Excerpt: Phoenix from the Flames was a regular feature on the BBC/ITV show Fantasy Football League, which involved presenters David Baddiel and Frank Skinner recreating a famous moment from footballing history with one of the people involved at the time. Up the last episode of the programme, on July 3, 2004, the number of recreations had reached 84. The Loveday-King sketch (No. 68) of Fantasy World Cup was broadcast in the final programme of that series. When Fantasy Euro 2004 started, the first sketch involving David Seaman had the caption “72″ on it, and all following sketches went on from that. It’s unclear whether more sketches were broadcast in the years before, or if the makers of the programme simply got their figures wrong. The following have all been the subject of Phoenixes but the numbers in what they appeared are not known by this author. A sketch in this made-for-video special involved a NASA astronaut entering David and Frank’s flat asking for fourteen Phoenix’s to make up part of a football time capsule to shoot into space to educate extraterrestrial life forms of the game. After finding only thirteen (numbers 1, 5, 9, 2, 14, 21, 3, 10, 6, 19, 11, 15 and 20, in that order) the astronaut revealed himself to be Dave Beasant – they then went o… More:

Excerpt: Special 1 TV (formerly known as I’m on Setanta Sports) is a satirical football television programme, produced by Blue Elf Productions and Caboom Entertainment. The stars of the show are puppet caricatures of various football personalities; José Mourinho, Sven-Göran Eriksson, Wayne Rooney and Fabio Capello have been portrayed along with Mourinho. All of the characters on the programme are voiced by Irish actor, comedian and impressionist Mario Rosenstock.. Typical episodes were recorded on the day before transmission in Dublin and ran for up to six minutes length, airing weekly during coverage of Saturday evening Premier League games on Setanta Sports 1 in the UK and Ireland. Nearly all episodes appear in full on YouTube, and sections were repeated on the channel’s Monday Night show, Football Matters. On 20 August 2009, EPLTalk reported that no new episodes would be produced after Setanta’s UK operations ceased trading on 23 June 2009. The show is set to return in June 2010 for a special series on BBC Three to tie in with the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The new series will also be made available to watch on the BBC Three website. The show was originally known as I’m on Setanta Sports (a parody of rival Sky Sports’ You’re on Sky Sports phone-in programme), and featured heavy Setanta Sports branding. The final episode under the IOSS format was aired on 10 January following Setanta’s live coverage of Stoke City v Liverpool. On 17 January 2009, however, a special transition episode aired, with various characters begging the José puppet to reverse his decision to quit the …

Verbeek led Korea to a third-place finish at the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, guaranteeing them an automatic berth in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup tournament. He resigned from coaching South Korea in July 2007 after the Asian Cup, saying he needed a break from coaching for approximately five months. He was linked to coaching Australia after he said he would welcome another job in Asia and had previously been linked with the Socceroos coaching role in 2005. On 6 December 2007 it was announced that Verbeek had secured the position as Australian coach. In his first World Cup qualifier game as head coach, Verbeek led Australia to a clinical 3-0 win against Qatar at home. During a post match interview which followed the 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Qatar, Verbeek promised to sing the Australian national anthem Advance Australia Fair live on television, on the condition that the Socceroos qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
