The first set of Laws is drafted, based mainly on the Cambridge University Rules . The purpose is to regulate English football under a single code of rules, but the rugby football clubs do not join because of the ball handling issue. Their attempt at compromise between the “dribbling” and “handling” codes is rejected by the dribblers and so rugby football becomes in time an entirely separate sport. The FA rules establish association football (aka football or “soccer”) as a distinct sport. item Apart from their main purpose of introducing standard rules of play and procedure, the Laws seek to differentiate between association football and rugby football. The essential difference in the two codes is encapsulated in Laws 9 and 11 which state that no (outfield) player shall run with the ball (in his hands) and that no (outfield) player shall throw the ball or pass it to another with his hands. The Laws will be amended later to clarify the situation at throw ins and during possession by goalkeepers but the FA is emphatic from the start that “hand ball” is illegal during normal play. item These Laws are originally known as the “London Rules” because they are only adopted by some London clubs and hardly anywhere else. Several clubs existed in Sheffield at the time and they played to the socalled Sheffield Rules . Gradually the FA, led by Charles Alcock , manages to persuade the clubs that a uniform set of rules is desirable and, after many adaptations and compromises, the FA rules eventually become standard. item The rejection of |

International Football (Soccer) Competitions Hosted By Northern Ireland $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Milk Cup, British Home Championship, 2005 Uefa European Under-19 Football Championship, Victory Shield, Foyle Cup. Excerpt: The British Home Championship (also known as the Home International Championship, the Home Internationals, the British Championship, but officially simply the International Championship) was an annual football competition contested between the United Kingdom’s four national teams, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (Ireland before its partition) from the 188384 season until the 1983-84 season. By the early 1880s, the development of football in the United Kingdom was gathering pace and the four national football teams of the UK were playing regular friendlies against each other, with nearly every team playing all the others annually. At the time, the football associations of each Home Nation (The Football Association (England), the Scottish Football Association, the Football Association of Wales and the Irish Football Association) had slightly different rules for football, and when matches were played the rules of whoever was the home team were used. While this solution was workable, it was hardly ideal. To remedy this, the four associations met in Manchester on 6 December 1882 and agreed on one uniform set of worldwide rules. They also established the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to approve changes to the rules (a task that it still performs to this day). The new rules meant that formal international competitions could now easily be devised. Thus, at the same meeting, the associations formalised the annual friendlies and the British Home Championship – the world’s first international football competition – was born. The Championship was held every football season, starting with the 18831884… More: |

Oldest Football Clubs $42 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Oldest football clubs refers to the football clubs in all codes that are the earliest known to have been established. The history of their formation is of interest to sport historians in tracing the origins of the modern codes of football from casual pastime to early organised competition and mainstream sport. Many early clubs did not use the word “football” in their name. Although the terms “football club” and “FC” are now strongly associated with association football (aka soccer), early rugby clubs also referred to themselves, or continue to refer to themselves, as simply a “football club”, or as a “Rugby Football Club”. Similarly, most Australian rules football teams also refer to themselves as football clubs. The title of the world’s oldest football club, or the oldest club in a particular country, is often disputed, or is claimed by several different clubs, across several different codes of football. |

While the other dads dye their hair brown to cover the gray, Jim occasionally dyes his blue or green. He makes his daughters’ lunches, kisses their boo-boos, and tucks them in at night—and then goes into the garage and plays Black Flag and Minor Threat songs at a criminal volume. He pays his taxes, votes in all the presidential and gubernatorial elections, serves on jury duty, and reserves the right to believe that there is a vast Right Wing Conspiracy—and that the head of the P.T.A. is possibly in on it. He is a Punk Rock Dad. |

That city-girl is Rebecca Woolf, who at 23, after the “holy shit, I’m pregnant” realization, decides to keep the baby, marry the boyfriend (in Vegas no less), and figure out how to wed her rock n’ roll lifestyle and impending motherhood. With humor, honesty, and renegade insight, Rebecca makes the transition from life as an odd-job doing commitment-phobic, chain-smoking, irresponsible party-girl to life as a work-at-home mother with a different kind of social life. Throughout, Rebecca doesn’t relinquish the token qualities of her free-spirited, pre-baby self; rebelling against both the “soccer mom,” and “young mother” stereotypes, challenging herself to grow up without outgrowing her dreams, and most importantly embracing motherhood without a map.Rockabye explores the coming together of mother and son and their mutual coming of age. It is best known for being the second oldest sports league to form, behind Major League Baseball in 1876, as well as being the oldest soccer league in the United States . The Association was formed in 1884 in an attempt to standardize rules and procedures. It was allied with The Football Association , becoming a member on February 22, 1909 at an FA meeting chaired by John Charles Clegg , and drew on that organization’s approach to the game. As part of its efforts, the AFA directly organized both league and cup competitions as well as overseeing the operations of member leagues. In 1884, it established the American Cup , which for several decades was the highest competitive soccer competition in the United States. The weakness of the AFA lay in its refusal to expand outside of the southern New England region. Taking the Field: Women, Men and Sports $22.5 In the past, when sport simply excluded girls, the equation of males with active athletic power and of females with weakness and passivity seemed to come easily, almost naturally. Now, however, with girls’ and women’s dramatic movement into sport, the process of exclusion has become a bit subtler, a bit more complicated-and yet, as Michael Messner shows us in this provocative book, no less effective. In Taking the Field, Messner argues that despite profound changes, the world of sport largely retains and continues its longtime conservative role in gender relations. To explore the current paradoxes of gender in sport, Messner identifies and investigates three levels at which the “center” of sport is constructed: the day-to-day practices of sport participants, the structured rules and hierarchies of sport institutions, and the dominant symbols and belief systems transmitted by the major sports media. Using these insights, he analyzes a moment of gender construction in the lives of four- and five-year-old children at a soccer opening ceremony, the way men’s violence is expressed through sport, the interplay of financial interests and dominant men’s investment in maintaining the status quo in the face of recent challenges, and the cultural imagery at the core of sport, particularly televised sports. Through these examinations Messner lays bare the practices and ideas that buttress-as well as those that seek to disrupt-the masculine center of sport. Taking the Field exposes the subtle and not-so-subtle ways in which men and women collectively construct gender through their interactions-interactions contextualized in the institutions and symbols of sport. Michael A. Messner is professor of sociology and gender studies at the University of Southern California. His previous books include Power at Play: Sports and the Problem of Masculinity (1995) and Politics of Masculinities: Men in Movements (1997). |

That’s Not How You Play Soccer, Daddy! $15.95 “Grab a ball!” Coach calls. “It’s time to play soccer!” Mikey is the super-competitive young captain of the Hot Diggedy Diner soccer team. He works hard, even if his teammates are easily distracted by anthill investigations and turning themselves into whirlybirds. Determined, Mikey repeatedly charges down the field, dribbling the ball to the goal posts, rat-a-tat-tack-ing the ball. After a tough practice, Mikey’s dad and dog Socks take him to lunch in the park, but Mikey only wants to practice for the Big Game. Daddy offers to help, but to Mikey’s dismay Daddy doesn’t put in much of an athletic effort. He keeps bending the rules and telling his impatient son to “just have fun.” After an irresistible ticklefest, however, Mikey finally comes around to Daddy’s way of thinking—and joins him and Socks in the worst, best soccer game ever!Author Sherry Shahan contrasts the excitement and fast-paced action of soccer with the simple, easy-going fun of “just fooling around” to show young readers that there is more than one way for kids to play—and enjoy—the game. Illustrator Tatjana Mai-Wyss’s exuberant and whimsical watercolor illustrations reflect the characters’ winning personalities and the upbeat spirit of the story. |

The 24-Hour Customer: New Rules for Winning in a Time-Starved, Always-Connected Economy $0.99 Time is not money. Time is more important than money. Today’s customers are overwhelmed, overworked, and overstressed, and it seems that everyone—from CEOs to soccer moms—is short on time and inundated with information. As a result, despite the availability of 24/7 commerce and countless ways of engaging people in our multiscreen (mobile, TV, and PC) economy, companies find it more difficult than ever to claim even a fraction of the 1,440 minutes in their customers’ precious 24 hours. In The 24-Hour Customer, Adrian C. Ott, CEO of a successful Silicon Valley consultancy, argues that companies need to strategically harness the ebbs and flows of customer time and attention in order to win in today’s competitive landscape. She explores the economics of time and attention, including why customers will devote hours addicted to social networks, yet will say “I have no time!” to other offerings. Based on extensive research and real-world results with market-leading companies, this book provides tools, such as Time-Value Tradeoffs and Time-ographics, that pinpoint opportunities to increase revenue and gain market traction. Filled with fascinating case studies from companies like Johnson & Johnson, Amazon, and iPhone app start-ups, The 24-Hour Customer offers fresh ideas for capitalizing on the elements of time, attention, and value to innovate never-before-considered products, services, and programs for today’s Über-connected, multitasking customer. Readers will discover how: Zipcar utilized time-slicing to redefine automobile ownership and grew by 70 percent, while the auto industry struggled in 2009; Netflix, Hulu, and others time-shifted to movies on-demand, ultimately restructuring the entertainment industry;P&G leveraged inattention by enabling habit-formation for some of its most successful brands.
