Soccer Training Program For Kids

Is it o.k. to take small steps if you are a beginner to jogging?
My daughter is only ten and a little over weight. She has started playing soccer this year and gets winded easily. She and I have started a 12-week running program; building up to 30 min. jogs using intermittent brisk walks and running. But when she runs she takes these quick little steps (kind of like when kids act like a train), when I tell her to increase her stride she gets winded quicker.
Is this normal for a beginner? Will her stride increase as time goes on? And if not, what can I do to help her.
Thank you
It’s great that you’re doing this by the way!!! Dont give up, running is so good for you!
The best thing you can do is break things down even further. By that I mean, you have already broken the excercise into walking parts with some jogging (which is the right thing to do by the way). Now, when she does the “train walking”, for brief amounts of time, push her and have her try to take actual strides. Remember she is only a kid, but also remember that she will not get better unless she pushes herself. By “push”, I mean: have her take longer strides until she says she cant anymore, then have her do just thirty more seconds. You’d be amazed how much that can do. You can even count it down for her for encouragement. This way she is going just beyond her limit and in time she’ll get in better and better shape.
Good luck and HAVE FUN!!
PS – be sure to eat right… this is CRUCIAL. Whole grains, vegetable fats, lots of protein, and LOTS of produce!!! And water!!!
