soccer invites
Is club soccer the way to go?

I’m offered a spot on a pretty good club. I currently have another invite pending, but it’ll take a week or so before I’m informed with the yes or no. My offer ends in a couple of days– should I risk finding a better spot or accept it?
Thanks.
I love everyone who replied, so I won’t be choosing a best answer. That’ll be left for the people to choose.

While you got the offer accept and if you see a better offer later, grab that one as well.

 Beyond the Net

Beyond the Net

$9.99

Beyond the Net might seem like a funny title for a book about soccer, but when you think about it, soccer is about much more than scoring goals. It is about how a team works together for a common objective. This is a book that invites you to read about the private times in a soccer player s life that very few people have ever heard about. Each player in this book has a unique story, a story that he or she has offered to share, because each player was once your age. They remember how it was growing up, and all of the players in this book would like to give you the gift of their knowledge. Some of the stories are funny, some are inspiring and some are somber, but each story is important. These are the stories in their own words, of how these professional and elite soccer players followed their dreams. This book has the stories of eleven players, just like there are eleven players on the field. Each player has a key characteristic that describes him or her, that helped each become all he or she could be. Each player s characteristic can be summed up in a word, and that word is the name of the player s chapter.Because soccer has many words that are not common in everyday English, there is a glossary in the back that explains terms that might not be familiar to you. At the end of the book there is a fun quiz to see how much you have learned about each player. Throughout the book there are random facts about soccer, because random is fun! There are players in this book who are superstars on the field. There are players who are the supporting cast and there are players who you might not know, but who are well known in other countries. That is the beauty of soccer. it is a game played all over the world, from professional stadiums to a kid s backyard. It s a game of teamwork and every person on the team is integral to the team s success. So whether you are a superstar or a supporting member of the team, always remember that you are important. Without you,

When Jonathan Thomas receives a threatening letter apparently sent by an ex-girlfriend, he pursues the sender but finds himself unraveling another mystery he would have better left unsolved. FINALE tells the story of this wanderer’s journey to a faultline deep within himself. The chapters descend from eight to zero as Jonathan travels from his most recent lover to first, finally reaching zero when he leaps into the fissure that divides him. Between lovers, internal “earthquake” chapters rise in magnitude from 1.0 to 8.0.The lovers include: Mary Whitcomb, a Zelda Fitzgerald double now selling endangered turtle eggs; Azal, who forces Jonathan to visit her father’s grave wearing the dead man’s clothes; Kerrie, ex-speedfreak and comic book junky; Marnie, a future soccer mom whose seductive and very white mother has deemed herself an honorary African; Chartrise, a psychic waiting with bad tidings; Caitlin, on the way to nunhood; and Holly, who invites Jonathan and the other lovers to his “funeral.” Will the funeral startle Jonathan out of self-deception, or lead to knowledge he never should have gained?

Excerpt: Bend It Like Beckham is a 2002 drama film starring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley first released in the United Kingdom. The film was directed by Gurinder Chadha. Its title comes from the football player David Beckham and his skill at scoring from free kicks by “bending” (curving) the ball past a wall of defenders. Jesminder “Jess” Bhamra (Parminder Nagra) is the 18-year-old daughter of Punjabi Sikh immigrants living in London who work at Heathrow Airport. Juliette “Jules” Paxton (Keira Knightley) is the daughter of an English couple. Jess is infatuated with football, but because she is a woman her parents do not allow her to play. However, sometimes she plays in the park with various boys and her good friend Tony, a closet homosexual. When Jules discovers Jess’ skills, she invites Jess to try out for her local team, the Hounslow Harriers, coached by Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). He is skeptical of an Indian player joining the team, but when he discovers her skills, and that she gels instantly with Jules, he puts her on the team. Jess lies to Joe about her parents being onboard with the idea. Jess develops an attraction to Joe, and when the team travels to Hamburg Jess and Joe’s relationship develops; at the end of the night the two are about to kiss when Jules, who also has a crush on Joe, interrupts them, souring Jess and Jules’ friendship. When Jess arrives at Jules’ house to fix the friendship, Mrs. Paxton is misled and thinks that the pair are involved in a lesbian relationship. Jess’ parents learn that Jess has been playing and become more strict, ensuring she does not attend matches. Meanwh… More:

 Somebody's Gotta Say It

Somebody’s Gotta Say It

$10.99

Atlanta-based libertarian talk show host Neal Boortz absolutely refuses to be softspoken. On his popular daily diatribes, the self-proclaimed “Mouth of the South” and “High Priest of the Church of the Painful Truth” invites controversy with his unvarnished opinions about topics ranging from “government” schools (“taxpayer-funded child abuse”); socialized medicine; soccer moms and the wussification of America; and what he calls federally subsidized corruption. As in The FairTax Book, Boortz’s opinions in Somebody’s Gotta Say It are emphatic, memorable, and sometimes surprising. A treat for his many fans.

Thinking Fan’s Guide to the World Cup

$0.99

The Thinking Fan’s Guide to the World Cup features original pieces by thirty-two leading writers and journalists about the thirty-two nations that have qualified for the world’s greatest sporting event. In addition to all the essential information any fan needs—the complete 2006 match schedule, results from past tournaments, facts and figures about the nations, players, teams, and referees—here are essays that shine a whole new light on soccer and the world. Former Foreign Minister of Mexico Jorge G. Castañeda invites George W. Bush to watch a game. Novelist Robert Coover remembers soccer in Spain after the death of General Francisco Franco. Dave Eggers on America, and the gym teachers who kept it free from communism. Time magazine’s Tokyo bureau chief Jim Frederick shows how soccer is displacing baseball in Japan. Novelist Aleksandar Hemon proves, once and for all, that sex and soccer do not mix. Novelist John Lanchester describes the indescribable: the beauty of Brazilian soccer. The New Yorker’s Cressida Leyshon on Trinidad and Tobago, 750-1 underdogs. Fever Pitch author Nick Hornby on the conflicting call of club and country. Plus an afterword by Franklin Foer on the form of government most likely to win the World Cup.
