It is a tale of ten tantalizing months of trains, planes, and automobiles, from one of the privileged few ever-present Gooners who’ve witnessed this wonderful odyssey from the terraces. As Osho points out in the foreward to this book, historically, the creative person has been all but forced to rebel against the society. But nowadays, the situation has dramatically changed. In today’s world, the ability to respond creatively to new challenges is demanded of everybody, from corporate CEOs to “soccer moms.” Those whose toolbox for dealing with life includes only what they have learned in the past from their parents and their teachers are at a distinct disadvantage both in their relationships and in their careers. Making a switch from imitative and rule-bound behavior to creative innovation and flexibility requires a profound change in our attitudes about ourselves and our capabilities.Creativity is a handbook for those who understand the need to bring more creativity, playfulness, and flexibility to their lives. It’s a manual for thinking “outside the box”-and learning to live there as well.

Avi Greenbaum is Jewish and lives in West Jerusalem. Moussa Shakir is Palestinian and lives in East Jerusalem. Both are 15 years old, live without their fathers, adore their older brothers, and belong to the same soccer club. Their lives are parallel lines: they have everything in common and nothing at all. Each is oblivious to the other’s existence. As Avi and Moussa go about their daily routines in the spring of 2006, they face reminders of the conflict that has dogged the region for the past three generations — the security wall, suicide bombings, police operations, and the looming shadow of war. Excerpt: Phoenix from the Flames was a regular feature on the BBC/ITV show Fantasy Football League, which involved presenters David Baddiel and Frank Skinner recreating a famous moment from footballing history with one of the people involved at the time. Up the last episode of the programme, on July 3, 2004, the number of recreations had reached 84. The Loveday-King sketch (No. 68) of Fantasy World Cup was broadcast in the final programme of that series. When Fantasy Euro 2004 started, the first sketch involving David Seaman had the caption “72″ on it, and all following sketches went on from that. It’s unclear whether more sketches were broadcast in the years before, or if the makers of the programme simply got their figures wrong. The following have all been the subject of Phoenixes but the numbers in what they appeared are not known by this author. After finding only thirteen (numbers 1, 5, 9, 2, 14, 21, 3, 10, 6, 19, 11, 15 and 20, in that order) the astronaut revealed himself to be Dave Beasant – they then went o… More:

For You Are a Kenyan Child

$16.95

Imagine you live in a small Kenyan village, where the sun rises over tall trees filled with doves. You wake to the sound of a rooster’s crow, instead of an alarm clock and the school bus. Your afternoon snack is a tasty bug plucked from the sky, instead of an apple. And rather than kicking a soccer ball across a field, you kick a homemade ball of rags down a dusty road. But despite this, things aren’t that different for a Kenyan child than they would be for an American kid, are they? With so much going on around you, it’s just as easy to forget what your mama asked you to do!

Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star

Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star

$19.22

What do Postman Pat, Tommy Cooper, Norman Wisdom, and George Best have in common with being abandoned in a Costa Rican jungle after a severe bout of flatulence? Indeed how are they connected to trying to buy an Australian brewery just to get a beer, owning twenty-two cars, an American soccer team, and Swiss mail-order pornography? I suppose we have to come clean and volunteer the name of a certain keyboard genius called Mr. Richard Wakeman. That said, you’ll then not be surprised that this second volume of wondrous stories elaborates on violinists falling out of trees, being mauled on live TV by a German shepherd, playing golf with kangaroos, amputations sound-tracked by prog rock classics, a concert played to a solitary canine, and signing autographs on the toilet. The Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star takes you, oh privileged reader, on a trip of absurd excess, a cultural car crash of side-splitting hilarity, and an unforgettable glimpse into the life of one of Britain’s most legendary showmen, rock stars, and all-time great raconteurs.

After their arrival and a round of ‘hugs’ and ‘kisses’ it isn’t long before the grandchildren plead, “Grandma or Grandpa, tell us a story.” Most grandparents resort to telling stories that the children have already heard many times before.Author Gidge Dreher has come up with a new twist – developing stories while traveling. Geese standing on playground equipment, a misplaced and forgotten soccer ball in a field, a scruffy cat entertaining his caretaker, and a cow gyrating in a peculiar fashion coupled with a vivid childhood imagination and mysterious intrigue becomes beautiful children’s story.

By the time Germany and Costa Rica kicked off the 2006 World Cup in Munich, hundreds of thousands of soccer fans from around the globe had descended on the host nation to cheer on their national sides and soak up the atmosphere. Among them were a group of New York City soccer players celebrating an anniversary of sorts. At the tail end of the 2002 World Cup, inspired by many late nights watching live matches in some of the city’s crowded bars, the group of artists, photographers, and filmmakers began meeting in lower Manhattan’s Chinatown to play soccer a few mornings a week. Only a chain link fence shielded their pitch from the cacophony and traffic of the surrounding urban chaos. As they warmed up in the chill morning air, the smell of garbage from the nearby fish markets wafted over. Their spectators included bums sleeping off hangovers on the benches next to the field and Chinese immigrants finishing up their morning Tai Chi sessions. Some of them were playing for the first time, others rediscovering skills they had honed in high school or college. Still others found an outlet for a passion they had developed in their native countries: in England and Austria, Israel and Brazil. Even in the dead of winter, the love of soccer would get them out of bed at 8 in the morning several times a week to play for an hour or so before heading off to work. It would cost them extra in cable bills at the end of the month, or for pints at the pub to watch European matches at equally trying hours on Saturday mornings. They began calling themselves the Chinatown Soccer Club and by the time the 2006 World Cup rolled around, heading to Germany didn’t just seem like a good idea, it had become a requirement. This small book of photographs, Home and Away, is a record of that trip. Shot by Gerhard Stochl, Peter Sutherland, and Kevin Trageser, photographers who have all been integral members of the Chinatown Soccer Club since

England has singularly failed to make any impact at either the World Cup or the European Championships for more than 40 years—this book explains why, with the help of exclusive interviews with players, managers, and commentators There have been 20 major international soccer tournaments since that Saturday in July 1966 when Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup trophy for England. As each of these competitions has come around, a wave of expectation in the country has been followed, with seeming inevitability, by disappointment just weeks later. But with just three semi-final appearances to show for more than 40 years of effort and pain, why does England—as a team and as a nation—continue to believe that it has an almost divine right to succeed in international soccer? Tracing the fortunes of 10 England managers—Ramsey, Revie, Greenwood, Robson, Taylor, Venables, Hoddle, Eriksson, McLaren, and Capello—this book shows just why the England team has struggled to live with the weight of expectation. Full of dramatic on-field action and dressing room gossip, it vividly recreates the highs and lows, the agony and ecstacy, the close calls and the humiliations, and pinpoints precisely why things have always gone so badly wrong.

Known within her family for being an aimless, impulsive trouble-magnet, Lily finally decides she may as well live up to her reputation: she elopes with new beau and would-be rock star Ted Dayton. But just as quickly as his band skyrockets, Lily’s marriage crashes and burns. When news of her ex’s new love with sultry and silicone-enhanced actress Melanie Slate hits the tabloids, she flees the country. Hello, London! Across the pond, Lily shares a flat with an old flame — a commitment-phobic doctor who convinces her that the best prescription for her broken heart is volunteering at the local hospital. Turns out, he’s right, as one of the patients, famed soccer star Sean Gates, takes more than a passing interest in Lily’s quirky style. But things get complicated when her ex’s band starts flying up the British charts. Ted comes to town, the paparazzi camp on her doorstep, and her new fling and old flame both find rumors that Lily and her ex are planning a little reunion tour rather troublesome. Is there a happily ever after at the end of this rocky road?

With women making up only 14 percent of Congress and eight women CEOs in the entire group of Fortune 500 companies, women’s collective voices are clearly underrepresented. Nor are they proportionately present on the airwaves or the op-ed pages of the country’s newspapers. This book helps right that imbalance by giving women a platform for voicing their opinions, priorities, hopes, and ideas for change. The book includes short experiences, stories, thoughts, and meditations written and shared by women around the world. Authors, celebrities, experts, and politicians are included, along with soccer moms and teenage girls, creating a work that is humorous, moving, questioning, opinionated, warm, and informative as it examines what women would choose if they had a chance to participate in ruling the world. To the millions unable to get to their teams’ games on Saturday afternoons, the next best thing is undoubtedly the pleasurable company of Jeff and the Sky Sports videprinter for a cozy marathon on the sofa. If someone’s got to reveal that your beloved team have just gone 3–0 down away from home and had a man sent off, it’s best if it’s consummate professional Jeff who breaks the news to you. Avid Hartlepool fan Jeff knows our pain and shares our joy . . . but mostly he knows our pain. The long-time host of SkySports’ iconic Soccer Saturday show has become a cult figure, universally admired for his encyclopedic knowledge of the game, his genuine and unlimited enthusiasm for ALL levels of soccer, and his wicked sense of humor which makes the six-hour long show simply whiz by. Excerpt: The Spectrum, formerly known as the CoreStates Spectrum (19961998), First Union Spectrum (19982003), and Wachovia Spectrum (since 2003) is a now-closed indoor arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It opened in the Fall of 1967 as part of what came to be known as the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, it eventually seated 18,136 for basketball and 17,380 for ice hockey, Arena football, indoor soccer, and indoor lacrosse after several expansions of its seating capacity. The building was formally closed on October 31, 2009, after a four-night concert stand by Pearl Jam. It is planned that the arena will eventually be razed to make way for a hotel in the Philly Live! complex. Opened as “The Spectrum” in fall 1967, Philadelphia’s first modern indoor sports arena was built to be the home of the expansion Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL, and also to accommodate the existing Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA. The building was the second major sports facility built at the south end of Broad Street in an area previously known as “East League Island Park” and now referred to simply as the “South Philadelphia Sports Complex.” Ground was broken on the arena on June 1, 1966, by Jerry Wolman and then-Philadelphia Mayor James Tate. Construction was finished in 16 months at a cost of $7 million. The first event at the arena was the Quaker City Jazz Festival on September 30, 1967, produced by Larry Magid. The 76ers moved there from Convention Hall. Lou Scheinfeld, former President of the Spectrum, explained that the name “Spectrum” was selected to evoke the broad range of events to be held there. “The ‘SP’ for ‘sports’ and ‘South Philadelphia,’ ‘E’ for ‘entertainment,’ ‘C’ for ‘circuses,’ ‘T’ for ‘theatricals,’ ‘R’ for ‘recreation,’ and ‘UM’ as ‘um, what a nice buil… More:

 Playing the Moldovans at Tennis

Playing the Moldovans at Tennis

$16.99

It doesn’t take much – “£100 is usually sufficient” – to persuade Tony Hawks to take off on notoriously bizarre and hilarious adventures in response to a bet. And so it is, that one afternoon in Balham, a pointless argument with a friend concludes in a bet – that Tony can’t beat all eleven members of the Moldovan soccer team at tennis. As natural sportsmen, Tony’s friend argues, they will beat Tony easily. “One of them,” he reasons, “is bound to be very good.” And with the loser of the bet agreeing to strip naked on Balham High Road and sing the Moldovan national anthem, this one was just too good to resist. And so this was how Tony found himself embarking on an extraordinary quest which would see him travel from England to Moldova to Transnistria, Northern Ireland, and eventually to Israel, in an attempt to get Moldovan football players on to the tennis court. The ensuing unpredictable and often hilarious adventure sees him being taken in by Moldovan gypsies and narrowly avoid kidnap in Transnistria. It sees him smuggle his way on to the Moldovan National Team coach in Coleraine and witness (almost) divine intervention in the Holy Land. And in the end, someone will strip down outside Woolworth’s on Balham High Road. In this inspiring and exceptionally funny book, Tony Hawks has done it again, proving against all odds that there is no reason in the world why you can’t do something a bit stupid and prove all of your doubters wrong. Or at least that was the idea…. Author Biography: TONY HAWKS is a London-based writer and comedian who makes regular appearances on British TV and radio. Playing the Moldovans at Tennis is his second book, and if you have not already done so, he strongly urges you to buy his first book Round Ireland With a Fridge, a surreal adventure prompted by a £100 bet. Unlike most authors, Tony has singularly failed to settle down and live in the country with a wife and four children. This,

Surviving Sexual Brokenness: What Grace Can Do

Surviving Sexual Brokenness: What Grace Can Do

$9.99

A man with his wife at the table on the other side of the restaurant is polite but distracted. A woman at work stares out her office window with a blank expression, her mind far away. A father wraps his arm around his daughter in the church pew; his eyes are on the pulpit, but his mind wanders. What about the college student on the soccer field or in the library? The doctor prepping for surgery? The realtor showing the house next door? The mailman on your front porch. Your Sunday school teacher . . . perhaps even your preacher. These people may be dominated by some form of sexual brokenness, from pornography to adultery to unwanted homosexual temptation. They share a secret they hope and pray will never be revealed. The urge to “act out” in their brokenness is destroying them because it conflicts with a life they have already chosen. They don’t know how to live with it; they don’t know how to be rid of it. They may not know what caused it; they only want to “cure” it. “Am I just a misplaced homosexual?” “Did God make me this way?” “Why won’t He change me?” Surrounding them are the ones who sense something is amiss but have no clue what to do or where to find help. They may be confused by the teachings of the church: love the sinner; hate the sin. This seemingly Biblical response can actually send the message to the struggler that he is, in fact, unlovable because his identity seems inseparable from his sin. Surviving Sexual Brokenness examines the roots and the roadblocks and provides understanding, encouragement, hope and help through Biblical truth and Christian compassion for the freedom-seeker and those who travel alongside.

The Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star

The Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star

$16.95

Adapted from the hugely popular board game, this interactive and completely engaging book serves up hundreds of bizarre, embarrassing, sometimes ethical and sometimes stomach-churning dilemmas that kids will love to pose to their friends and siblings, whether in the backseat, on a sleepover, at a party, on a rainy day, or during a lull in the lunchroom (if you dare).Ponder the icky: Would you rather eat 10 pounds of cheese-OR-a bucket of peanut butter—with nothing to drink?
