Quick, Before The Music Stops: How Ballroom Dancing Saved My Life

Quick, Before The Music Stops: How Ballroom Dancing Saved My Life

$11.99

“I’ve been dancing steadily since that Valentine’s Day. I have taken countless lessons and classes, passed a professional certification exam, done several shows and a competition—yes, dressed in those outrageous gowns and false eyelashes—and then gone back home to the kids, the soccer, the housework, and to work the next day. It hasn’t been easy to make room in the schedule for my passion, but I have done it, because I’m certain now that it is necessary for life. This new period is rich—as rich in some ways as having my two children because it has been a kind of birth—but it has also been extraordinarily painful thanks to the self-examination that dancing has provoked in me. And so, because of dance, I can say, unequivocally and gratefully, that I am alive at last.” – From Quick, Before the Music Stops“There is no time for regret in dance. You have only now, this moment, for your performance, your glorious movement. Whatever you’re going to do, do it now, quick, before the music stops.” – Janet CarlsonIn her twenties, Janet Carlson was a successful competitive ballroom dancer, but she abandoned dancing to raise a family and pursue a more conventional profession as an editor for a luxury lifestyle magazine. Twenty years later, she seemed to have it all: two beautiful daughters, a glamorous job, and a handsome, talented husband. Despite all of her successes, she felt a terrible void – her marriage was deeply troubled, and she was somehow withdrawn in the very midst of her own life and the lives of her children. Then, one Valentine’s Day, her husband gave her ballroom dancing lessons as a gift, and everything changed. She discovered the joy, passion, and confidence she hadn’t realized had gone missing for so long. Over time, Janet discovers that ballroom dancing also contains the secrets to life and love: the

Revolution in the Bleachers: How Parents Can Take Back Family in a World Gone Crazy Over Youth Sports

Revolution in the Bleachers: How Parents Can Take Back Family in a World Gone Crazy Over Youth Sports

$5.99

A journalist and mother of two athletic kids exposes the physical and emotional dangers of our over-the-top youth sports culture—and offers practical solutions for positive change. A decade ago, Joan Ryan’s exposé, Little Girls in Pretty Boxes, changed the way we look at elite sports, namely figure skating and gymnastics. Today, there is another crisis in youth sports. It may affect any child, from the kindergartner on the soccer field to the high school athlete competing for scarce scholarship money. Regan McMahon’s Revolution in the Bleachers is a wake-up call for parents who spend their lives shuttling their kids from one field and practice to the next and wonder what happened to family life. • Have late weeknight practices made family meals a thing of the past?• Do you spend hours in the car each week, driving to games across town (or across the state)?• Do you worry that your kids will miss out (on competitive experiences, college scholarships, and other advantages) if they do not specialize in one sport early on?• Do you feel pressured to have your kids join elite club teams with steep fees and demanding travel schedules?• Do your kids get repetitive stress injuries that necessitate trips to orthopedic surgeons or physical therapists?• Do you miss your non-sports-related vacations as a family? If so, the good news is, you are not alone. Other parents and kids (and even some coaches) are on your side. And you have a choice. Regan McMahon’s book began as a cover story for the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine. Titled “How Much is Too Much?” it got a tremendous response. Finally, someone had dared to say what many parents were thinking! Parents, kids and coaches responded, prompting McMahon to criss-cross the country, doing interviews and research to find out how deep the problem goes and how to fix it. In Revolution in the Bleachers, McMahon traces the

Teens today are busier than any previous generation in history. Between soccer practice, study groups, music lessons, dance or karate class, constant texting and social networking, and occasional schoolwork, it’s amazing kids have time to breathe, much less connect with God in a meaningful way. Yet without daily one-on-one time with their heavenly Father, spiritual growth is stunted. Now youth leaders can help the teens in their group prioritize prayer and quiet time. Uncommon: Prayer and the Devotional Life, part of a series of high school group studies and resources developed by youth ministry veteran Jim Burns, gives leaders a roadmap for guiding their group toward daily connection with God. Using these action-packed, fun activities and insightful tips for deepening dialog, youth pastors will have their teens sharing the ups and downs of their spiritual lives in no time. JIM BURNS, PH.D., President of HomeWord, is the host of HomeWord with Jim Burns, which features daily and weekly radio programs.
