 11 games for the Newport senior team before joining the newly reformed Pontypool club, making his debut for the club on 7 December 1901 in a match against Ebbw Vale RFC. Jones’ career at Pontypool was extremely succussful, becoming a leading scorer over several seasons including 172 tries over his entire career. Such was Jones’ scoring record, that the left wing corner pointing to Conway Road at Pontypool’s Recreation ground, was nicknamed ‘Ponty’s Corner’. In the 1904-05 season, Jones scored 49 tries, which included six in the same game against Talywain in April 1905; a club record that stood for 98 years. Jones was made captain of Pontypool for three consecutive seasons, from 1904 to 1907; and in 1907 he was awarded his one and only internat… More:

 Sports Data Mining

Sports Data Mining

$139

Data mining is the process of extracting hidden patterns from data, and it’s commonly used in business, bioinformatics, counter-terrorism, and, increasingly, in professional sports. First popularized in Michael Lewis’ best-selling Moneyball: The Art of Winning An Unfair Game, it is has become an intrinsic part of all professional sports the world over, from baseball to cricket to soccer. While an industry has developed based on statistical analysis services for any given sport, or even for betting behavior analysis on these sports, no research-level book has considered the subject in any detail until now.Sports Data Mining brings together in one place the state of the art as it concerns an international array of sports: baseball, football, basketball, soccer, greyhound racing are all covered, and the authors (including Hsinchun Chen, one of the most esteemed and well-known experts in data mining in the world) present the latest research, developments, software available, and applications for each sport. They even examine the hidden patterns in gaming and wagering, along with the most common systems for wager analysis. A full draft TOC is attached. With combined (NFL; MLB; NBA; NHL) team values in the US running at more than $42 billion (NFL alone was at $33.3 billion in 2008!), and European soccer teams at over $10 billion, professional team sports worldwide is a massive business that is about to experience its first real contraction in over ten years. Combine that with the proven effectiveness — and growing use — of statistical analysis to produce winning teams (and thus higher revenues), and then consider the sharp growth in college programs in sports business: an eager market awaits this book in the sports business market alone. It will also appeal to researchers in data mining broadly; the sports statistics service industry that’s developed in the last ten years; and anyone studying any of the pari-mutuel

The Race to Transform: Sports in Post Apartheid South Africa

$22.4

A pioneering exploration of sports in South Africa today, this study challenges the popular idea that sporting events in the country have helped to ease racial tensions and pave the way to a common South African destiny. The contributors, a mix of activist intellectuals and sportswriters, outline the ongoing debate about sport as a means social transformation. At the center of the discussion is the popular emphasis on the international success of the national teams—South Africa won the Rugby World Cups and will host the Soccer World Cup in 2010—as well as the proposed theory that grassroots township teams are losing status as the black middle classes turn to expensive professional sports.
