A New Age Of Soccer Mom

What is a new age soccer mom? Here the answer is as simple as the question. There is not much difference with the so-called ‘old-age’ soccer mom and the new age one. However, the recent generations have the advantage of better technology and more choices. This in some cases eases the burden, but also tends to add to the chaos.

With the new age of technology, soccer moms who feel that they are losing their grasp on intellectual stimulation can acquire gadgets to offset their perceived deficiency. For example, the latest kindle from amazon or other electronic book readers can allow the mom ready access to daily periodicals and books.

Another aspect that technology has improved the life of a soccer mom is the photo album. With digital cameras and camcorders, compiling a scrapbook album is a breeze. In fact, many don’t even bother with the physical album but maintain the pictures in digital format. There are also digital picture frames specifically made for displaying images.

The soccer mom spends at least half her time in the home. Here the design and maintenance aspects are of vital importance. The recent surge in home improvements has had the added benefit of producing a great variety of choices at affordable prices. Hardware stores now target the soccer mom’s for do it yourself projects such as adding home decor accents. There are a myriad of options available for walls, paints, flooring, and windows.

The other essential factor in the life of a soccer mom is transportation. Here also the choices are many. There are mini vans, vans, SUVs, hybrids, and every other type in between. The stereotypical mini van has also undergone many changes. The doors now slide open electronically in some. Many also come with GPS and other devices to ensure security. The soccer mom can now come well equipped to any event.

Once all the cleaning, feeding, and intellectual stimulation has occurred, there comes a time for reflection and relaxation. For this purpose, the mom must ensure that the children are appropriately engaged in some activity. This can range from play dates to video games. The video gaming market has undergone significant changes, as well. The days of kids hanging out at the playground have long passed.

Given all the products and services produced for the soccer mom, they have become a heavily marketed consumer group. Soccer moms also talk to other soccer moms about certain products and activities. This word of mouth recommendation can make or break almost any production line. Regardless of the product, however, the once insular homemaker has been converted into a technologically savvy marketer’s dream.

 A Game For All Seasons

A Game For All Seasons

$17.99

The night air was crisp, even at the 72 degrees that enveloped the 2000 fans that sat and watched as the Westland Dragons took on the Dallas Sting for the U-21 Women’s National Soccer Championship at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Field. Both teams had battled to a 1-1 tie over 90 minutes, and now both were coming to the end of the second 15-minute overtime tied at one goal apiece. A shoot-out was inevitable, and how ironic I thought. This is how it all began for this team; this is what set this team apart from others when they were only 12 years old back in the fall of 1994. The whistle of the center official sounded and I knew what lie in store for our girls. They had been here before; they had all been through so much. Ashleigh, Jessie and Kendall were all on the bench due to injuries, and our back-up keeper, Christa, was asking me why she had to do this. I knew this time was different, this time it was for so much more than a trophy or a title. This time it was for all the games, all the seasons and all the players that had come and gone. This was going to be a game of a lifetime – this was their game for all seasons. The Lady Dragons were born on July 7th, 1994, and I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a warm night, and the heat of the day had parched the already dry field to a golden brown, with spots of green, as 45 young 12 year old girls showed up in mass to a tryout for the “New Premier team” about to be formed. Forty-five young girls all with the same dream: to someday play Women’s Major League Soccer. But now, it was a much smaller dream that lie ahead, they were all very sure that they would be the one, the one out of 45 that would catch the Coach’s eye and be chosen to be part of the 18 player roster.

Herzog and de Meuron 1997-2001: The Complete Works, Volume 4

Herzog and de Meuron 1997-2001: The Complete Works, Volume 4

$94.95

The Tate Modern in London made Herzog & Meuron famous all over the world. The projects and structures they have built since then are distinguished by the sensitive treatment of materials for which the architects are renowned. In addition, these Pritzker Prize-winning architects have developed a topographical conception of architecture that not only locates their designs in a larger context but also frequently structures them as landscapes. In order to represent them, the layout of volume 4 of the complete works has been completely redesigned. The publication contains essays by the architects themselves in which they situate their projects. The structures presented include such icons of contemporary architecture as the Prada store in Tokyo Aoyama and the Allianz Arena in Munich, where the opening game of the 2006 Soccer World Cup was played. Pathbreaking museum structures such as the Schaulager near Basel, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the De Young Museum in San Francisco continue the conversation surrounding what constitutes a truly contemporary presentation of modern art.

 Italian Summer

Italian Summer

$3.99

This is supposed to be the best summer of Nicoletta Pagani’s life-that is, until la famiglia partly forces, partly beckons her, to Italy. The single-most important presence in her Toronto home, la famiglia presides over Sunday mornings, the long distance calls that rejuvenate her father’s soul, and the austere sepia portraits that follow her every move with a judging stare. Now, her father insists that she make the trip to find out “where she came from.”Amid hostile confrontations and unspoken words, Nicoletta finds herself a stranger in the seemingly insignificant town of Portali, hidden in the pristine mountains of central Italy. She discovers the idiosyncrasies of Portali’s residents: the twin bachelors who own the bakery (and are also murder suspects), the soccer-crazy priest of the only church, and the harpy who runs the only grocery store. But Nicoletta is even more surprised to learn that haunted homes, werewolves, and witches are as common as afternoon strolls. The young visitor from Canada sees her future revealed in tarot cards, falls victim to the malocchio-a curse laid upon an unaware and helpless target-and explores the eternal city of Rome. With her new Italian friends, Nicoletta is swept into the town’s social pains and pleasures during one magical summer in Italy.

 Resting Place

Resting Place

$16

A PERSONAL RETREAT. We’ve never needed it more. We run from one place to the next – from meetings and appointments to our kids’ soccer practice, from work to class to choir rehearsal, from the grocery store to small group – and then drop into bed later than we hoped, exhausted and dreading the morning. We want to slow down but don’t know how and don’t really believe that we can. And often, the idea of a personal retreat – time for solitude and silence – makes us feel as anxious as all our frenzied rushing. What in the world would we do with an hour, an afternoon or (gulp!) a whole day of solitude with God? But what is the cost of our frantic pace? What are we missing by not slowing down for reflection and meditation on Scripture? What kind of toll does our anxious running take on those around us – and, even more deeply, on our own soul? In Resting Place, retreat speaker Jane Rubietta addresses soul matters with retreat topics such as: dealing with our fear of abandonment; wrestling with discontent; overcoming our attempts to control others; fulfilling our deep desire to be loved Spiritual retreats help us enter Psalm 23 rest, a place of true rest and trust in our loving, gentle Shepherd. With Scripture to meditate on, quotes to contemplate, questions, prayer and journaling ideas, and creative exercises, Resting Place leads us to and through times of rest. The silence and solitude will follow us into our everyday world as we allow Jesus to guide, comfort and restore us. Come to the Shepherd and find the true rest your soul longs for.
