Liga BBVA – Barcelona receives Sevilla before traveling to Denmark
This has been a very hectic week for Barcelona with the Copa del Rey game against Ceuta, which was won 0-2, and this Saturday they will receive Sevilla, to then travel to Denmark for UEFA Champions League’s leg 4 match.
Barcelona’s debut in the Copa del Rey has been promissory and very comforting taking into consideration that it was played with many reserves as starters. It has also been helpful, as it gave some extra time to the usual starters to improve their physical condition for this November with brings such key games like Real Madrid on Week 13. The player that benefits the most from this week is Xavi, who has been suffering chronic pain in his Achilles tendon since the beginning of the season, and is now beginning to show some progress towards his recuperation.
While the starters stayed in Barcelona training, the reserves did their best to show coach Guardiola that he can count with them whenever the team needs it, and that he can be confident that they will meet the expectations. The club is really proud of promoting their minor league players to the first team, and this philosophy has given wonderful results in the past decade, where they have seen their youngster transform into stars that are revolutionizing today’s football. So when you see names such Batra or Fontas in the starting line up, there is no reason to panic and think that Barcelona isn’t taking things seriously, because they are very serious when it comes to picture the next Puyol or Pique in these players.
The game against Ceuta was easily won 0-2, with goals from Maxwell and Pedro in the first half. Goalkeeper Pinto had a calmed night in Alfonso Murube stadium, home of the Second B Division team. This was the only competition of the four –Recopa de Espana, Liga, Champions League, Copa del Rey- that Barcelona has to dispute this season where the team had not made its debut. The last time that they had won this tournament was during 2008/09 season, when they defeated Athletic de Bilbao 4-1.
The first trophy that Barcelona disputed this season was against Sevilla -which happens to be this Saturday’s rival- for the Recopa de Espana. Barcelona lost the first of the two game final 3-1, and then came from behind with a 4-0 at home. But this game will be different from that one, since Sevilla have a new coach, Manzano, who came to replace Alvarez after a series of bad results in European competitions early in the season.
The good news for Sevilla is that Barcelona has been a little bit irregular this early season in their home games, as they have lost one and tied two from the 7 that have been disputed. Those unexpected results are the reason why they are one point away from Real Madrid (20), leader of the Liga BBVA.
After their match versus Sevilla, Messi and company will be traveling to Denmark for UEFA Champions League action, returning last week’s visit to Copenhagen for Leg 4 of Group D.
