soccer stop
What should be done to stop soccer players from diving or whining at the referee?

For me, the most troubling aspects of the game are bad sportsmanship by players diving after minimal contact, and whining at the referee. What should FIFA do to diminish these blights on the game?

Surely the answer to this lies in the refereeing. Players will try anything to win and if they are allowed to get away with these displays of bad sportsmanship they will continue.

Mega-events like the Olympics, the World Cup of soccer, the World Series of baseball, cycling’s Tour de France, and the Super Bowl draw our attention to the deep cultural significance of sport and its role in fostering social bonds. Yet when it comes to sport, there is no shortage of debate: stereotypes regarding sexuality, race, gender, and children have been hotly contested by critics for over 40 years. Even today, sport is one of the very few socially accepted sites of violence, intense competition and controlled forms of social disorder. Battleground: Sports presents the 100 most contentious public and private controversies of the sports world. Highlighted throughout are debates surrounding ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and social identity, sports fan behavior, as well as the role of governments and corporations.Engaging and accessible to a wide variety of readers, this fascinating reference illustrates how sports controversies reflect the historically enduring and changing nature of our broader cultures, and the social battles we engage on a day-to-day basis surrounding the struggles for equality, debates about social violence, the ethics of competition, the politics of civic life, the creation of global communities, and the State’s role in protecting citizens. Entries contain an array of thoughtful perspectives on historic and current controversies, and allow readers to formulate their own conclusions. Enhanced with a timeline, a thorough guide of print and electronic resources for high school and undergraduate student research, this one-stop reference goes beyond the newspaper headlines to provide readers with a guide map forunderstanding what sport controversies teach us about our culture and ourselves.

Excerpt: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Coliseum is now primarily the home of the USC Trojan football team. During the recent stretch of its success in football, most of USC’s regular home games, especially the alternating games with rivals UCLA and Notre Dame, attract a capacity 92,000 person crowd, although they regularly drew far less during the 1990s. The current official capacity of the Coliseum is 93,607. The Coliseum Commission also rents the Coliseum to various events, including international soccer games, musical concerts and other large outdoor events. Celebrating their 50th anniversary in Los Angeles, the Dodgers and Boston Red Sox played an exhibition game here on March 29, 2008; a Los Angeles and MLB record for attendance was broken, where 115,300 people attended the game. On June 17, 2009, the Coliseum played host to the 2009 NBA World Champion Los Angeles Lakers as the end point of the championship parade. Player and coach speeches were given at the Coliseum following a procession that began at the Staples Center. The Olympic Cauldron (also known as the Olympic Torch) was built for the stadium’s two Olympic games. It is still lit during the fourth quarter of USC football games, and other special occasions (e.g., when the Olympics are being held in another city). At the Los Angeles Dodgers Fiftieth Anniversary Game on March 29, 2008, the torch was lit for the ThinkCure! charity ceremony, while Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” was played and the majority of the attendees turned on their complimentary souvenir keychain flashlights. In 2004, the cauldron was lit non-stop for seven days in tribute to President Ronald Reagan, who had died; and it was lit again in April 2005 following the death of Pope John… More:

The Seven-Day Weekend: Changing the Way Work Works

The Seven-Day Weekend: Changing the Way Work Works

$17.99

Ricardo Semler thinks that companies ought to put employee freedom and satisfaction ahead of corporate goals. Imagine a company where employees set their own hours; where there are no offices, no job titles, no business plans; where employees get to endorse or veto any new venture; where kids are encouraged to run the halls; and where the CEO lets other people make nearly all the decisions. This company—Semco—actually exists, and despite a seeming recipe for chaos, its revenues have grown from $35 million to $160 million in the last six years. It has virtually no staff turnover, and there are no signs that its growth will stop any time soon. How did Semco become wildly successful despite breaking many of the commonly accepted laws of business? In The Seven-Day Weekend, Ricardo Semler shows that for those willing to take a chance, there is a better way to run a workplace. He explains how the technology that was supposed to make life easier—laptops, cell phones, e-mail, pagers—has in fact stolen free time and destroyed the traditional nine-to-five workday. But this can be a good thing—if you have the freedom to get your job done on your own terms and to blend your work life and personal life with enthusiasm and creative energy. Smart bosses will eventually realize that you might be most productive if you work on Sunday afternoon, play golf on Monday morning, go to a movie on Tuesday afternoon, and watch your child play soccer on Thursday. This is a radical book that will challenge the business world to make the seven-day weekend a reality.

Brian Hobble isn’t much of a writer—he’s more of a soccer player. (And sometimes he’s not much of a soccer player either!) But one day he borrows a pink Easyflow pen from Nathan Lumsdyke during his favorite author’s school visit, and suddenly he can’t stop writing. Unfortunately for Brian, the pen only writes flowery, embarrassing love stories, even in his science test. Brian can’t wait to give the weird pen back . . . until he realizes Cassandra Wyman is a lot more interested in writing than she is in soccer!

Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It: No Schedules, No Meetings, No Joke–The Big Idea That’s Already Transforming the Way We Work

$12.99

Do you hate cramming all of your errands into the weekend? Do you resent having to beg permission to watch your kid’s weekday soccer game? Are you tired of seeing people who aren’t very good at their jobs get promoted because they arrive early and stay late? There’s got to be a better way—and there is! Cali Ressler and Jody Thompson show that everyone benefits when we change the focus from hours to outcomes. It’s just that our traditional definition of work—Monday through Friday, nine to five—doesn’t make sense in the always-on global economy. So, Ressler and Thompson created the Results-Only Work Environment. In a ROWE, you control when, where, and how long you work. As long as you meet your objectives, the way you spend your time is entirely up to you. Suddenly, work isn’t a place you go, it’s a thing you do. In a ROWE, there are no mandatory meetings or fixed schedules. You stop doing any activity that wastes time, and no one criticizes you for “leaving early” or “coming in late.” If you do your best work at midnight or on Sundays, go for it! ROWE sounds like a fantasy, but Ressler and Thompson have already made it a reality at Best Buy, a Fortune 100 company. They have proven that ROWE not only makes employees happier but also delivers better results. And now the authors are helping companies implement ROWE nationwide. Infused with passion and common sense, Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It will change the way you think about your job, your company, and your quality of life. Read it and join the revolution!
