Getting Rid of Excuses to Not to Exercise!
Everybody’s heard the old joke, excuses are like armpits, everyone has them and they all stink. I was thinking of that this morning as I awakened to a thunderstorm in Southern California, where it’s never supposed to rain. It was coming down really hard. There was thunder and lightning, but still, it was only rain. I thought of people in the midwest and back east, both areas where I used to live, and the weather they have. This is just one of the excuses that people make for not working out. The rain was no problem for me. I rolled out of bed, pulled on my workout clothes, went to a 6 foot by 6 foot space in my garage, started a circuit routine and 20 minutes later I was soaking wet, in my kitchen, packing my kids lunches to get them off to school. I have removed the excuses not to workout from my life and to have a successful workout routine, that’s what you must do as well. I condition high school athletes and teenagers are the masters of excuses but they are just younger versions of ourselves. Lets look at their top three excuses and how I eliminated them. I bet they are the same as yours so this should help you as well.
Excuse number one is “I didn’t have time to work out.” I have eliminated this excuse for myself and my athletes by using circuit training. My workouts are between 10-20 minutes long. They are highly effective. they provide resistance and cardio at the same time eliminating the need to do steady-state boring cardio, followed by lifting. If you do not do circuit training now, I recommend you log on to mycommandfitness.com and test drive a free sample workout.
Excuse number two is “I can’t get to the gym.” I have eliminated that excuse through circuit training as well. My circuit training is for the most part a bodyweight regiment. Every so often I’ll throw in some resistance reps with my home made suspension trainer, I have no need for fancy equipment and the equipment that I use, when I do use it, I made for $20. If you want to learn how to make your own suspension trainer, I can show you at commandfitness.blogspot.com. If you buy one, they go for about $180. You could also pick up a pull up bar for $20 or resistance bands for about $15.
Finally, the last excuse I used hear is, “Commander Grimes, I didn’t know what to do.” Adults make that excuse as well. That excuse is eliminated by using a clear written program that tells you what exercises to do, how many repetitions to do and for how long to do them. Now I know a lot of you are visual learners and like the DVDs that the infomercials provide. I can think of two infomercials off the top of my head. If you need to pay $120 for a DVD that the company copies at 20 cents a piece, have at it. But I’m here to tell you that you can save your money because every exercise under the sun has multiple demo videos on Youtube.
To summarize, you must eliminate excuses to carry out a successful exercise program. Use circuit training to shorten your work out time. This same circuit program should allow you to workout at home with minimal inexpensive equipment, if any. Lastly, get a concise written program that specifies what, how many and how long each exercise should be.
