While she mostly sticks to fashionable pearls, First Lady Michelle Obama isn’t above adding a little diamond sparkle to her jewellery fashion if the occasion calls for it. All jewellery choices are in good taste when it comes to this First Lady’s wardrobe.
Michelle Obama wears the same understated jewellery almost any woman would be proud to own. Her pieces are usually small and sentimental: a dog tag pendant engraved with the word “Hope,” which was the by-word for the entire Obama campaign; the perennial diamond stud earrings in several versions, from simple studs to subtle drops. She’s a classy version of America’s mom in so many ways.
She trotted out a stunning pair of diamond-encrusted earrings for Election Night celebration, though. Her designer diamond dangles were rumoured to cost $11,000, but for a once-in-a-lifetime event such as your husband’s election to the presidency of the United States, that’s a reasonable splurge.
Michelle Obama’s election-night diamond beauties were 18-carat white gold, triple dangle earrings. The metal shapes-pear, oval, and marquee-layered over each other and were crusted with small, dazzling diamonds cut in the same style. She completed her classy outfit with a generous handful of sparkling bangles. The red and black designer dress she wore may have been a simple choice, but the camera sure did love the swing and sparkle of those diamond earrings.
Michelle has claimed that the family buys everything they wear, rather than taking gifts. If Barack is lucky enough to be reelected, Michelle will have an excuse to wear these gorgeous diamond-crusted earrings again. Or, she’ll have to hostess a few dozen state dinners! The press probably won’t snap any candid shots of her at soccer practice with these babies dangling from her lobes, though.
It’s just possible the rumour mill could be right, and those spectacular diamond earrings Michelle Obama wore on election night were a super-secret fifteenth anniversary gift from Barack Obama. If this is true, then he has great taste in jewellery, and successfully found his elegant wife a gift that fits her style perfectly.
If Michelle’s election night earrings were an anniversary gift from her husband, it’s not the first time he’s surprised his wife with diamonds. The evening he proposed to her, he started a philosophical argument with her in the middle of dinner, asking if marriage was really the institution it used to be. Dessert then came with a nice jewellery box alongside, containing an engagement ring. Michelle Obama didn’t see that coming!
Almost all of Michelle Obama’s diamonds and other jewellery are available online for reasonable prices. The normal woman could find herself copying the First Lady’s style without spending a ton of money, or looking frumpish in the process. Classy and understated is the term that comes to mind.
