Ally McCoist: Portrait of a Hero $15.95 A schoolboy prodigy, it was always clear that McCoist was destined for top flight soccer. At just 16 he signed his first professional contract with St. Johnstone, shooting to prominence in the 1980/81 season, scoring 22 league goals and playing a starrring role for the Scottish youth team. He was soon hot property. After two years of mixed fortunes at Sunderland, McCoist returned to Scotland and signed for his boyhood heroes Glasgow Rangers. Over the next 15 years, he established himself as arguably the greatest goal-scorer ever to play for the club. He not only gave heart and soul for Rangers but was also capped 61 times for Scotland. This authoritative and affectionate portrait of this much-loved sportsman charts the highs and lows of a fascinating career, culminating in McCoist reaching legendary status. It also looks at the events that helped to shape his life—overcoming homesickness when first playing for an English club, the effects his parents’ separation had on him, and how he coped when his young son had to undergo several life-saving operations. Having hung up his books, Ally’s vibrant personality made him a natural for the television screen. Now, however, he has come full circle and returned “home” to be assistant manager at his beloved Rangers. This wonderful book is a must-read for any soccer fan or indeed for anyone captivated by this larger-than-life character. |

COACHING 6, 7 & 8 YEAR OLDS $9.99 WHY WE HAVE CHANGED?The first edition of Coaching 6, 7 & 8 Year Olds was written in collaboration with Bobby Howe, at that time the Director of Coaching for the Washington State Youth Soccer Association, later Director of Coaching for the United States Soccer Federation. That was a long time ago (1988) . . . One year later we published Coaching 9, 10 & 11 Year Olds.Until recently, we hadn’t changed a word in either of them. Why? Like the Energizer Bunny they just kept on going, and going and going . . . !Over 100,000 copies of each of the originals have been sold. As I’m sure you would understand, we were reluctant to change. Consequently, nothing did except the photographs of the two authors. The book didn’t age, but the authors did!Since 1989, we have learned so much. So now it is time to change in order to update and improve the books, but at the same time, we will retain much of the core content that has worked so well. The 21st Century has given as another great technological opportunity – digital printing. We are now able to customize, modify and change the content of the manuals and the covers at will. We can update with every printing. And we can print just one book or 1000. So if, for instance, the Lake Washington Youth Soccer Association wants their version of Coaching 6, 7 & 8 Year Olds, we can do it. If the Franklin Pierce Club only needs 10 customized copies of 9, 10 & 11 Manual for the coaches of their small club, we can do that too!And if we come up with the newest game that children think is a blast, we can insert that in the very next print.Tony Waiters |

Umbro also manufactured a popular style of shorts that reached its peak in the late 1980s and early 1990s. They were made of nylon, had a drawstring waistband, and often came in bright colors. With the growth of youth football (soccer) leagues in the United States in the 1980s, many youths, teens, and young adults began wearing them as everyday clothing. Like football itself, they were equally popular among both genders. At the height of the fashion, other brands of football shorts, such as Adidas, Diadora, Hummel, Lotto and Mitre, also became popular. But none can match the global status acquired by modest, ubiquitous ping pong—the most popular yet misunderstood pastime in the world today, a sleeping giant of fast-paced fun. Join us on a journey into the dark corners and distant alleys of this ponging globe, from suburban basements of misspent youths to Bangkok backrooms to New Jersey rec rooms to Beijing stadia to dwarf child champions to elderly enthusiasts to Hollywood hipsters to perky porn stars. This cast of thousands, combined with artifacts from the authors’ ever-growing collection of ping pongalia, reveals the hidden truths of the world behind the game: the secrets of eternal youth, guerrilla warfare, foolproof seduction, fame and adulation—all explained through two paddles, sixty inches of net, and a bouncing, bouncing ball. A world where everything you know is pong. |

From Clients to Citizens: Communities Changing the Course of their Own Development $39.95 Communities worldwide act on their own initiative, drawing on their own resources of leadership and solidarity, and in spite of poverty, to achieve their own goals. Development practitioners have too often viewed poor communities as helpless and disadvantaged, and have encouraged their dependency. Yet if instead communities are recognized as having social and cultural as well as material assets, and these are what help them to overcome obstacles, then their capacity to negotiate external assistance on their own terms can be strengthened. From the Moroccan villages that secured irrigation infrastructure with the help of returning migrants, to the Egyptian youth leaders who wanted a soccer pitch for their village, and the indigenous women’s cooperative in Ecuador that now exports medicinal plants, this book describes case studies of communities that first built on their own assets, before seeking assistance from outside. What are the common factors that help all these communities mobilize? Do outside organizations have a role to play when communities take charge of their own development? From Clients to Citizens is aimed at community workers, researchers and policy makers who want to take a fresh look at community development |

From Soccer Moms to NASCAR Dads: Sport, Culture, and Politics Since 9/11 $104 Sport is part of a rapidly changing world in which new pressures from politics, society, the media, and new technologies play a significant role. This book shows how sport and its culture are being transformed by wider forces of change. The post-9/11 era has brought the occupation of Iraq and American imperial foreign policy, overt attempts toward dismantling public education and affirmative action, marketing of patriotic narratives, and the framing of national identity around conservative cultural politics. Detailed case studies focus on such events as the hypercommercialism of NASCAR auto racing, Nike advertising, the 2002 and 2004 Olympic Games, the politics of race surrounding the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and emerging narratives in youth sport. The book will be a must-read for those interested in the complex ways sport is sutured into the national consciousness. |

Golden and Blue Like My Heart: Masculinity, Youth, and Power among Soccer Fans in Mexico City $45 For fans of pro soccer in Mexico City, the four most popular teams represent distinct identities that embody such attributes as political power, nationalism, and working-class values. One of these teams, the Pumas, is associated with youthfulness, and its equally youthful fans take pride in the fact that their heroes have not yet been corrupted by corporate or political interests. This ethnographic study examines Puma fans’ understanding of the ideal that the team represents, considers the practices they employ to express and sometimes contradict this ideal, and reveals how soccer fandom in contemporary Mexico has emerged as a nexus of tensions among competing visions of state and society.Roger Magazine takes readers inside Mexico’s soccer stadiums to explore young men’s participation in struggles over the future of that country’s urban society. His firsthand observations of the fan clubs—las porras—yield a unique inside look at confrontations in the stands over group organization, particularly at the emergence of rebel segments within the clubs. His study offers a close-up look at ground-level struggles over social organization in contemporary urban Mexico, showing how young male fans both blindly reproduce and consciously manipulate images of violence and disorder derived from national myths about typical urban Mexican men.Golden and Blue Like My Heart offers a new way of understanding the dynamics of fandom while shedding new light on larger social processes and youth culture in Mexico. And with its insight into soccer culture, politico-economic transition, and masculinity, it has important and wide-reaching implications for all of Latin America. |

During his youth, the local Campos dos Goytacazes social elite alluded to him as the “mestiço of Morro do Coco” (the half-breed from Morro do Coco district) . In 1921, when he ran for the Presidency of Republic, letters falsely attributed to the other candidate Artur Bernardes were published by the press and caused a political crisis because they insulted both the former president Marshal Hermes da Fonseca and also Peçanha, another former president, claiming he was a mulatto. Gilberto Freyre mentioned his “mulatismo” in Brazilian politics as the same that prevailed in Brazilian soccer . According to some scholars, his presidential photographs were touched up to whiten his dark skin . Granada Hills, California (Images of America Series) $14.15 The modern history of Granada Hills began in 1913 with the completion of the Los Angeles aqueduct and the arrival of abundant freshwater to the former land of Mission San Fernando. Citrus orchardsflourished on the Sunshine Ranch, acreage originally cultivated by former senator George K. Porter. In 1926, the community of Granada was formed as a rabbit-raising colony, promising residents country living and economic prosperity. Granada added “Hills” to its name in 1942 to avoid confusion with a similarly named Northern California town, andthanks to the postwar baby boom, the population grew by 1,000 percent between 1950 and 1960. The community soon earned a reputation as “The San Fernando Valley’s Most Neighborly Town” as residents came together to celebrate the hometown team’s 1963 Little League World Series victory and the formation of the nation’s first all-girl American Youth Soccer Organization league, and as neighbor helped neighborafter the devastating 1971 and 1994 earthquakes. |

Home on the Field: How One Championship Soccer Team Inspires Hope for the Revival of Small Town America $13.99 A Home on the Field is about faith, loyalty, and trust. It is a parable in the tradition of Stand and Deliver and Hoosiers—a story of one team and their accidental coach who became certain heroes to the whole community. For the past ten years, Siler City, North Carolina, has been at the front lines of immigration in the interior portion of the United States. Like a number of small Southern towns, workers come from traditional Latino enclaves across the United States, as well as from Latin American countries, to work in what is considered the home of industrial-scale poultry processing. At enormous risk, these people have come with the hope of a better life and a chance to realize their portion of the American Dream. But it isn’t always easy. Assimilation into the South is fraught with struggles, and in no place is this more poignant than in the schools. When Paul Cuadros packed his bags and moved south to study the impact of the burgeoning Latino community, he encountered a culture clash between the long-time residents and the newcomers that eventually boiled over into an anti-immigrant rally featuring former Klansman David Duke. It became Paul’s goal to show the growing numbers of Latino youth that their lives could be more than the cutting line at the poultry plants, that finishing high school and heading to college could be a reality. He needed to find something that the boys could commit to passionately, knowing that devotion to something bigger than them would be the key to helping the boys find where they fit in the world. The answer was soccer. But Siler City, like so many other small rural communities, was a football town, and long-time residents saw soccer as a foreign sport and yet another accommodation to the newcomers. After an uphill battle, the Jets soccer team at Jordan-Matthews High School was born. Suffering setbacks and heartbreak, the majority Latino team, in only three seasons and against all odds, |

However Tall the Mountain: A Dream, Eight Girls, and a Journey Home $17.99 Growing up in America, Awista Ayub had few real memories of Afghanistan, which her family had fled in 1979, when she was just two years old. Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town $15.79 The extraordinary tale of a refugee youth soccer team and the transformation of a small American townClarkston, Georgia, was a typical Southern town until it was designated a refugee settlement center in the 1990s, becoming the first American home for scores of families in flight from the world’s war zones—from Liberia and Sudan to Iraq and Afghanistan. Suddenly Clarkston’s streets were filled with women wearing the hijab, the smells of cumin and curry, and kids of all colors playing soccer in any open space they could find. The town also became home to Luma Mufleh, an American-educated Jordanian woman who founded a youth soccer team to unify Clarkston’s refugee children and keep them off the streets. These kids named themselves the Fugees.Set against the backdrop of an American town that without its consent had become a vast social experiment, Outcasts United follows a pivotal season in the life of the Fugees and their charismatic coach. Warren St. John documents the lives of a diverse group of young people as they miraculously coalesce into a band of brothers, while also drawing a fascinating portrait of a fading American town struggling to accommodate its new arrivals. At the center of the story is fiery Coach Luma, who relentlessly drives her players to success on the soccer field while holding together their lives—and the lives of their families—in the face of a series of daunting challenges. This fast-paced chronicle of a single season is a complex and inspiring tale of a small town becoming a global community—and an account of the ingenious and complicated ways we create a home in a changing world. |

Excerpt: Terence John “Terry” Cooke (born 5 August 1976 in Marston Green in Solihull) is an English footballer. He began his career with Manchester United, but struggled to break into the first team and had loan spells with Sunderland, Birmingham City and Wrexham before moving to United’s local rivals Manchester City in 1999. He also failed to make an impact at City and again went on loan to Wigan Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday and Grimsby Town. The loan to Grimsby became permanent in 2002, but he only remained there for a year before rejoining Sheffield Wednesday for a season. In 2005, Cooke’s career took him out of England for the first time as he joined Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids. In four years with the team, he made more than 100 appearances, but he was deemed to be surplus to requirements at the end of the 2009 MLS season and released from his contract. As a free agent, he was picked up by Australian side North Queensland Fury. Cooke also made four appearances for the England Under-21 side. Cooke, who was born in Birmingham and grew up as a Birmingham City supporter, came up through the youth system of Manchester United and scored the penalty that clinched the FA Youth Cup in 1995, but only appeared in eight first team matches with the club. Cooke was a part of the Old Trafford youth setup that sprouted players such as David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs in the same period. He made his debut in a Premier League match against Bolton Wanderers in September 1995, and provided the cross for a Ryan Giggs goal, and found himself being tipped for a bright future. He then scored in the second leg of United’s League Cup aggregate defeat to York City at Bootham Crescent in early October. However, he only made six more games … More: |
