The recent clarification of the offside rule is equivalent to a rule change. This book explains it. Budding Soccer Stars is written to share a passion for a game played all round the world. The author has cut his teeth in recreational and competitive leagues. He is a team captain and an accredited referee. The teeth are close to the candy. Any player, six to thirteen years old, wanting to catch up with latest developments or wanting to understand the position the coach has put her/him in, will find something here. There is more too, including a peek at international competition for future stars; but there will be little for a player that does not have fun, like we have had in playing and in writing this book for you.

Excerpt: The 2006 Italian football scandal (Italian: Calciopoli, Farsopoli or Moggiopoli , sometimes referred to as Calciocaos) involved Italy’s top professional football leagues, Serie A and Serie B. The scandal was uncovered in May 2006 by Italian police, implicating league champions Juventus, and other major teams including, Internazionale Milan, Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio, and Reggina when a number of telephone interceptions showed a thick network of relations between team managers and referee organisations. Juventus were the champions of Serie A at the time. The teams have been accused of rigging games by selecting favourable referees. The scandal first came to light as a consequence of investigations of Naples prosecutors on the Italian football agency GEA World. Transcripts of recorded telephone conversations published in Italian newspapers suggested that during the 2004-05 season, Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi had conversations with several officials of Italian football to influence referee appointment. The name Calciopoli is a pun on Tangentopoli, , a corruption-based attitude starting in the early 80s and ending with the Mani Pulite investigation in the early 90s. Another very common name for Calciopoli is Moggiopoli after the name of Luciano Moggi. Also Calciogate, a pun on Watergate, is used. “Calcio” means football in Italian. On 4 July 2006, the Italian Football Federation’s prosecutor, Stefano Palazzi, called for all four clubs at the centre of the match-fixing scandal to be thrown out of Serie A. Palazzi called for Juventus to drop to at least Serie C1 (his statement read that Juventus should be sent “lower than Serie B”, without a specific division stated) and for Fiorentina and Lazio to at least Serie B. He also asked for poi… More:

Excerpt: There were disturbances before and after two international association football matches between Egypt and Algeria in November 2009, leading to diplomatic tensions between Egypt, Algeria, and Sudan. The matches were in Group C in the CAF section of the qualifying competition for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The first match, the final scheduled match in Group C, took place in Cairo on 14 November, with Egypt winning 2 0. The result left Egypt and Algeria tied for first place in Group C, necessitating a playoff match in a neutral country. This took place in Omdurman , Sudan on 18 November, with Algeria winning 1 0 and thus qualifying for the World Cup final tournament in South Africa in June 2010. Rivalry The countries are both in North Africa , and football matches between them are fiercely-contested local derbies . Although both have long been among Africa’s stronger sides, each had experienced a long drought without World Cup qualification: Algeria since 1986 and Egypt since 1990. In 1989, Egypt beat Algeria in a decisive qualifying match for the 1990 World Cup. Player Ayman Younis later said, “It was a battle, not a football match.” Algerians felt the Tunisian referee was biased; fans rioted in the stands and players in the tunnel. An Algerian player attacked an Egyptian fan. Algeria’s Lakhdar Belloumi

Excerpt: Anthony Buttimer (known as the “Jersey Referee”) is an Irish FIFA-level soccer referee from Cork. An experienced League of Ireland official, he took charge of the 2008 FAI Cup Final in the RDS, Dublin. Buttimer earned his nickname after a number of colourful incidents preceding and during FAI eircom League matches involving various team kits, one incident of which led to legal threats by the kit supplier of Sligo Rovers. He is one of the most hated referees in Irish football and is widely regarded by many fans as incompetent and regularly has to be provided with additional security at games. He is currently rumoured to be under investigation by the FAI due to the number of complaints received in season 2009 from supporters, managers and the media and may be been cited as a result. Buttimer regularly referees matches in the League of Ireland where he has been accused of being “the main attraction of the night” by Sligo Rovers manager Paul Cook. In the past he has been dispatched to referee local derbies including the Connacht Derby contested between Sligo Rovers and Galway United in August 2007.. Buttimer is best known for having difficulties determining the colours of team kits and managerial suits. At Oriel Park on 23 September 2007, he almost postponed Dundalk’s league game against Shelbourne after taking issue with the colour of the goalkeeper’s jerseys. Buttimer was said to be “unsatisfied” with four colours provided by Dundalk – blue, black, yellow and grey all causing some unspecified problem or other. A Shelbourne director left the ground to search for an alternative kit in the local Lifestyle Sports, as managers John Gill and Dermot Keely told the referee they were on the verge of “going for a pint”. Buttimer suggested both goalkeepe… More:

Seeing Red

$9.99

A Premier League and international referee with 26 years of combined experience, Graham Poll handled some of the toughest games in soccer history—in total more than 1,500 matches—before his retirement in 2007. In this brilliant, no-holds-barred autobiography, Poll reveals what really goes on between the players in the tunnel before a match and in the dressing room after, and unveils the true nature behind the nicest and the nastiest figures in the game. Poll also shares private conversations with the likes of Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Sepp Blatter, and Steve McClaren, and the inside story behind controversial incidents involving Roy Keane, David Beckham, Patrick Vieira, and current England captain John Terry, among others. The infamous 2006 World Cup match—during which he failed to send off a Croatian player after he earned three yellow cards—that brought Poll home early in disgrace and nearly ruined his career is covered as well. Honest and eye-opening, this is a gripping behind the scenes look from one of the beautiful game’s most noted figures.

Soccer Stories: Anecdotes, Oddities, Lore, and Amazing Feats

$24.95

Arguably the world’s most popular sport, soccer has its own colorful lore, still little known in a nation only now beginning to give the game its due. This book offers the perfect opportunity to catch up on soccer’s rich history—and to discover some of the funniest, most ironic, outlandish, and tragic stories ever to come out of the world of sports. Taking readers as far afield as the Faeroe Islands, Thailand, Madagascar, Belarus, Bhutan, and the North Pole, the selections in Soccer Stories range from the strange (Brazilian players paid in cattle by their cash-strapped club) to the wild (the Mexican prison warden who threw open all the cell doors in celebration of a World Cup victory) to the comical (the referee who ejected himself). Here is the plane crash that wiped out the Italian team on the eve of its fifth straight national championship; the spiteful African club that scored 149 goals against itself in one game; and the youngster who banked a shot into the goal off a passing seagull. As lively as it is informative, Soccer Stories will engage fans of all levels.
